I have read the forums in Hisstank in reference to painting Joes. I have customized a number of them with little trouble in the paint dept. I am attempting my first custom MU fig and it is proving difficult. The paint I am using is Testors acrylic. I have tried acetone, nail polish remover, windex and dish detergent to clean the parts. The paint just runs off as if I coated the figure in a repellant. I need some assistance. Thanks.

Get some black Krylon paint for plastic- stuff sticks to anything. Once that dries, lightly primer over it (automotive primer works fine, but Tamiya primer rocks best).
Paint on from there. Barring that, try Easy Off oven cleaner- anything like a mold release agent on your figure will be washed away with that- stdrips paint great too! |

I have tried a number of items to clean the figure with but not oven cleaner. I have tried a couple different paints as well and nothing sticks. It either runs of or peels off. I have had no issues painting gi joes. But my first mu is not working out.

Hu. Which figure in particular are you useing as your base? I have done a few with very minimal cleanup. Telling you- get that Krylon for plastic at Home Depot (any hard ware store really) and use that as your baecoat.
Also, yuo could take very fine grain sandpaper to the figure (LIGHTLY!) so the paint has something to adhere to. And skip Testors' acryllic! it's usually very thin- it's made for airbrushing onto styrene models. |

I started with Archangel. I had issues with the upper and lower torso. I now am using the torso from Havok, with arms and legs from either Havok or Archangel.

I am attempting an Angel custom. Another problem is that I am getting brush strokes on the pieces a well. Part of the problem is that the other paint was too thick since the Testors was too watery. I haven't found a happy medium.

Acryllics can be thinned with water to whatever consistancy you desire- I use them for wasjes even.

you can try model masters acryl. thats what i use when i do repaints. sticks pretty good. i normally just dip the brush in the bottle then to the figure. the whole "consistancy of milk" thing never worked for me

I use Citadel Paints from Gamesworkshop. I only have issues with the white. Remember to always base coat it too.

Hey man, i'm trying the exact same thing myself.
I've sacrificed a Jim Lee Wolverine to test some Vallejo paints on. That milky consistency guideline doesn't always work. I would experiment with some different mixes of paint and water. It's a fine art getting a mix that covers well but doesn't obscure the sculpt detail. If the paint looks like it's on too thick then clean a brush, load it with a little water and then re-brush over to spread the paint out. The thing i'm learning is that multiple coats are absolutely vital. The first coat is not going to cover perfectly at a watery consistency. Once it's dried the second coat sticks much better and then the third and fourth coat apply perfectly. I've even managed to repaint over the yellow of the costume with a silver wash with multiple coats. However, I did have to fight and experiment to get the right consistency. My top bit of advice, if it looks like it's going wrong then wash the paint off! But don't panic. Be patient and persist and eventually you'll crack it. It's not an easy thign to do and my respect for top flight customisers has gone up a lot since trying to do the most basic repaint. It takes a lot of thought and consideration and experimentation to get it perfect. |

I think a varnish type coating on any custom is the best way to go.
If you're in the US then go find Dullcote. That stuff is the business! If you're in the UK i've found a hobby/paints online retailer that sells it as well. |
