It's hard to vote against Lego, but G.I. Joe shaped a lot of my childhood and my early adulthood after those 25th figures came out...

I vote for Lego..
When I was grounded, my parents never stopped me from watching TV, using the Computer, or even put me in my room for punishment.. My grounding was not letting me play with my Lego.. Worst punishment ever! |

Damn, this is yet another messed up round lol why must we vote between the two! Im going to have to go with what I had the most of...Lego. Come to think of it I still have all of my Legos in a huge tub and all sets are complete, including that big castle with the dragon head the Fire Breathing Fortress i think its called. The only sets I ever had my parents buy was Castle or Pirates and for whatever reason it was always Pirates vs Knights lol

GI Joe wins only because of the character delvelopement. They both promoted creativity and immagination. But the character developement of GI Joe really hit home for me.

Legos were cool and all, but G.I. Joe was the shiznit. Even if they had all these new Lego cartoons and video games when we were little, I'd still go with Joes.
BTW, all G.I. Joe cartoon episodes are now on Netflix streaming. |

Since we're talking 80s, gotta go GI Joe. Those Legos look bad.
If we were talking today, I would have voted Lego. Very disappointed with Hasbro's (and Paramount's) handling of the property, and modern Lego sets are AWESOME! EDIT: Joe had WAAAAAY better artwork than Lego (or just about anyone) back then too. I guess I should say that Lego box art looks bad. The Legos themselves look about the same.

Lego didn't really use artwork on packages in the past, the box basically showed what was in it.
Is this really just about what was made in the 80's? Even still I think Lego was the better toy (it's the only collection I kept from that time), although GI Joe appeals more to the people who are on this forum (and associated ones like HissTank) since most here are action figure collectors. |

I guess what I'm saying is, back when I was a kid, I looked at the Lego box and thought they must be lame toys. So I never had any Legos.
That, and everything else had a cartoon doing the advertising. So other toys were backed by cartoons and good box art. Lego didn't have good advertising, at least that my child-sized eyes saw. Now, my son lives and breathes Lego. Doesn't care at all for Joe (despite that I bought the cartoon series and made him watch them).

I collect Lego now, but I played with GI Joe when I was a kid of the 80s. GI Joe ruled.

Never had Joes as a kid, but tons of Lego. Even had those oversized bricks when I was around 5 years old. I can still remember making spaceships and having them dock with a space station. And as I got older I started collecting Star Wars stuff, and of course Star Wars Lego! Even now I buy a few sets now and then.

As for which was better, Legos certainly had that customization and "fueled by imagination" thing going for it (which it still does), but the sets back then weren't nearly as impressive as the stuff they're putting out today. Remember, in the 80's, Lego didn't really have any licensed properties tied to their sets. There were no Star Wars, LOTR, Marvel/Avengers, or DCU sets. They didn't have Bionicle or any sequels/spin-offs of it, either.

I think I'm leaning this way.
I had a lot of Legos growing up.....and I still have a box full of those originals. I have fond memories of building those City sets. But come on....it's GI Joe!

I loved both A LOT as a kid. I did own a lot more Lego, as it went great with cheap dinosaur toys so I could play Jurassic Park with Lego. But I did have epic battles in the sandbox and backyard with Sgt Savage and His Screaming Eagles [as it was the Gi Joe show I grew up with].
Damn this is a really hard choice, Phawck..
