<Spoiler> IM3 toys: What could have been

I just came back from the movies and I'm even more upset at the Iron Man Assemblers. I don't want to spoil the movie so if you haven't seen it, Why are you reading this? Get out of here.

Besides Tony and company in civilian clothes, we could have had

Volcana
Amadeus Cho
Molten Man
Lava Man

Sure their orgins are slightly or vastly different from the characters in the film but it could have work. Because Whipwash was Russian we were able to get Crimson Dynamo and Titatium Man for Iron Man. Hasbro screwed us.

uberlad 05-05-2013 03:47 PM

The armors went by too fast for me to realize what we could be missing, but I would add Pepper's rescue armor to your list of missed opportunities.

uberlad 05-05-2013 03:50 PM

An extremised-up Kildare figure would have been cool, too.

He got a Lego fig, but not a 4 incher

See he kind of reminded me of the Molten Man and the film did mention Roxxon as well.

that whole movie was a mess

SPOILER ALERT! Movie details discussed below..

Thank you. 3 reasons this movie pissed me off and why I hardly even want the toys that could have been..

1. IM3 was the biggest piss off I've ever experienced in Marvel movies mainly because they take the near Lex Luthor of bad guys for Tony, and make him a damm JOKE! I was beyond excited for the Mandarin to be in this movie and I was more than let down. Not only was he not in the movie, they mocked his entire character with some silly comedic one-liners and caused them to be unable to even reprise the role appropriately! I hate this more than I can say. In turn, I mayyyy want a new Mandarin so I can pretend he's nothing close to what they made him.

2. I do not want the lava people from volcano land because they'd kill all my Iron Man toys. Extremis infused civilians are apparently the most powerful foes in Iron Man's existence. They can touch him.. just.. touch him.. and he loses. Suit shuts down, they can tear his near indestructible suits in half.. Iron Man in this movie was a super sissy because these regular civilians get the extremis and as powerful Steve Rogers AND they have hands that can destroy anything. Oh, and they heal like Wolverine. This was just a bit much. Yes, I read the Extremis arc, but they weren't able to 100% dominate Tony by simply touching him..

3. Finally, all the armors. I read a book in Target about all the armors in the movie. Red Snapper? The suit with pinchers to help rescue people? Lame. Why did we not get a "Heartbreaker" super chest arc blast shot to obliterate one of the baddies either? I was so excited for that. This said, some of those suits would be cool to get as individual releases, not ridiculous builder crap. However, why was Tony in malfunctioning suits for most of the entire movie? He didn't have a suit that worked for the first nearly 2 hours of the film. Everything was breaking or low on power.. we barely got any Iron Man in this movie.. even with the crazy amounts of armors in the end. Was it entertaining seeing him jump into different suits and see them all flying around? Sure, but why were they all getting completely destroyed so hard? It bugged me that his armors seemed pathetic and weak all movie long after being able to combat an alien race taking over the planet in just one suit, go through a worm hole, survive, and come back. Put Mark VI back on.. because everything else you've built apparently sucks.

Another Marvel invasion movie? Jesus christ this is the third!! In three years!! I might wait to see this on DVD, I was completely underwhelmed with Avengers and Captain America, Iron Man 2 great Thor not bad... But another invasion plot sounds straight up retarded.

Previous invasion movies.
Fantastic 4 2.
Thor
Avengers the invasion plot furthered. I really thought this was like Dark of the Moon from Transformers to be honest. Of all the plots from old comic books and villians to work with I don't understand why its just aliens they are fighting and that is the smartest thing Marvel Studios/Disney Studios can come up with. I fear for Star Wars 7 hearing this.

Quinten,
Don't be pissed off yet by this. The truth is, having seen the movie, is this may be a set up. Mandarin, as in Ben Kinsley, may actually be the Mandarin OR someone else. I mean think about it, how well would it fit if come Avengers 2 you find out that Kinsley was in fact the Mandarin and managed to get the VP arrested and his own replacement in the White House?
I wouldn't be surprised if Iron Man 3s Killian was nothing more than a patsy and a red herring for Mandarin as the terrorist group behind him has been around for 3 movies now. I don't believe Killian would have been the guy a bunch of Middle Eastern terrorists follow. As such, it would be a great twist to find out we were wrong all along. If that is case it might just restore your faith as the Mandarin would then have been the biggest bad guy on the block, pulling all the strings all along. Just a theory mind you but I don't think I am the only one with it.

Um, not exactly.

Marvel didn't make Fantastic 4, another studio did, poorly I might add. As such it doesn't exist in canon with Marvel movies any more than the XMen do or the Ghost Rider, Punisher and Daredevil/Elektra fiascos (although Daredevil, Elektra and Punisher are now back with Marvel).

Thor was an invasion movie? Thor lands on earth, eventually his evil bro sends a single machine to earth to kill him and three of his friends arrive to help him out. Thor does, I guess, invade the Frost Giants world and I guess vice-versa in a sense but in actually an all out invasion doesn't really happen to earth.

Avengers, yes, does have an invasion, so I guess we are at a total of 1.

