I wouldn't say the don't retain value, a lot do and a lot don't. All the sports figures have rare one's/ case and variant colors ex I had a Patrick Roy figure when he played with Colorado, but he has a green Gatorade bottle instead of blue and I ended up getting $75 for it locally. Spawn has 12'' figures, collector's edition ones, the movie masters line has some expensive figures such as robocop, predator, alien, donnie darko etc. Not to mention his music figures Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Metallica etc are near $100 range on ebay, also the Anime/video game characters he did such as Metal Gear Solid and Akira also grab big bucks, and his Where the Wild Things Are figure are crazy pricey. He has stuff that's worth it leaving MOC, but can you deal with it... frankly the Mcfarlane effect is, amazing likeness to the athelete, actor, chracter, from the face sculpt, to body sculpt and paint, but the acticulation is usually shit, maybe 10 points of articulation usully less.. they're made to be mini cheap statues and to be posed in 1-2 particular poses ie spawn with the classic covers, the figures are built to be an exact representation of 1 particular comic cover, so the pose is dictated by the cover. I wish Mcfarlane would team up with Hasbro and do the MU headscupts and weapons and display bases/vehicles.
As far as McFarlane teaming up with Hasbro, not sure if you know this, but McFarlane toys officially let go of all their sculpting department last year and now only use scanning technology to capture the likeness of their figures. Sucks big time. I always prefer the artist's interpretation since they can exaggerate certain features that translate better to toy form. Sometimes, if the sculpt is so perfect it doesn't look right as a toy. It sounds kind of weird, I know, but sometimes a little interpretation goes a long way. |

the sculpt is brilliant, he has articulation at the ankles, knees, hips, wrist, elbows and head. thats not exactly a statue. i see you cant really do many poses like you can with marvel legends, but for the time im sure mcfarlane figures like that were amongst the most articulated??? its a classic action figure with articulation where it needs it for a kid to play with it. nout wrong with that! there are some other spawn figures that dont have much articulation though, but the sculpt is great so maybe its those you are thinking of. they arent all like that though.

i dont see anything wrong with the articulation on this spawn and alot of his other ultra action figures. they were amongst the best if not the best of the 90s to my knowledge.

And McFarlane has never been in the top tier when it came to articulation, even in the 90's. What they did do was revolutionize the accuracy of toy likenesses and pushed the industry to higher quality sculpting. McFarlane Toys is part of the reason why Star Wars (or other movie toys) look as close to the actors/masks as they do now. Like Optimus Vader said, the joints on a McFarlane toy are there, but practically useless except for a single pose or two. And they're fine for what they are, especially if you like the IP that the toy is based on. I just wish McFarlane would stop trying to be so perfect with the sculpt sometimes and understand that you can have a great sculpt AND good articulation in the same figure. Just look at Hasbro's 6" Iron Man Mark IV.

I think a lot of us respect Mcfarlane Toys a hell of a lot, they raised the bar for other companies to achieve in the field of accurate likeness of the figure's portrayal, be it movie, video game, music, sports, fantasy etc. The Geiger piece he did is 1 of my favorite "toys" ever made, I don't own it but fucking love it. but it is just a statue, he makes amazingly detailed replicas of sometime relife things, but a wax museum is only so good, you need to bring life into the mold, give it some better articulation. I have owned quite a few spawn figures in my day and sold them all, they were badass toys, but not much poseability some had decent amount but majority had a static 1-2 pose option. I do see a lot of people buying his figures though purely for headsculpt to either army build with or make customs with... he even had a 3 3/4'' line with reg, silver and gold variants, seen them but never bought any.
If it wasn't for Spawn figures, you wouldn't see companies like Sideshow , Hot Toys,Neca, Revoltech putting as high a quality detail into their figures, it's because of Todd McFarlane's passion for detail that made everybody take notice. Last edited by behindthemask; 08-03-2011 at 01:25 PM.. |

Hadn't been out for a bit, so I went out today and it was a good day. The Cable with Hope is up for trade, looking for a Cable without Hope. The extra Joe's are for a friend of mine.
