Back to the Future – Ultimate Doc Brown and Ultimate Marty McFly Audition Version – Toyark Photo Shoot

NECA has released two new figures based on Back to the Future. the newest additions to the line include a Doc Brown Ultimate 7″ Scale figure, and a Marty McFly Ultimate “Audition” Version 7″ Scale  Figure. Available first at Walmart, these figures are making their way to general release now. Doc Brown is Marty’s friend and mentor, and the inventor of the Time Machine that causes them both plenty of trouble. This 1955 Doc Brown figure has interchangeable portraits, and some film themed accessories. The Marty McFly is based on the Battle of the Bands Audition scene. It includes swap out portraits, a guitar, a vanishing hand, and more.

• Great printed items included with Doc Brown
• Clever way to attach goggles to Doc Brown’s portraits
• Marty’s vanishing hand is a nice touch

Overall
The figures are both packed in flapped window boxes. Each features artwork inspired by the movie, but no actual poster or paintings of the characters, which is kind of disappointing. That concept worked well for the Tales from Space Marty, but I’d love to have seen character or poster artwork for these two. Doc Brown includes two portraits, removable goggles, two sets of hands, a wrench, a sealed letter, the flux capacitor drawing, and blueprints. The audition Marty McFly figure includes two portraits, two pair of hands, a guitar, a walkman with headphones, and a battle of the bands poster.

Doc Brown
The Doc Brown figure is pretty much perfect in my eyes. The two included head sculpts are spot on likenesses to Christopher Lloyd. The head sculpts have excellent details and great expressions. The paint work on them is outstanding, with crisp lines on areas like the eyes, but subtle transitions in color for the stubble on his face. The body is a solid base body for Doc in his lab coat. The coat itself is a soft vinyl (that could likely be removed for those who want to customize the figure). The figure has double jointed elbows and a decent overall range of motion throughout. The knees may be single joint knees, but there aren’t many dynamic poses I need to get Doc in.

Parts all swap out easily, and with little effort. Joints moved without issue, and nothing felt overly loose or tight. The paper accessories were clever additions, though the small print looks a little muddled when extremely zoomed in. I was impressed with ow they managed to make the goggles removable. Under the hairline, there is a space that the strap of the goggles go, and allow them to slide over his eyes or to reposition them on his forehead. This was a figure I was looking forward to, and exceeded my expectations. Fantastic all around, and well worth tracking down.

Marty McFly “Audition” Version
I’m still not sure what to make of this release of Marty. I haven’t watched Back to the Future in some time now, and I just plain don’t remember the Band Audition scene, even after watching it online. The figure, for the most part, is a re-release of the first Marty McFly Ultimate Figure, but without the life jacket. The head sculpts are the same two portraits that were included with the Tales From Space Marty McFly, one of which was also included with the initial Marty McFly figure. The new additions include the guitar from the scene, the walkman and headphones (from the Tales From Space release), the fading hand, the Battle of the Bands poster, and the photograph that Marty carries with him.

The fading hand is a fun inclusion, and the fading effect looks nice in person. While it seems to pay homage to when Marty is fading in the photo, it will likely pop up again if they do an Enchantment Under The Sea Marty figure. The guitar turned out nice, and the figure includes a set of hands specifically for playing, and they work great. For me, it’s too similar to the first Marty release. The overall figure looks nice. When posted with the guitar and Walkman, he’s a pretty good Marty McFly figure. However, I think I’d recommend this mainly to diehard fans and completionists.
