Universal Monsters The Mummy Select Version 2 – Toyark Photo Shoot

By Joe Moore on January 29, 2016 at 9:20 pm under Horror Toy News, Random Photo Shoot

The second major release in this wave of Universal Monsters Select Action figures is The Mummy. We’ve already take a look at the excellent Wolfman Version 2, and now we tackle the updated Mummy. Diamond Select Toys has taken a second look at the classic Boris Karloff character, and updated it with an all new sculpt, much more articulation and a massive display base. Toyark sponsor Entertainment Earth provided the figure, and you can check out my full gallery and review, with over 45 high resolution images.

Universal Monsters The Mummy Version 2 Figure

Pros

  • Excellent sculpt
  • Great Boris Karloff likeness
  • Good articulation
  • Solid joints
  • Massive display base

Cons

  • None

Overall
The Mummy comes packaged in DST’s standard Select style packaging. This is an open it or display it sealed type packaging, as the cardback doesn’t display too well once opened. The figure is held on the tray with a few twist ties. The figure also include a diorama display base. The base for The Mummy is an Egyptian Temple interior, complete with artifacts. The figure stands about 7″ tall and has about 16 points of articulation.

The original Mummy figure was part of the very first series of Universal Monsters Select figures. Since then, the lien has improved greatly in terms of sculpted details and articulation. It makes a lot of sense to revisit Imhotep, aka The Mummy, who is one of the core Universal Monsters. The sculpt is all new here and features a fantastic amount of detail. The wrinkled face, the tattered bandages, and even the ring on his hand are all handled with great care. The head sculpt is especially fantastic here, with an unmistakable likeness to actor Boris Karloff. The sculpt is further enhanced by the subdued colors used on the paint job. the figure features very light coloring, giving it a death-like appearance. The details are brought out using a slight wash over the whole figure.

In the original film, The Mummy was a very gaunt creature, and this thin nature allowed DST to really offer some great, unencumbered, articulation. Since there are no bulky folds or odd creature shapes to get in the way, The Mummy offers some of the best articulation in the Universal Monsters line. The range of movement tops even the Creature From The Black Lagoon. The wait features two swivel spots for more accurate and lifelike stances. Both the legs and arms have four distinct articulation spots, with added joints in the wrists and ankles. The joints themselves were tight, but never felt paint locked. The Mummy also sports a good overall wight balance, allowing the figure to stand in numerous dynamic without the need to use the base. Speaking of the base, the figure includes a large and elaborate diorama display. It includes numerous artifacts, such as the Scroll of Thoth and a massive statue. It’s easily one of the best individual display bases they’ve included with any Monster figure.

Fans of the movie, or of Universal Horror in general, should absolutely pick this figure up. It’s on par with, and probably surpasses, the Creature From The Black Lagoon as best figure in the line. The sculpt, paint work and articulation are all excellent. The wonderful diorama figure base is a nice added bonus. For under $24, it’s a hard value to beat.
