As for The Thing, actually, it wasn't a remake, it was another adaptation to "Who Goes There?', and was closer to the story.

Speaking of which, I am getting to see BOTH Creature from the Black Lagoon 3D and The Thing in the theaters on Sat and Wed.

I also agree that Silence of the Lambs is not a true horror movie, but then again, Alien is a horror movie under the guise of a Science Fiction, so...

Like I said, Carpenter's The Thing is almost like a sequel to the original since it uses some footage from the original as recordings found. I've never read Who Goes There? but I've found it very difficult to find a copy and at this point no longer care because that movie is my jam. If they got a professional swimmer and used proper Andy Serkis level mocap I could see a remake of CftBL. I'd prefer actual costume and practical effects, but touching it up with CGI for different underwater scenes. I find that the problem with so many remakes is that they choose films that already delivered the story as great as it needs to be the only thing they actually bring to it is better effects, but somehow completely botch retelling the story and characters. The remakes of A Nightmare on Elm Street and Robocop technically have better effects, but found unique ways to rape and butcher the stories and characters of iconic and beloved films. Technically movies like CftBL didn't have a great amount of character or very hard-thinking story, they're simple and I love them for it, but it would likely be better to remake CftBL than it was that they made Nightmare and Robocop. I know this opinion won't be shared and will be hated by a good amount, but to me remaking a movie from 60 years ago that has potential to benefit from modern writing is a better idea than one from 30 years ago that still stands tough and honestly better than most films pushed out today.

Also what's up with remaking foreign movies like only years after the initial film? The Departed did it with Infernal Affairs and that one actually worked quite well, but Let the Right One In got remade into Let Me In with only a few years in between and the American version stank. [Rec] was made into Quarantine almost within a year, surprise the American version sucked. Oldboy was remade and even Josh Brolin couldn't save it from being another stale remake. Apparently Americans really don't want to read. Subtitles?! Fuck that, remake it! Some of these remakes aren't necessarily awful, but they're very lazy and don't even attempt to set themselves apart from the original. Maybe that's why The Departed worked, because they put effort into making it their own distinct telling of the story, probably because Scorsese knows how to direct and they got a great cast.

I actually like Let Me In more than that Swedish version. Not to mention the amazing adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Fincher did.

Anyway, the talk of Alien Isolation got me in the mood to want to play around with some more dark pictures of my Alien figures. As such, I took a few pictures with different lighting of one of my display shelves.

Actually Sharks commonly enter areas where swimmers are. Great Whites typically are drawn to where seals are and seal populations tend to inhabit areas near readily availible food sorces which are typically provided by Humans. Also many shark species follow fishing boats so encounters are more likely then you think. Whats scarier the events based on imagination or Reality

Can we stop with the shark facts? Obviously some sharks come close to shore, otherwise shark attacks wouldn't be a thing. The big thing with Jaws is how huge it was, yes some prehistoric sharks were larger than Bruce but they were all large ocean predators and stayed in deep waters similar to whales. The same reason that whales get beached can apply to sharks and the bigger a fish is the harder time it has to fight current and return to sea. With less water the fins create less displacement which is also fought by moving currents, a large fish's best chance of returning home is getting caught in a drift current carrying out to sea. Crocodiles eat more people per year, but we don't really care because that's in Africa and not an immediate danger to us.
Imagination is scarier I guess. In reality serial killers are usually going after people they knew, and even then they're just people who eventually get caught. In Imagination Land serial killers have super powers and are seemingly unstoppable. In reality getting killed/eaten by animals is an uncommon phenomenon, in Imagination Land every animal is out to get humanity and they're all giant, bugs too so carry extra Raid. In reality dead people are dead, but in Imagination Land they can come back as a zombie or be like a vampire or something. Obviously reality is way more likely to happen, but fear itself is a product of our imagination running wild. We rightly fear some things in reality because our imagination wonders "what if that happened to me?", fear is a safety lock we fashion to save ourselves from predicted danger.

You want REAL scary watch "the killer speaks" and "killer kids" they make most horror movies look like romantic comedies. there are sick people out there that rival anything seen on the screen. and at lest when an animal attacks you it's just out of instinct or hunger, people do it just to do it.

