M3T4L V1KING could use Job Advice
Greetings fellow Arkers,
As many of you know (because I've mentioned it God knows how many times), The M3T4L V1KING has had some financial problems as of late. And by that, I don't mean that I'm having trouble paying bills or anything. I still live at home with the parents so I don't have to worry about that. University is less than a month away and I still don't have a job to help pay for it. That's the problem. Nowadays everything is online. Even when I go down to a store with a resume in my hand, I get shooed away and told to do it online. So, I've applied to MANY places, MANY times and I haven't heard from any of them yet. Even the place where my brother works, he put in a good word for me and I didn't even hear back from them. So I'm here for advice if you everyone could be so kind as to give me some. Is there anything I could do that could possibly help me get a job that I so desperately need? |

I'd also suggest signing up with a temp agency (or temp-to-hire is even better). They would basically shop your resume around on your behalf. The down side is that the assignments aren't always stable. One may only be a couple of weeks, while another could be four months. But it would definitely help in the short term, as far as getting a job.
Of course, there's always the fast food industry... |

Have you told any of these potential employers that they can't ignore your girth? That might help.

I was going to also chime in about the Temp Agency thing or in a pinch try job placement at your college. With a clean looking resume, you can ride the line between office jobs and light warehouse jobs. When I was a temp, I did:
If you can't do internships in your preferred field, temp jobs are a good way to get exposure to jobs or industries, so you can be more confident that you are studying to do the thing you really want to do. None of the jobs were glamorous, most of them were droll, some of them had some fun people, but a paycheck's a paycheck when you are in school. You younger guys have a MUCH tougher job market in which to compete, so keep your chin up, always, employed or not. Things can't stay bad forever and staying with the folks a few years longer than you may have wanted to beats many of the alternatives, and when you get to be my age, you will definitely look back fondly on summer vacations, time at home with the folks, and low responsibility jobs. :) Congrats, young sir. |
There's always drugs and prostitution.....
Seriously though, even if you are studying for thar degree for that perfect job, LEARN A TRADE. You will never go hungry, for food or action figures! |
