Good deal for a USS Flagg

So a local comic book shop has a USS Flagg with General Keelhaul for $500. I am not yet sure if it's in good shape or complete, but if it was is that a good deal?

shortysben 07-29-2012 05:12 PM

hey man, I would say if its 100% complete, and in decent condition its a GOOD deal, if not, then its an OKAY deal at best...

trekking95 07-29-2012 05:19 PM

Well if it all the decals are in good shape, there is little to no yellowing, the loud speaker is is not missing, all the guns, radar, etc. are not broken or missing and the cargo wagons or whatever those things are supposed to be are there would that be worth it?
I am guessing it is complete and in good shape since I know the guy that owns the place and he is fair in his pricing and most of his items are in good condition.

So does that mean all the eBay listings for $1,000-$2,000 are a rip off?

DHeezy81 07-29-2012 06:33 PM

What things are listed for and what they're worth are rarely the same thing. Go to advanced search, click completed listings, then search the USS Flagg and see what some actually sold for. I bet if you slapped down $400 in cash he'd take it. Always negotiate.

trekking95 07-29-2012 06:47 PM

What is a Flagg in good shape worth to a GI Joe collector?

BigHanksCustoms 07-29-2012 07:12 PM

You're talking the 6 foot FLAGG I assume right? I picked up the 3 foot 'drivable" Flagg for like $40.

I'm not the biggest Joe fan/collector by any stretch, but I wouldn't pay more than $400 for a pristine FLAGG.

Definitely do a little negotiating.

trekking95 07-29-2012 07:18 PM

The 1985 BIG one! I will wait until more members say what they think before I buy.

ToyAddict 07-29-2012 10:06 PM

If it's something you really want, it's probably a decent deal. I don't know that you could find one, in better shape, shipped to Canada, for $500. Plus you have the benefit of seeing it in person before going for such a big purchase. I'd say it's a fair and square deal.

You could ask if there's anything he wants in trade, to bring the price down a little. . .

I have nothing worth that much I would part with. And besides the shipping part of it, would you pay $500 for just the Flagg?

Yeh, if it's mib it's a steal, if it's loose, complete and gently used it's still a deal, with most toys this huge you can assume that it was expensive, even back in the day. IE not many parents bought it due to the price and size. Shipping with items of this scale are always a factor, as it's larger then a friggin hellicarrier! so shipping from a seller could easily be around $100 or more. I would say if u have the room for it and want it and can justify spending hundreds of dollars for it, then get it. It is hard to find and pricey, but if Hasbro ever decided to remake this you're resale value goes way down. I'd say buy it if u like it, if it's going to be something like an investment/resell piece then hold off unless u want to flip it right away on ebay. Large items often get damaged from display/storage/use over the years and will hurt the value, that's why not too many kids have boxes for their toys as it took too much room, once the items are loose, more likely to devalue the figure.

This?

Holy shit, that's a big toy. This makes the SDCC Hellicarrier look like an ironing board.

Yeh, toy is massive like 5-6 long. There's a seller on ebay who has 1, and 1 of the pics is of it sitting on a kitchen floor and the bloody thing take up like 8 floor tiles lol. It's also in scale with the figures and vehicles, Hasbro should of made the hellicarrier that big, and charge an extra $40.

No! Really? I thought that an in scale aircraft carrier would be 50 or more feet long. Or maybe that's just the Helicarrier.

And in that ad it says 7.5 feet, not 5-6! That's huge!

LapuLapu 07-30-2012 01:26 AM

Trekking you could trade that Tron Castor figure (is that right?) for that USS Flagg I betcha he'll take it :p

Would rather have 10 Tron Castor figures then a Flagg, so no can do. Good idea though. ;)

tlasjr 07-30-2012 02:33 AM

a scale carrier would be 1/18th of 1100 feet. Its still a huge toy though.

So if I did that right around 60-62 feet? That's huge! :D
What would be the size of the Flagg if it were a real carrier?

I didn't expect you to have $500 worth of trade fodder. I was just thinking if you had a $30 item here, a $20 item there. . .maybe you could knock a little of the price and pay the rest cash.

Would I pay $500 for a Flagg? No way. But. . .

--I don't have room for it.
--I don't have that kind of disposable cash (I've got to replace the roof on my house!)
--I'm probably about to sell off my GI Joe collection because my son shows no interest in Joe.

So that's just me. If I wanted a good Flagg and had the money (and I'm talking enough spare cash above having 6 months' worth of living expenses on hand), $500 is fair.

Also, would the Flagg get played with? $500 seems like a lot to me to let someone play with. I think I feel more comfortable splurging on a Terrordrome or the GI Joe Headquarters playsets. Any patch of floor space can be imagined as a runway for the Skystriker. Or just make a flight deck/runway out of wood.

The FLAGG would be roughly 1/184 scale. they do make some 1/180 scale aircraft to dress up your carrier, but 1/180 is usually used for commercial aircraft models.

Great point. If play value is important ToyAddict makes a compelling reason to consider. Now were I a hardcore Joe collector, I'd have no problem buying the FLAGG as I don't handle my collection much other than display and the occasional reposing session. I would have the FLAGG in the center of the room, on a table just big enough to hold it but allow the ends to hang over. Use it as the center piece of the room and have the shelves line the walls. Make it like a museum room.

Is that a rare figure?

I had the G.I. Joe Mobile Command Center as a kid and it was my favorite thing as all my toys (except LEGO) used it. It's more practical than the FLAGG and one day I'll get another one.

Assuming it's a Nimitz class it would be 1092 feet long

Super rare. They had trouble with the likenes rights and supposedly pulled the 200-300 thee had produced and gave them to staff. I'm sure trekking knows more about the history than I do.

Is it the small one (4" maybe) or is it a larger one? I saw one not that long ago.

I meant the Castor figure lol.

ToyAddict 07-30-2012 07:28 PM

The rare Castor figure is 6 inch.

Thank you Iceman, I wanted to suggest that MCC as a Joe base that would be a better purchase than Flagg but my brain wasn't remembering what it was called this morning. Yeah if you're going to play with a Joe base, Mobile Command Center is a great choice. Not nearly as expensive, and more versatile.

Unless you want it for bragging rights, I can't think of a good reason to get it. You'd probably have a hard time reselling it if you had to. I mean, you could sell it for $500 but out of that you'd pay for the shipping. So if you're buying it for an investment, I'd say it's not a good investment. If you're buying it to play with, I'd say your crazy but you probably won't find it again in that shape for that price. If you're buying it for bragging rights or as a piece you want to complete your collection, go for it.
