I don't think the show will do that. I think they spun the idea onto Merle. Also, Hershel is in a similar situation. It would be too derivative and redundant to do it to Rick now.

Who actually buys busts?

I've actually been buying all of the DST Walking Dead bust banks. They look great on display.

Rick looks strangely like Kurt Russell in The Thing here. Cool bust. Indeed, Rick probably won't be losing his hand in the show, but thanks for the spoiler warning anyhow.
