I collect action figures, have since I was a kid, at my current age of 24 I'm ok saying I collect them, especially as I'm in a relationship. I also smoke the odd bag of grass and am not shy admitting it unless it's to the Police or my work. My question is to you which is more embarassing for you to admit you do drugs or collect toys lol. Both are turn offs for a lot of women, and turn ons for few, I know a lot more girls into drugs then toys, unless they're battery operates ones. Just a thought that's been floating around in my head, everybody gets asked it once in a while. what do you collect? and you can say nothing and get no response or say action figures and subject yourself to social acceptance or verbal harrassment. It doesn't have to be drugs either, could be a favorite tv show, or food, drink etc, I think everybody's ashamed or afraid to admit something to someone, hell you family, friends and spouse/partner maybe cool with you collecting toys but maybe you don't tell your boss in fear of losing your xmas bonus or not being taken seriously.

I find a lot of people think it's cool that I'm into comics and collectibles. The only harrassment I ever got was from this guy from India who was trying to fit in and he actually got really aggressive and was insulting me to the point where everyone else in the room went quiet and everyone was in total shock. I think it was a culture clash and he was "trying to be cool" possibly from whatever films he's seen of people bullying people fitting in or some crap. I've only had one girl who I dated that openly had a problem with the fact that I'm into comics and toy collecting.

Girl who I am with now is really into anime, but my addiction of action figures has rubbed off on her and she collects the odd MU figure, some Star wars, and video game characters. People at work think I'm some sort of freak saying I collect these, its more of an investment I say lol. I don't really get embarrassed so neither or is embarrassing. For me though, it was grass or toys, I went with toys lol, and grats on the gold star Chris hahaha

Never had a problem with either one. If anyone does make a fuss, I point out the similiarities to whatever they collect or buy.
As for other habits. Whatever you do in your own home is your own business so long as you aren't getting minors involved (though you really shouldn't advertise that and piracy vocally on the internet, it does eventually trace back to you no matter how much care you take). I've gotten more flack from ex-g/fs for being pro-gay marriage than I have anything I've ever been interested in collectibles-wise. Which was really sad. I actually got dumped once cause of that. She was fine with the cartoons, fine with the toys, fine the video games, and all around child-like innocence. The second we start talking about kids and I say "I want a girl and a boy. One to be my princess and the other to play catch with, which is which doesn't matter to me." I get dumped. xD The new girl I'm seeing right now is all kinds of fun though. She doesn't care about any of my habits, actually debates comics with me on occasion, and all around geeks out more than I do on things. It's been a blast so long as I don't say something stupid or sexist that gets random crap thrown at me if I'm not paying attention. Last edited by Snowflakian; 08-30-2011 at 12:52 AM.. |

that is a really gud question. me being 28 i sometimes get crazy looks from ppl when im in the toy isle (mostly target stores for some reason) my girl has been supportive of me thru the whole thing. but it is the kind of stuff i dont tell alot of ppl that i work with, only a hand of them know and have seen my collection vids, customs, and stop motions on youtube and they say they wish they had a hobby like mine.

I don't usually care what people think. I'm more concerned of someone breaking into my home and stealing my stuff than what some jerk thinks of what I choose to collect.

A dealer does, he collects them in bulk and distributes them as single carded (bagged) gems all for the low price of 9.99 lol. I wish Walmart had a liscence to sell weed, how great would that be, I could legally walk in buy weed, pipe, lighter, munchies, video game, dvd, more munchies, and some toys all from the same spot haha. someday!

Which was really sad. I actually got dumped once cause of that. She was fine with the cartoons, fine with the toys, fine the video games, and all around child-like innocence. The second we start talking about kids and I say "I want a girl and a boy. One to be my princess and the other to play catch with, which is which doesn't matter to me." I get dumped. xD Until recently, the only people who knew about my collecting were my family, housemates and girlfriend, then a couple of times recently when out with mates/workmates, the discussion has come round to childhood and the toys we used to have. I've then said I have a 'few' left over from those days, my girlfriend has then chipped in with 'he has so many he has to rotate them!'. They've all been cool with it, often it's proceeded with a list - do you have Optimus Prime? , do you have Galvatron?, etc. The answer is always yes! I think it's perfectly acceptable to be a geek if you don't fit the stereotype, if the first thing people find out about you is that you collect toys then that will dominate their view of you, if they first find out you're married, have kids and exercise regularly, then the fact you collect toys is just an interesting little aside. Having said that my girlfriend met my toy collection before she met me!

