Articulation Question
 

When someone says "T crotch", is that the same thing as swivel hips? I've also seen "H crotch/hips" and have no idea what kind of articulation that entails. Can someone clarify?

For the record, this was on reviews for some DC 6" figures, so it might be specific to their band of articulation. Posting this in the Marvel section because it could have relevance to past/future figures and to be honest, I don't really visit other sections of the forum >_>

I'm guessing T crotch is if the hips and groin look like the letter T. I've also heard of V crotch but not H crotch, honestly.

I don't know these things either. I also don't know what Rocker Ankles are. I just see people post about them over and over, and I'm just like... "Alllrighty then...."

One of these days I'll get around to finishing that section in the reference guide. T-crotches are indeed ones that have a pelvis that forms a "T" due to the hip joints (and sometimes the waist joint) being swivels and the hip joints are cut perpendicular to the waist. The majority of Amazing Spider-Man 3.75" figures had this kind of crotch, as did most of Star Wars (until recently) and the Green Lantern 3.75" line.

V-crotch is pretty much the same thing, only the cuts for the hip swivels are set at a 45 degree angle to the waist, forming a "V". Usually you only see this with female figures, for some reason.

Based on that, I would have to assume that "H-crotch" is referring to the DCUC-specific hip design (which officially is a variant of a ball joint, only most of it is hidden inside the pelvis area).

Rocker ankles are where the figure has a second joint that connect the foot to the ankle at an angle to the actual ankle joint, allowing the foot to swing or "rock" from side to side in relation to the ankle/leg. This allows the figure to stand in a more natural/relaxed position with the legs angled out but the feet flat on the ground. Figures without rocker ankles either stand in the military-style "Attention!" pose if their feet are flat or one or both of the feet are angled off the ground slightly.

Thanks Treble. I'm still fuzzy on how one would know the hip articulation by describing the crotch. Don't most the Avengers toys have T crotches, yet they are certainly not simple swivel articulation.

If I describe a toy as having swivel hinge hips, everyone should know what I'm talking about. If I say a figure has a T crotch, that doesn't really say much of anything in regards to articulation. Or am I still confused? :D

T-crotch refers specifically to single joint swivel hips, like the lines I mentioned above. If it has more than one joint in the hip, even if it's just two swivels, it is not a T-crotch. Also, toys that have hips which are ball-joints or universal joints (like Nick TMNT figures) are not T-crotches, even if the crotch does form a "T".

The term "T-crotch" is generally used these days as a derogatory term for limited articulation in modern figures.
