MAFEX RoboCop 3 Figure – Toyark Photo Shoot

It’s time, once again, to play a bit of gallery catch up. Today I’m taking a look at the MAFEX Robocop 3 Figure from Medicom Toys. They have previously released figures based on both the original Robocop, and Robocop 2. In the third film, OCP begins forcing citizens out of Old Detroit to make way for the development of Delta City. They employee a group of armed soldiers to bully residents until they leave. After the death of his partner, Officer Lewis, Robocop joins the citizen resistance and is badly damaged. With the help of one of the scientists that created him, Robocop is restored, the prohibitive fourth directive deleted, and gains a new jetpack and arm mounted canon to aid in his fight.

The film is notable for a few reasons. Peter Weller was replaced by Robert John Burke. The film was directed by Fred Dekker (Night of the Creeps, Monster Squad) and written by comic legend Frank Miller. However, Orion pictures pushed the film to be more kid friendly after the success of the animated Robocop series. this resulted in the removal of the graphic violence seen in the original two films. The film ended up being a commercial and critical disaster, which ultimately led to Robocop being relegated to TV.

Overall
The Robocop figure includes three interchangeable lower jaws, seven interchangeable hands, an Auto-9 pistol, a firing effect, swap out chest plates, swap out right leg pieces for the gun holster, a swap out arm canon, a removable jetpack, and a figure stand. The figure is packed in a collector friendly window box, which is fairly similar to the previous two releases.

For the most part, this Robocop figure is extremely similar to the first MAFEX Robocop release. The armor is back to having a natural looking silver, compared to the blue tint of the Robocop 2 release. This, of course, is not a bad thing. The sculpt is excellent, the paint work is very well done, and the figure sports great articulation and range of motion. Like the previous two, this figure has solid joints that never felt too loose. Both hands, the chest panel, the faces, and the canon arm all swaped out with no trouble. Many of the parts included here have been included with the previous two releases. The hands, the swap out lower faces, the Auto-9 pistol, open leg pieces, and the firing effect have all been included with the other two releases. The new additions include the swap out left arm canon, and the jetpack. The two included chest plates are essentially the same, with one having a slight modification to allow the jetpack to sit properly on the shoulders. Missing this time are any battle damaged parts.

Though I still find the original Robocop release (especially the better quality second production run) the best option of the three Robocop figures, the Robocop 3 figure is still an excellent figure overall. I do wish there was some variety in the hands, the lower jaws or some battle damaged parts to really make this a better stand-alone release for those collecting the entire line up. If you ignore the Robocop 3 add-ons, then this makes a solid stand in for a part one figure, and it’s still a great overall figure, and very fun to pose.
