I have seen these pop up on eBay from time to time over the last few years, first around the time of a rumored Bizarro / Superman 2-pack that never came to fruition.

Anyone know the story behind this fig? Will it see retail release? One previous auction ended at $255.

^^ I heard the same story as you, it was part of an unproduced 2-pack with Bizzaro. Yet, I also heard another story, that the figure was supposed to be part of a Super Frinds 5-pack, featuring this Superman, as well as Samurai, Black Vulcan, El-Dorado and a re-release of the Lex Luthor from the Gotham City 5-pack.

I agree. I always called this head sculpt "Jim Thorpe Superman," but he is very Cain-y.