Ok; I've been re-watching a lot of old Horror movies (it is the season). I know most of us are adults (or at least pass for it) but what was the first Horror movie you watched? and did one ever scare the crap out of you as a kid?

My first: the howling, I was like 5, and it freeked me out because there was a "Howling" Tv series on USA network at the time that I watched regularly, in it the werewolf guy was a good guy that went town to town helping people and fighting monsters. the show was very mild in bloodshed and horror. in the first few minutes of the movie the werewolf slaughtered a kid and his mom. I was left confused and upset. I remember just going cold and saying "why... why would he do that?... they.. they didn't seem bad!"

another that got to me was Childs Play 2. I got in trouble for throwing my Teddy Rucksbin in the trash after seeing it. The sick part was that before yelling at me, my mom just took it out and put it on my bed with no explanation. I think I might have had a mild heart attack when I walked in and saw him there.

I saw The Gate as a kid and that scared the shit out of me for like a month. Looking at it now it's not even a good movie, but damn those stop-motion imp demons are creepy when they move and the eye in the hand was freaky. Now I find them antiquated and almost laughable, now the only thing that bothers me with eyes in its hands is pale man from Pan's Labyrinth.

That kind of reminds me of a local cable access show I would watch as a kid. "B Reel" They would review all of these bad 80s horror type movies and then show the clips that had nudity. I don't know how they got away with it, unless it was just that no one was watching to censor them to begin with, lol. They would always say there were a few things to making a true "B" movie:

Nightmare on Elm Street 1 the part where the girl gets drag up and on the side of the walls of her room, scared the crap out of me when I saw it on t.v. back when I was a kid.

You know what's kinda weird? The first time I watched A Nightmare on Elm Street I was already 16 and had previously seen Alien, The Thing, Jaws, etc. so it didn't actually scare me that much, other than the occasional jump scare made me kind of go "ehh!" but I really freaking like that movie. I think it's the effects and Robert Englund that won me over, especially that blood volcano. Johnny Depp's very first movie and he gets turned into a blood volcano of wondrous practical effects. The same for Texas Chainsaw Massacre, didn't really scare me but was unnerving, but I love it anyway.
NECA has teased that in the same fashion as the upcoming 30th anniversary ultimate Freddy Krueger (which I'm very hyped for) they will be making an ultimate 40th anniversary Leatherface figure as well (though it may not be until next year).

I started to play Alien Isolation today and I am enjoying it quite a bit, but it is frustrating when I die and have A LOT to redo. Funny enough, I did not get killed by the Xenomorph yet. It was those freaking mother ****ers this girl ran and got that killed me several times. Then, I thought I had to kill them to get the part I needed, which was not the case, so now I cannot get the no kill trophy.

Please let me know if you still like it by the end! I was dying to play it, but the reviews I read seemed to agree that the gameplay (stealth, running and hiding) grows stale early on in the 16-20 hour campaign. That was my major concern leading up to its release. I got bored with Outlast (similar gameplay) about halfway through, and it was only a 6 hour game. The enemies that started out "scary" were just annoying by the end, as was hiding and having to wait until they decided to wander out of the area.

I was still tempted to buy it due solely to the fact that it was an Alien game given the proper respect and attention, but my comic sub got kind of expensive during the last couple of months. Stupid crossovers and unannounced price hikes...

Anyhoo, I've been in the mood to sit down for my yearly viewing of The Thing as well as its prequel, and suddenly I remembered the game. Anyone else here ever play it? I have it on original Xbox. Never beat it, got to a certain point and completely ran out of ammo before a boss fight, and got totally screwed over by my save point. I'm thinking I'll fire it up again after watching the movies, start over.

The 2011 The Thing was good, not great, but good. The monster never seemed to be as freaky or sporadic as Carpenter's, but in terms of being a nice prequel set up movie it worked perfectly. Loved how the ending started to play the Carpenter theme bass line (the entire theme was pretty much just bass). The game was "eh", played it once, never bothered for a second go. The idea was better than the delivery. The Blair Witch game also sucked.

I like that movie.

The tv series might be better, though. The first 3 or 4 episodes had some bad pacing due to too many abrupt flashbacks, but after that point it got really good. Richie Gecko had a much larger role in the story, and the cursed were snake people as opposed to vampires. Made it more than a simple retread.
