How do you collect Star Wars?

Hasbro puts out alot of Star Wars Products every year, so what's your strategy? Do you buy everything or do you narrow it down to a particular movie? Are you a troop builder?

For me I collect certain characters and scenes. I mainly collect Cantina Aliens and Characters having to do with Jabba's Palace. I also buy Luke Skywalker and Han Solo figures.

What's your Strategy?

MegaPrime33 12-03-2008 07:19 AM

When I used to collect it was based on figures and vehicles that I liked, and it was all mostly OT stuff. I opened and displayed everything. Then they ran out of vehicles that I enjoyed so I just got the figures but kept them sealed. Now I stopped buying all together. Still have everything though, and I still love the vehicles. I would display them all if I had the room. Pride and joy is the Imperial Shuttle. Got it for $50 at KBToys online, when they bought out the stock of FAO Schwartz.

I also got heavily into prop replicas and own about 7 replica lightsabers. They're incredible, but very expensive. I stopped buying them for that very reason.

Mostly a trooper builder. But I have a number of named characters. Clone Wars and NT. As those are my preference. I want to get some vehicles. AT-TE, AT-AP, Trade federation tank, and spdier droid. I also need to work on building up my droid army.

I am not really a SW collector, only thing I actively buy is Boba Fett stuff including novelty. I also like to get at least one version of each main character figure from the original trilogy.
My younger son is a huge SW fan, so I buy quite a few figures to enjoy with him as well, mainly Clone and Storm Troopers.

SPLIT LIP 12-06-2008 06:36 AM

I try to get a lot of the Clone Wars stuff, mostly Clones. I usually shy away from vehicles, but I do want the Republic gunship for all my clones to ride around in. I really like Grievous, but don't own a single figure of him. Legacy Grievous is who I'm looking for right now. I barely collected at all before this year, owning all of seven figs. (C Cody, Airbourne trooper, the droid that breaks in ANH, a less-than-great Darth Vader fig, a crappy R2D2, and a crappy Obi-wan and Anakin)

Now I have about six Clones from CW, one of which is messed up after a failed repaint project. Other CW include Yoda, Ahsoka, R2D2, Obi-wan and a battle droid. I also have Legacy Plo Koon, Clone armour Obi-wan and Commander Gree. (who is the best clone fig I've ever seen) Clones are what I go for, but I might try and get all teh major players from the CW series eventually.

I can't seem to get excited about collecting SW stuff for its own self as the SW story's 'done'. I seem to prefer open-ended universes where I'm free to make up my own adventures, and we know how everyone in the SWverse is born, lives, and dies so there's not any wiggle room to go off in my own strange direction when I want.

All that being true, I do get a lot of the weird aliens and random Trooper figs to use as part of my Universe Asunder collection where I've recast the Clones as the successors to the Kree Imperial Star Army and the aliens as just new individuals of that same race set in the modern day. I dunno WTF I'm gonna do if the MU line actually gives us Kree soldier armybuilders, tho. Maybe just make them the officer class and keep the Clones as the enlisteds.

Oh, and I use the Jedi and Sith as clones of themselves with a Sith Lord I made up named Darth Vespaar drawing down their 'souls' from out of the Force to reanimate the clone bodies to do his evil Sith bidding.

Last year was the end of the line for me (full time collecting). I have 1 of every fig on every card, 1 of each vehicle released per line and a heck of a lot of dlx, mega, special packs. Basically if it came out I bought it. This was the first year I cut back......................way back. I don't know, maybe the price points, re-releases, repaints, etc etc. Now it is pick and choose. Maybe when they change the cards again I will look at the line with a different mindset.

Steel 12-06-2008 03:09 PM

My SW collecting is very specific.

First, I only collect figures of certain fav charcters (Darth Maul, Vader, Anakin, Jango, Boba etc)

They must not be preposed or stuck in any wide stance, ridiculous position.

Only then will I buy the figure. I've bought nearly all the clones and most recently the new Grievous which is unbelievable.

Flint 12-06-2008 06:59 PM

My brother asked me the other day "So how many Luke Skywalker's do you need exactly?"

I told him one can never have too many. Now if they'd only make more Lando's (my favorite SW character)

I used to be the same way, back in 1997 when the Special Edition releases kicked off the modern era. I collected everything right up to and including a few TPM figs, buying doubles of the carded figs to have one sealed and one for display/play.

By the time I stopped, I had three long trunk-sized tubs full of carded figures, 3 carry-cases full of loose, complete figs and another large box full of the boxed vehicles/beasts. It was just taking up too much space at the time.

I stopped cold turkey for a few years, but have picked up a few here and there after ROTS came out (mostly OT and ROTS). I also have bought one of each mold for the SWTF line, though I consider them more part of my TF collection than SW (same with the Marvel Crossovers).

Eopie Herder 12-08-2008 07:05 AM

I used to collect everything, but got rid of most of it. Now I focus on Luke Jedi, Jabba's Palace/Sarlacc Pit scene, Darth Maul, Qui-Gon Jinn and most things with TPM.

CryoPrime 12-10-2008 09:26 AM

I normally only collect Transformers, and a little Bionicle, but I always have loved Star Wars and the toys(I have a bunch from when I was little) but the Original Clone Wars cartoon on CN was the coolest thing in the world, and I've been watching the new show religously. lol I started collecting Clone Wars guys now, I mainly want Clones and Droids to fight them, it's harder to get droids though, there aren't a whole lot of different ones, like the clones have all kinds of different ranks and stuff, I don't think theere are any Droid Commander yet are there? The one's with yellow/Blue stripes?

TheNotoriousROB 12-18-2008 08:10 AM

I love the new Clone Wars CGI Cartoon, so I'm going to try and complete that line.

bigkid24 12-18-2008 11:40 AM

My Star Wars collecting has evolved so much over the years that it's ridiculous. Originally when the orange card figures first came out I just tried to focus on getting the best representation of each figure so I wouldn't have to get multiple variants.

That turned to I need each version of a character so that I can set up little dioramas of each environment (which I never actually did aside from the cantina and mos eisley).

I bought most of the crap from TPM, and I bought a lot of the POTJ? line (green cards covering all the movies up to that point.) And I tried to buy most of the Jedis in the line along which continued into AOTCs and I also bought one representation of each of the main characters.

When ROTS came out, I went to midnight madness but didn't buy a thing. Lately I've only purchased Yoda. But for the most part I don't collect any of the figures.

Of course Star Wars LEGO is another story.

Weirdwolf 12-21-2008 10:34 AM

I would be mainly inclined to pick up the vehicles I like, such as the AT-AT (if I can ever find one with the right price), the X-wing fighter, TIE fighters/bombers, AT-ST's, and other ships. Not too much into the figures themselves, though.

Chaos Muffin 01-05-2009 09:47 PM

Im pretty much down to just buying clones & vehicles now.

Episode 3 motivated me like crazy, still recovering

DarthNexus 05-30-2014 09:22 PM

Ive had to limit myself to Black Series 6'' otherwise I'll go off the deep end with all the 3 3/4 stuff out there… I'm making customs for all the figs of the black series 6'' that aren't yet. And Im slowly army build my stormy's and clones.

Foreddyn 05-30-2014 10:59 PM

I tried to complete the 'main' cast before. Then I really got into collecting the creatures, even getting vintage and POTF versions. But I soon lost interest afterwards. So I rarely buy any merchandise anymore. Last ones I did get were females, can't get enough of them ladies.

I still can't get myself to buy Mara Jade because of her head sculpt though.