Um...I can say I don't collect drugs first off. It'd be best to sell that off to gain profits that could benefit one in procuring more toys.
Anyhow, it is hard for one to say they collect toys. At least for me it is. I don't make too much mention about it except to close friends & family. Otherwise if the time is right I'll make mention of it to said significant other if I ever find one. |

my collecting isnt something i really tell people about. my family, closest mates and girlfriend know. my girlfriend is so cool with it. even buys me stuff. but its not something i would want everyone knowing. im 25 and am always in the gym. been working out 9 years and used to be an avid kickboxer, so i suppose people see me as the gym rat type of guy, rather than a big kid.
i spose it would be a turn off for alot of girls and im lucky ive got a GF who is supportive of my addiction and even encourages it. shes abit of a geek herself, you wouldnt think so because she used to be a professional dancer and looks abit like kelly brook. you can never tell what people really like. before we were together i wasnt interested in toys though, only girls. toys are something i can do as a hobby whilst in a relationship. if im single. its all about the gym and the girls. then when i get a GF. the toys creep back again as my escapism. such is the cycle of my life.

my brothers friend who is a bit of an asshole told him "Why does your brother buy all those toys" and my brother is like "dude, leave him alone. he does it cause he likes it and its pretty cool"
his other friends I've impressed. lol my only problem with collecting is to know when to stop. I have in this past month purchased most of the thundercats stuff, a kotobukiya statue, 3 sentinels, playsets I need for my diorama, and some my little pony friendship is magic. With all the new games coming soon that I want, My Adult self kicked in and Shouted at the Kid in me while I was driving home from work one day Adult Nex : "Ok, STOP. You are no longer allowed to spend more then 10 dollars on toys a week outside of marvel. You have your Sentinels, and your done with Marvel untill the next comic and main wave." Kid Nex : "Awww...But I Want Applejack and Rarity and I saw a Ninja Turtles playset on Ebay for 40 plus free shipping!" Adult Nex : "Do you want Starfox 3DS and God of War Origins? Isnt Thor and X-Men First Class hitting Bluray soon?" Kid Nex : "Yes! I Want Them!" Adult Nex : "Then STOP" Kid Nex : "Awwww..." Adult Nex : "Dont You Make That Face Or You'll Get Grounded! I'll make you sit through reality Tv!" Kid Nex : "But Thats So Boring and Lame!" Adult Nex : "dont be a child. If you behave I'll get you a happy meal" Kid Nex : "Happy Meals suck now that they got rid of the fries" Adult Nex : "That they do....ok, We'll go to Dairy Queen, but ONLY If you promise to not buy any more toys other than your marvel" Kid Nex : "I promise" Adult Nex : "Good Boy" *Drives away while the radio plays Tra La La by the Banana Splits as he does every friday after work before the weekend*

Sometimes it just comes up that I collect action figures. I always feel a little hesitant to say it, but most people end up saying something like "Oh wow, that's actually pretty cool." and start going off into a story about their favorite toys from when they were kids. My girlfriend is absolutely fine with it. She loves "nerd culture," as she puts it. She came with me to SDCC this year, she watched the entire Avengers:EMH season 1 in one day, she has a comic collection of her own. Hell she has a few action figures and figurines of her own. I don't think my parents get it (I'm 20 and I live at home year round), but they don't mind it.
As for drugs, I'll smoke weed every once in awhile, but not all the time. However it'd be much easier to tell people I'm a hardcore drug addict, than an action figure collector where I'm from. Someone overdosed the other day because he drank, smoked weed, took Xanax, and snorted coke.. |

Well most of my friends are always amazed every time they walk into my room and see something new. And as for my GF she helps me collect my MU stuff. 30% of my collection is thanks to her. I am not ashamed of admitting I collect MU/Transformers/Star Wars stuff. I have inspired a few of my friends to start collecting something of their own. I have never done drugs at any point in my life. But if I had to I would defiantly say Drugs is the more embarrassing of the two.

Being in college right now, id definitely say its more accepted to be a drug addict than a toy addict. Weed is now and forevor has been considered "cool" and the "norm". I dont know how else to explain it. Its bad enough that im five years older than my upcoming classmates, but thats a whole other tangent.
