Jason Voorhees is the third horror icon to get the Ultimate figure treatment from NECA. He joins the previously released A Nightmare On Elm Street Freddy Krueger and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre Leatherface figures. Throughout the franchise, Jason Voorhees has been played by different actors and has had, at times, drastically different looks. Having this be based on Friday the 13th Part 6: Jason Lives, NECA chose to go with the most popular version of the character. Toyark sponsor Big Bad Toy Store sent along the figure. In Friday the 13th Part 6 turns Jason into a literal monster by bringing him back from the dead. Jason became an undead, practically unstoppable, killing machine. From here on out, the only way to put an end to him was basically to trap him and hope he doesn’t get free. Of course he does get free…In every subsequent sequel. The film also started the franchise on a path to fans rooting for Jason, as opposed to fearing him.
Jason comes in NECA’s current Ultimate flapped window box packaging. Like the Fredfy and Leatherface figures, the front features a take on one of the iconic movie posters. The figure sits on a plastic tray, held in by a single twist tie. It include a machete, a knife, a fence post, and interchangeable right hand and a “Jason Voorhees” headstone. Once I opened the packaging, I realized how brilliant the headstone inclusion was. The Ultimate figures all include a diorama backdrop display, and I expected this to be the Crystal Lake backdrop used in their promo images. However, the backdrop included is the opened grave that Jason is laying in. It was unexpected and a fairly brilliant inclusion.
The figure itself is incredibly well crafted. The sculpted details are in line with the likes of other Ultimate figures. Things like fabric folds, skin texture and fine details all stand out here. The hockey mask look pretty spot on and the unmasked head sculpt is appropriately gruesome. The figure features a great use of paint applications. There is a nice fine wash over it as well as various splatters throughout. The unmasked head sculpt features a variety of color washes in blacks, browns and greens, which really shine upon close inspection. The weapons and accessories are crafted with the usual high end precision I expect. There are about 25 points of articulation here and the joints were nice and tight throughout. The waist is ball jointed under a soft rubber shirt. Well hidden, but effective.
Ultimate Jason Voorhees stands out as an absolute must buy for horror fans. It’s on par, and in some cases exceeds, their Mego style version. It’s a high value for the under $25 price and a great companion to the other Ultimate horror figures.
