SHIELD's 3D printed Maria Hill

1 Attachment(s)
Another 3D printed figure. Printed through Shapeways: Stranger than Fiction by Strangefate on Shapeways

This time it's an agent of SHIELD... Maria Hill perhaps ? She does seem kinda bossy.
She has a working clamp holster for the pistol that should be able to hold other misc guns.

Looks more like Connie Chung

I'm kidding.... Nice work.

uberlad 02-03-2014 03:08 PM

Your customs always look great. I cannot wait until I can get access to 3d printing!

NoodleChow 02-03-2014 03:53 PM

pretty damn snazzy. how much work is it to sand or prep the parts?

warmachine6 02-03-2014 04:19 PM

you seem to be doing better than hasbro

Strangefate 02-03-2014 07:17 PM

Thanks guys!

NoodleChow - They come polished from Shapeways so there's no work to do.
All you have to do is remove some of the left over printing powder from some of the cavities. (It's a powder based printing system)

It usually takes 3-5 mins to make sure all parts are free of powder and then you can start painting.

Warmachine - Thanks :) it was their ugly females that led me to make my own in the first place. Figuring out printable articulation and simple assembly kinda took up some of the focus, but adding more complex articulation down the road shouldn't be a problem now.

Diabolical 02-04-2014 09:34 AM

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but I was under the impression that the powder printers came up with a much higher resolution so there wouldn't be as much need for sanding.

She looks good man, very cool.

Strangefate 02-04-2014 10:52 AM

Yeah, there's no need for sanding. Shapeways can still mess up by orientating the parts wrong before printing which will still give you printing steps here and there, but that rarely happens.

The powder surface finish however is rather granular by default and they have a polishing process that basically smooths it down to what you see in my images.

jimsloth 02-12-2014 10:22 PM

PLEASE scale this down to MU size! I love it. So much better than the black widow reuse they packed with the SDCC exclusive. looks great!

behindthemask 02-13-2014 02:46 AM

Nice figures, lovely work, but the prices on the site suck, especially for a whole figure, or $25/2 barrels? seems steep especially when they're unfinished. Some of the headcast prices aren't 2 bad.

Strangefate 02-13-2014 06:50 AM

Jimsloth - One of the too many side tasks I have is working on making the figures work at 3.75 inch... eventually I'll get there, just have some things and changes to figure out. The smaller scale makes 3d printing problematic here and there.

behindthemask - I totally agree and I wish I could do anything about it. 3D printing simply isn't cheap (yet anyway). There's a lot of stuff I'd like to do, props, modular walls and floors for dioramas etc, but it's just not worth it given the current prices of printing.

I'm looking at cheaper alternatives for some of the stuff (like the barrels and all the other cool stuff I'd like to do) but the figures themselves wouldn't be affected sadly.

Optimus Neeson 02-20-2014 07:57 PM

Your custom printed figures are bad ass. You should take commissions for original models. Like, let's say I show you a drawing I made, then you turn it into a 3d printed figure.

Strangefate 02-21-2014 09:55 PM

Thanks Optimus :)

Commissions would only be possible if they fit the current female body I have. adding costumes or clothes isn't that much work.

Creating a new body from scratch and doing all the articulation plus costume takes a few weeks of full time work, so customs would be rather expensive :)

Brownfinger 02-22-2014 07:05 AM

That's some of the better work I've seen come from Shapeways prints. Hats off to you, sir, those are all very nicely done. Gamora is nothing short of incredible. Very tempting, especially since the one revealed recently by Hasbro kinda blows.

Strangefate 02-24-2014 11:10 PM

Thanks Brownfinger!

And yes, Hasbro does rather weak female figures :/

snowviper 03-04-2014 05:01 PM

That's amazing! You do good work. Can't imagine what that would cost to print though.

Provost, you cheeky bastard.

Strangefate 03-06-2014 06:51 AM

lol, thanks guys :)

I received some new prints on tuesday (can't keep up painting them) and the Skyrim-ish figure I had there is now available too, as everything worked out as intended with the print.
