The gift set you mean? Like the TF and MU figures?

Dr Kain 11-06-2013 05:21 PM

TRU is opening up at 5PM on Thanksgiving day? Don't their employees have families to see on Thanksgiving? :rolleyes

Such is the life of a retail employee. When I worked at a video store, I worked Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve/Day, New Years Eve/Day. Not all every year, but usually 2-3 of those days every year. Now, hopefully, they're at least offering double pay for that time and that any employee working those times volunteered.

salsa4datass 11-06-2013 06:43 PM

yes. finally skylander's swap force at a good price for my son...

This is the first I heard about Toys R Us opening at 5pm also, guess I can cancel any turkey day plans.
Volunteer? Ha. Not sure if they changed anything this year, but last year you had to work Thanksgiving/black Friday shift. Working the overnight hours (I think midnight to 6AM) gets you an extra $1 per hour. No 1.5x or 2x pay. Full time employees may get something but not part timers.

That still is not fair to retail employees though. I used to work at Best Buy (for 5 years), I know how much Black Friday sucks. The problem is, stores are opening up earlier and earlier and not even letting their employees know ahead of time. Two years ago I walked into the store and asked one of my former managers what he thought about the store opening at midnight and he had no idea what i was talking about. Not a single person in corporate had even let a single employee know they would be opening at midnight until two weeks before Thanksgiving AFTER it was already all over the media. Last year, they found out they were opening up at 10PM when the ads came in. -_-

Thanksgiving and Xmas are the only days retail employees have that are supposed to be a guaranteed day off. This working bullshit has got to stop. Soon stores will be opening up at 5pm on Xmas day.

Worst part is also the managers who have to work split shifts. Managers that work on Thanksgiving 7pm-7am have to be back at 5pm to close.

Superquad7 11-07-2013 02:27 AM

Yeah, I'm not happy about TRU opening up this early on Thanksgiving.

Joe Moore 11-07-2013 05:18 AM

It's not just Toys R Us. that's going to open Thanksgiving day.

- Kmart is opening at 6AM
- Staples is opening at 9PM
- Most Walmart stores open regular hours
- Belk is opening at 8PM
- Kohl's is opening at 8PM
- JCPenniy is opening at 8PM
- Macy's is opening at 8PM
- Office Max is opening at 8PM
- Sears is opening at 8PM

"There is no such thing as Thanksgiving. It's just a day you people made up to get out of work, so screw you!"

Joe Moore 11-07-2013 08:27 AM

None of this is new guys. Seriously, Kmart has been open all day on Thanksgiving for years, though usually at 7-8 AM. Plenty of other stores are open all day as well. CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens, automotive stores, etc. It's a little late to be gettign bent out of shape about it now.

If you work on the holiday they should pay 1.5...Also I can understand if it employees volunteer to work on the holidays but the forcing is what I'm against for the ones that actually want that day off.

CdtWeasel 11-07-2013 03:02 PM

Oh and I found out about Toys R Us opening at 5pm looking at that ad here. No mention of that at the store yet. I wouldnt be surprised to find that most the supervisors dont even know they are going to be at work at 3 or 4pm on thanksgiving yet.

What's K-mart?

:D

Well looks like things changed this year. In my store at least they are staring with volunteers to work that first 5pm shift. We will get paid time and a half for thanksgiving as well. So I can't be quite so cynical now.

jetsandheels 11-08-2013 07:34 AM

I think a lot of it stems from demand as well. Stores would not participate in these practices if consumers weren't lining up and coming out to shop in huge numbers. While it seems like a disturbing trend in retail, remember that retail exists in the first place to make money.

Having said all that, I am not going out anywhere on Thanksgiving Day. I might on Friday though if I am feeling brave enough.

That's good that they are at least starting with volunteers and offering overtime/holiday pay. I've worked black friday, Thanksgiving, etc.

Once you get past the first 2 hours, it becomes basically just like a busy weekend. Two years ago I strolled into Best Buy on Black Friday, around 11AM, as they were having a good deal on TV I wanted. I was in and out in less than 20 minutes.
