Unanswerable questions that need discussing!
Hey guys, I've not posted here in a while, I've still been collecting MU etc but my collecting focus has gone over to the comics themselves...
Which leads me to my main reason for starting this topic... I've recently read Spider-men and I'm also currently reading Avengers Assemble, and I also caught up on Guardians of the Galaxy, Thanos Imperative Annihilators etc and in each there's something thats bugging me. In Spider-men Peter looks up Miles Morales in his own reality and then says "OH MY GOD"... Now I love cliffhangers like this but seeing as it doesn't seem to tie into either of the two realities at the moment it makes me wonder where it's going next... another crossover with the ultimate universe? And in Avengers Assemble, its really bugging me as to How Thanos is back and how the Guardians of the Galaxy got back together, how is Drax alive, how did Starlord return etc? Now I know the answer for the latter one is that they're trying to make a jumping on point for new readers with the avengers movie being out and all that lot... and tying it into their plans for the Guardians of the Galaxy movie Thanos being the villain etc, but there are some major gaps that I want to be filled. Do any of you guys have theories? Do you think they'll address these issues at some point? |
avoid reading avengers assemble.

So far Avengers Assemble has claimed to be "in continuity" yet is the farthest thing from any actual continuity stories I read or have read. As far as I'm concerned this is not 616 until those blatant discrepancies get addressed, and even then it won't make that run acceptable. Very poor story telling in my opinion and I like Bendis (Long time Ultimate Spider-man fan, New Avengers and Powers) and I'm very disappointed he agreed to do this story arc and declared it in continuity while ignoring everything in continuity preceding this story.
As for the Spider-men ending, I don't see how you think that cliffhanger suggests any potential to crossover with the ultimate universe again to be honest, I just took it as he realized Morales' 616 counterpart is someone of serious consequence to Peter given his reaction to this unknown revelation when he looked him up. I teased the idea that it would be a trip if 616 Miles Morales was really the guy who killed his Uncle Ben! Now that would have been cool for me. But I think they've addressed his uncles killer on multiple occasions throughout his 50yr history. Unfortunately I don't read 616 spidey so I won't find out until someone tells me what happened. |
Keep in mind, I have not read any of Avengers Assemble, so I don't know how good or bad it is, personally. Would it be that difficult for Bendis to retract his statement, either via press release or something within the comic that proves it's not a 616 story?
And are the discrepancies you guys referring to due to the one year gap (where any number of things could have happened in our absence) or are there plot points that specifically contradict previous events/characters (such as one character lost an arm after his daughter was killed but now never had a daughter and has both arms)? I think the part about 616 Peter and Miles is simply a plot point to be picked up on later, either by the current creative team, or a different one later down the line. I don't think it necessarily means another crossover with Ultimate Marvel, but it's possible. Comic writers do this kind of thing all the time and the good writers are able to weave in and out of established continuity with new stories using these dangling plot threads. The bad ones, on the other hand.... |
well trebleshot,
here's some of the things that are off in this book: Tony is spouting about Cosmic stuff being above them. Avengers have dealt with Cosmic stuff countless times in the past. Then there is a comment about how they barely know what Thanos is? You're team has fought the dude several dozen times. They have detailed files on him in their database for crying out loud. Hulk is being written as the savage Hulk with Hulk Speak even though he isn't speaking like that at all anymore in his current book and hasn't been for a while. Then Bendis wanted to show a romance with Hawkeye and and Widow completey ignoring her relationship with Bucky and Hawkeye's with Spider-Woman. Then there is the inauguration of Avengers Tower in issue #1. That tells you it is before Children Crusade, (where cap took Wiccan to the Tower after Wiccan made the criminals unconscious,) and after Fear Itself, where the Tower was destroyed, and Cap said they were rebuilding it. So CC is after Avengers Assembled. And that's not even including the blatant disregard of how the hell GotG and Thanos are there. So to answer your question, given the presentation of this book it intends to be a part of 616 continuity without adhering to the statusquo's of the characters as they are supposed to be at this point in the timeline that this story takes place in. But that's Bendis, sometimes. His take can sometimes be that, "well I haven't written them doing this before, so it must not have happened the way I want to tell it" type of logic, IMO. That's how I felt about his recent Avenger's title at least before Assembled started. |