I would love to believe this, it was about the only thing that kept me from screaming in the theater itself! But after reading an interview with Sir Ben about the reimagining of the character, I have no hope. They wanted him to be different, they wanted to shock viewers the way TDKR did with Talia being the villain in the end. They said they found it difficult to shock comic viewers any more because they know the story, it's been written, and they look at it as to how good it is in reference to the comic and so it's more of a judging process than an enjoyable one. Which, though I can understand, does still piss me off. Because you can find ways to shock us just fine.. THANOS! Whedon knew how to shock and awe at the end of that movie! Why completely destroy a character to shock the fans? It's angering.

trebleshot 05-06-2013 10:18 AM

Quinten,

There's absolutely no way Marvel or Disney could have gotten away with Mandarin as he exists in the comics without pissing off a hell of a lot more non-comic viewers than comic fans.

Also, it's been said before but it bears repeating: the Marvel Cinematic Universe is not the comic universe. Just because it exists in one does not mean it will exist in the other, or even maintain the same form/function. Eric Savin is nothing like his Earth 616 counterpart, and neither is Killian.

As for the armors, the MK42 was the main one he was using and it was a prototype. He was developing a new mental-control system when the rest of his armors were either destroyed or trapped under a bunch of rubble for a good chunk of the film. Most of those were built between Avengers and probably all prototypes as well. It's also explained in the film that he was suffering from insomnia due to PTSD and that the armors were designed and built during that period. So of course they'd be dodgy. And weren't the Mark VI, VII and VIII destroyed right at the beginning of the assault on his home (I believe they were the three on the main floor of his workshop/lab)?

I believe that this film took the question that Captain America proposed back in Avengers and ran with it: "Take away the armor and what are you?"

But hey, sorry you didn't like the film or the way Mandarin and Tony's suits were handled. I humbly disagree. I also really like boombatty's idea of a second twist with Kingsley's Mandarin, too.

I have no idea what you're on about here. There was no "invasion" in Iron Man 3.

spade 05-06-2013 02:50 PM

Well looks like my topic has been post jacked. If you guys wanted to complain about the movie why didn't you make your own post about it?

quinten182 05-06-2013 03:04 PM

Well thought out response treble. I agree, different universe explains it all pretty well. I just wanted to see a super villain like the comic Mandarin on the big screen terribly. :(

And we didn't jack the thread spade, just delving into the movie a bit more since you told us all to go see it. :P

Amadeus Cho would have been a fun pickup, but all the talks of the extremis people as a figure are lame imo. I wouldn't want hasbro to waste their manpower on this when there are so many better things to make currently. Give us some of the armors of this film and I'm good.

Spade, I feel ya but I have to say it made your already cool thread that much cooler :)

As for your suggestion, I hear you on the other figs that could have been made but I would be fine if we got all the armors only from this movie. As for the Assemblers, give them swivel elbows and bending knees and I would have supported them to the end. Having said that, I am an Iron Man geek and bought the assemblers anyway, multiples in fact, and customized a bunch with heavy weapondry.

As for your other suggestions, Volcana, etc., I think those would be main MU line at best. This is a movie line and outside of Armor repaints which are cost effective for Hasbro I don't see much more coming our way from an IM3 line. Now IM2 had a few extras in the name of Titanium Man and Crimson Dynamo as they kinda, sorta cross into the movie through the comic versions but the plethora of leftover figures from that line killed the chances of a repeat unfortunately. Iron Man 2 was a collectors dream, 18 million figures, repaints and repaints of repaints. One day we will look back at IM2 as the Golden Age of Movie Figures but for now we have Assemblers and nothing more. Looking to the other movie lines and elbows and knees are a thing of the past for most of the movie releases now.

Personally I would cough up $ to a Hasbro Kickstarter to make the little bastiches in elbow and knee glory...

1 Vision figure says they do a Yuzhan-Vong invasion.

Honestly, I'm kind of glad they didn't do Volcana and the others. They would have probably done something similar to the IM2 MK VI figure with the light-up chest gimmick and look how long that thing shelf-warmed (and is still shelf-warming in my area!).

Jmacq1 05-07-2013 07:03 AM

I think the OP's list is a whole lotta far-fetched. Iron Man 2's comic series got plenty of characters that were not in the movie, but they were still Iron Man characters.

Captain America pushed it a tiny bit with Captain Britain.

You've just proposed a list that basically has...no Iron Man characters.

That's not a realistic assessment of "What could have been." Honestly even "Tony and the gang in civilian clothes" is unrealistic based on past patterns.

I sure did. I based it on the characters and their power set. None of us work for Hasbro so anything we say is far fetched and over reaching. It's not a proposal because it not made to be taken seriously or presented to Hasbro. Can we be a fans of the 3.75 lines and have fun?

Shoot. In that case I want me an Iron Man 3 Scourge of the Underworld! :P

I'm not sure if you've read the Extremis storylines in Vol. 4 and 5 of Iron Man's comics... but they are that powerful.

I think Slapstick should have had an Iron Man 3 figure. As well as Obnoxio the Clown.

I completely agree. I never thought they would do Mandarin in a movie and was worried when they announced him. Plus they had A.I.M. in this movie right from the start and I was worried about them trying to have too many villains. I was releaved when the reveal happened as I felt it was the best way out of the situation. What else could they have done? Had Mandarin disappear halfway into the film and set up a sequel? They used the character to fool the audience with all the prerelease stuff and hide the real villains, which is exactly what happens in the movie so it was clever. People are just mad they didn't get alien rings and space dragons, which were never going to happen.

bmorr 05-08-2013 09:06 AM

I kinda wanted to see AIM in their bumblebee looking outfits.
