The Black Hole is a sci-fi action film released by Disney in 1979. In the film, the crew of the USS Palomino, including the robot V.I.N.CENT, discovers the remains of the missing USS Cygnus on the edge of a black hole. As they make contact with the lost ship, they meet Dr. Reindhardt, his faceless army, the massive robot Maximilian, and the heavily damaged robot B.O.B. The crew of the Palomino soon discovers that the faceless drones are in fact the lobotomized crew of the Cygnus, and Dr. Reindhardt plans to use these drones to investigate the black hole. As the crew of the Palomino looks to escape, a series of battles and accidents draw them all into the black hole itself, revealing strange visions and giving the crew a chance at survival. The movie itself was not a hit for Disney, though it has gained a bit of a cult following over the years.
Diamond Select Toys has a new selection of Disney action figures which have included Tron, The Rocketeer, and The Black Hole. I’ve previously shared photo galleries for both the Tron and Rocketeer figures. Today I’m taking a look at the three new figures from The Black Hole. The figures include the villainous Maximilian, and a two pack of V.I.N.CENT and B.OB. These figures are available now, and are priced at $24.99 each. Our friends at Diamond Select Toys sent along the figures for us to check out. After the jump, you can read the review, and see a full photo gallery.

Overall
The figures come packed in standard DST “Select” style packaging. The back of each package has a brief summary of the film, and details on each figure. Maximilian includes a figure stand, swap out heads, energy effects, and interchangeable weapons. V.I.N.CENT and B.OB. include articulated figure stands. V.I.N.CENT includes multiple interchangeable robot arms and has, syringes, and retracted hovering orbs (his legs). Each pack also includes a part to build a diorama backdrop, which is based in the interior of the USS Cygnus.
While I was never a huge fan of the film itself, I have always enjoyed the designs for the ships, robots, and faceless drones from the film. There have been a few collectibles released here and there for the movie, but these new releases from DST are some of the best representations. For the most part, articulation is limited on these figures, but that’s really no different from the film itself. In the movie they mostly just float around, and turn their heads, with a small bit of action when needed.
Maximilian is huge, standing over 8″ tall and looks really imposing. It has some articulation, including each of his arms, a rotating neck, a rotating waist, and movable legs. Maximilian’s sculpt is outstanding, and looks really close to the movie version. The second head is based on his merging with Reindhardt at the end of the film. While the paint on the interior face isn’t the best, it works well for what it represents. Maximilian’s front arms feature swap out weapons, and they change out with no trouble, as do the swappable head sculpts. The stand is actually pretty massive, but holds the figure well. The diorama backdrop included seems to indicate that DST is at least planning on more Black Hole releases. There are connector pieces included that attach to the underside of the diorama flooring.
Packing both V.I.N.CENT and B.OB. together was a good move. V.I.N.CENT on its own, even with all of the accessories, would be hard to justify at full price. B.OB. doesn’t really require any accessories, outside of the figure stand. Both have really strong sculpts, and pretty much look like tiny movie props. Paint work is again outstanding here. The included figure stands are articulated, and plug into the backs of the figures. Fro the shoot, I removed one of the middle segments of their stands, just for stability and keeping them a bit lower to the flooring. You’ll need a small screwdriver to tighten the hinges. V.I.N.CENT has a retractable head, and B.O.B. has a semi-retractable head. V.I.N.CENT’s arms pop off easily, and it has small claws that fill in that gaps on the side. The claws on the front are hidden behind a hinged flaps, and those can be swapped out with longer arms. The red rectangles on the front can be removed, and the extended syringes can snap on there. The extended hovering orbs can also be removed, and replaced with retracted legs.
These wound up being the best of the Disney line so far. I really didn’t run into any problems with the figures. All parts swapped out easily, there were no broken pieces, and all joints had just the right tightness. Figure stands worked as they should, and held the weight of the figures without any trouble. Based on my memory of the movie (haven’t watched it in a while), I’m not remembering any accessories they missed out on. Each of the figures looks and feels just right, and are absolutely worth picking up if you’re a classic Disney film fan. Check out a selection of images below, and the full gallery after that.
