Not sure if you have looked around at the answers that Mattel has given several toy websites but basically they took a magic 8 ball used clichéd answers from it.
Now here is what I don't get and fairly sure Mattel doesn't get... They are really in the midst of a public relations nightmare. They have multitudes of fans irate over a variety of issues not just one and they pick this time to be.... cute? Funny (or a disastrous attempt thereof)? Depraved indifference to their consumer? Arrogant? How sad it is when I take my hobby more seriously than the people whose livelihood depends on my desire and satisfaction of them and their product. Hey Mattel, Just a tip here…. You should find ways to make us happy, entice us, and forgive you, not new and inane ways to irritate us? Do you guys have some sort of stock deal going that if you destroy the stock value via alienating customers you make money? Or is this like Power Girls breasts … you’ll keep making the problem bigger and bigger till someone stops you? Or maybe the similarity is that you’re both just boobs. |

Personally, Mattel has been in the toy business for how long? Will the current lack of customer service, professionalism and fan dissent cause a change in how they do business?. I don't think so, no matter how loud we get I believe its going to take Mattel a few more years before they (or if) change their tune.

Not to be a Mattel apologist, but it is possible that things have gotten to a point where Matty would only make things worse by attempting damage control. It could be a case of "How did we get this bad? We need to seriously rethink this, but we can't tell the public about it until after all the changes are in place or we'll catch more flak."
Of course, the cynic in me thinks that's a load of bull. The Cynic thinks Matty is enjoying the notoriety, since it keeps their name in the minds of collectors and on discussion boards. On top of that, they have IP's and licensing deals that ensure Mattel is the only way you can get toys from those IP's. So if you want MOTUC toys, you're stuck with Matty. Same goes for the bulk of DC toys or 1:64-scale cars. Sure, the PR storm might hurt their chances at renewing their licensing agreements, but it's doubtful.
