The Problem I have with the New Mattel Megos

I like Mego's. I think they are very cool. I loved playing with them as a child.
I still have nearly all of them along with the playsets.

But I think the look hokey mostly. They were great for their day but today with our technology and sculpting ability, Why make their features so vague and ball shaped? And their clothes as though they could not afford to go to a tailor?

Remember a few years ago when Hasbro made something similar but highly improved?

They had moveable fingers, massive articulation. The costumes were much better. Very cool head. Man Hal Jordan and Aquaman looked awesome.
So why go back with the throwback style?
I really want them to make these figures but I would rather them use them push the envelope into the future rather than recreate the past.

What do you think?

i never had any of the originals but i still like my green arrow.at first i thought he was wierd but then i got used to him.

jimster2010 12-28-2009 08:17 AM

I like them. If a toy company is going to make a Mego doll then it better look like one.

Ghost Story 12-28-2009 10:06 AM

you have a good point, I guess my problem is why are they making mego's? why not take the concept of megos, namely an 8inch figure with mutliple point af articulation and cloth costumes and make an updated (vastly updated not minor updates) version utilizing the fullness of curretn tech.

Does anyone remember the hasbro ones?

jimster2010 12-28-2009 11:30 AM

I remember the Famous Covers as well as the Hasbro ones and they were great but they were not Mego and in my opinion that were not an extension of that line either. Just like I do not consider DCUC an extension of the Super Powers Collection even though the name is going the package with wave #12.
Let me just say the way the retro dolls look is more about the nostalgia than it is about how far the scultping techniques have advanced.
I think it is an affordable way for collectors to get those items that they did not hold onto.

Ghost Story 12-28-2009 11:52 AM

Thats a great point. about people being able to afford them. I would hope someday we get to some same size but with sharp up to date styling.

TheSymbiote 12-28-2009 12:04 PM

does anyone know how much they'll cost at TRU?

Ghost Story 12-28-2009 12:10 PM

I have heard $15 and $20 so I am not sure.

jimster2010 12-28-2009 01:44 PM

Now bring on the BATMAN related retro dolls. I am dying for them.
