McFarlane Toys dropped a ton of figures for DC Multiverse over the last month or so and today we are taking a look at the last round before the next batch starts showing up – The Collect to Build Dark Nights Metal : Death Metal Darkfather Wave. All 4 figures are themed to the Death Metal books along with the big guy. The wave includes Death Metal designs for Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman, and Robin King.
We’ve run all 4 and Darkfather for a set of pics. Read on to check out over 120 HD shots and some additional thoughts on each. McFarlane toys sent through some of these for review (thanks!), and we picked up the others at online retail, so they are starting to ship out now.
ICYMI: Make sure to check our recent DC Multiverse Galleries: Batman Beyond, John Stewart, Bizarro, Injustice, Todd Batman, Hellbat, Joker Nightwing, Wonder Woman, and in general – all our McFarlane DC Multiverse Galleries.
Batman with Axe Guitar
Same figure as the single release, but with the CTB parts and the guitar instead of the sickle. As with the whole wave, you have to dig the style of Dark Nights Metal to jump into this. Aside from that, this is a well executed figure. Things that are hit or miss on DCM figures are addressed here – torso cut is flush. Arms have good range and all articulation points. Upper thigh cuts. Functional double joint knee. And for Batman in particular, this is a sharp head sculpt. Cowl and jaw line are closer to what I expect on a Batman. Do this in a Rebirth-esque suit and I’m in. The guitar – just from a cover that played on the “Death Metal” music word play. There are covers for Superman, Wonder Woman, and others, so I’d expect those down the line.
Solid execution of figure from page. Head is a bit “fat” compared to books. I think some art does show the head a bit more thick like this, but interior was less so. Darkseid arm has different articulation style – no double elbow but the bicep is it’s own part, and the wrist has a peg insert with no ball joint. Which I actually preferred even though it’s more simple.
Another Mad Max Wonder Woman in the shelf line up. I do dig this look from the books, along with the LKoE one. Hopefully we get a version without the crown. She had some great long straight hair in those books and a version that is less wavy in the wind would be nice. Maybe toss in a Lasso of Truth to connect to the chainsaw. Execution wise it was good, but the ankles gave me a hard time non stop, very difficult to plant the foot on both sides and have her keep balance.
This is not a repaint of the recent Damian Wayne, but they use a lot of similar parts. Like they started from the same place in the 3d file. Torso, upper arms, upper legs look the same. Head, shoulders, cape, forearms and boots are new. Before I read Death Metal I was like – come on with this, but the story really doubled down on the evil versions of pretty much everyone ever. And Robin King was a surprisingly fun backstory. Spoiler – that’s not an altverse Robin. That’s a young Bruce Wayne that adopted the Robin instead of the Bat, and he’s gangster.
The big guy. He wasn’t in the books long, but he has a presence. The figure is well done, great paint and sculpt. Once together, there isn’t much cutting of corners, he’s a full on big fig. Has all the articulation points. Elbows aren’t double jointed, but a lot of big figs aren’t anyway. Can’t really tell he’s a CTB fig at all. I have the entire Dark Knights line up on display here, and he’s now hanging out with them along with Robin King to fill out that area. Looks great in the back along with Devastator and Merciless.
Bottom line – really great wave if you are into the Dark Nights theme. Well executed, good CTB, no filler. Superman’s head and Wonder Woman’s feet are my only gripes. McFarlane looks busy with DC Multiverse all the way into 2022 if the early listings are correct. But if they go back to this Dark Nights theme, there are still some others I think would be great to have…
