A LEGO representative contacted me today and apologized for what happened, and offered to send out a replacement to me. I made sure to tell her that despite the fact that I no longer plan on spending my money at Target unless for some reason I have to, I do appreciate her help and will continue to dabble in LEGOs. That is a great company, they were very professional about it.
Well at the very least I guess its good you didnt get completly burned. Also if they send a replacement maybe you can just return the replacement product and get your money back.

Good to hear man, I wouldve avoided the hassle by returning it to another Target or doing the Walmart swap as someone already said. Kudos for doing the right thing!

No joke, this is the actual e-mail message I received from Target just now:

Thanks again for contacting Target Corporation. Please accept our apologies for the problem you had during the visit to your local Target store.

As it was discussed at the store, we can't help with a return or exchange. The manager said the box was open that is why he is declining the return. Your claim is that the team member open the box, that's why it was open is.You also commented in your e-mail that the box was filled with nothing but trash. So you must have open the box prior to the Target team member opening the box.

However, if your feedback helps us make Target a better place for all our guests. We'll keep working hard to provide you with an enjoyable shopping experience.

Sincerely,

Your Malcolm
Target Guest Relations

You should have seen the pissed off message I sent back. What a bunch of crooks.

Really? Sounds good man.
Do you plan on returning them to target when you get em' back, or would you want to build em now?

Yeah, "Malcolm" appears to have used "opened" four times in a row sans the "-ed".

Unprofessional indeed....

I'd venture a guess that the e-mail was written by someone overseas who doesn't have a fluent understanding of the English language. Using overseas personnel gives American corporations the freedom to cut labor costs by shipping jobs overseas, a practice that, if I remember my history correctly, was put into play in the days the Reagan presidency.

Umm

Did you not shake or move the Lego box around and see that it didn't sound like a regular Lego box? I mean, those parts are in bags and make a certain kind of noise. Noise that a box filled with Boooks and junk wouldn't make. PLus-you could tell if the deal was tampered with.

Ummm, did you not read through the thread? :P He said that he unfortunately didn't really look closely enough at the box.

Yes

I did

and having picked up and purchased many a Lego box, those boxes are very light and airy and make a certain amount of noise when moved.

Looking closely at the box would not negate handling a rather clunky and solid box which is uncharacteristic of a Lego box.

Next time I'll keep in mind that the boxes are very light and air. WTF?

Aren't they packaged pretty tight? I remember as a kid the bigger lego sets felt like regular boxes, the small ones was extremely obvious.

They are not very heavy as the don't contain large bulky parts and the boxes themselves are pretty flimsy and not very sturdy. Not like a GI Joe or TF box is.

Why is that so hard to understand?

I guess next time I decide to buy LEGOs I should vigorously shake the box, and if that isn't enough to ease my mind I should just tear it open on the spot. The bigger boxes are a little heavier and I didn't expect this to happen. I swear, this stupid purchase has been a never ending pain in my ass. Next time I look at this thread I wouldn't be surprised if some guy asks, "Why didn't you use your x-ray vision to look in the box. C'mon dumbass". Geez....

In all seriousness, please bring a scale with you and know beforehand how much the lego set weighs. Then shake it to make sure you can hear how many pieces are in the box and then if that all fails, use your x-ray vision to look in the box, dumb@ss.

I don't have x-ray vision anymore, my health insurance wouldn't cover it. I'm just kidding, no one has health insurance anymore.

I do, but that's just how Canada works =3. Did you at least get a replacement from Lego?

Thanks for the update, DFD. At least once Lego sends you that replacement set, you could use it as your return. But I'd suggest doing it at a different store.

As for not realizing it was a repack when he bought it, maybe DFD doesn't get big Lego sets that often. Then he may not have even known there was any problem.

He said he was distracted and that it was an impulse buy. Assuming he put the box in the cart right after taking it off the shelf, he might have had 5-10 seconds to register that the weight was off and that it didn't make any noise.
