The latest release in NECA’s Classic Game Series is the Texas Chainsaw Massacre – Atari 2600 Style Leatherface. The figure uses the recently released Ultimate 7″ Scale Leatherface figure as its base, except it is mostly a blindingly green color. The figure comes packaged in a flapped window box that is modeled after the original Atari 2600 game packaging. Overall
When the Ultimate 7″ Scale Leatherface was originally revealed, I jokingly stated that I wanted an Atari version for the classic game series. Due to the nature of Atari 2600 graphics and colors, I never thought they would actually do it. Then, at San Diego Comic-Con 2015, they went ahead and unveiled a very green Atari Leatherface figure. Not only was I shocked, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it.
Leatherface comes packaged in an Atari 2600 themed flapped window box. It includes a game screen shot backdrop in the packaging. The figure includes a Chainsaw accessory. Leatherface features the same articulation as the Ultimate Leatherface. The apron is a leather-like cloth and can be removed if you desire. The paint used is universally green, and the colors between the different plastics and apron all match surprisingly well. The skin mask is a dark skin tone, while there is some black used to match the in-game sprite. But, the figure is overwhelmingly spinach green.
Even among the Classic Game Appearance line, the figure is definitely an odd one. The solid colors and huge amount of green may be hard to swallow for casual fans, or those who didn’t grow up in the Atari 2600 days. I, was fortunate enough to not only grow up in those days, but I also remember the horror games well. With that in mind, I absolutely love the figure as I’ve always been a fan of odd iterations of a character, which is what drew me into the classic game line initially. The figure had zero quality control issues. Leatherface looks great with the NES versions of Freddy and Jason, combining to form a neon gang of horror icons. If you are at all into the classic game line, like odd figure releases and want another version of this mold, then I can definitely recommend this.
