New MAFEX Darth Vader Preview - The Toyark - News

Joe Moore 05-23-2014 06:29 AM

The figure looks great. But is anyone willing to spend $40+ on a figure like this? Especially when the Black Series version will be half that cost?

I find that doubtful. Don't get me wrong - that MAFEX figure looks great. But IMO it's not good enough for me to pay ¥3800 (MSRP for a standard MAFEX) or more, depending on the online store I'd use to import it. Sure, some may prefer the MAFEX over the Black Series, but I wouldn't exactly call it a "killer".

You're kidding yourself if you think the Black series version of Vader will be half the cost of this. That upcoming figure has "Boba Fett 2.0" written all over it....

By the time that Vader hits the aftermarket, this one might end up actually being cheaper... =P

A smart man pre-orders figures he thinks will be hard to get at retail. Black Series Vader will cost $20-$25 if people want it. If anyone pays more, then it's their own fault for procrastinating.

Not necessarily. Many places that do preorders will only allow you to pre order certain figures as part of a set, especially in the event that the figure is a greatly desired one, or is a short packed or variant item. Not all of us are completionists, nor do we either want or need (or can afford) to do this, thus forcing us to hunt the figure down in stores, or to turn to the secondary market in order to track down the figures that we (along with everyone else...) want.

I had to do this for Boba Fett when he came out, because honestly, I had little to no interest in the rest of that wave. It had nothing to do with procrastination, and I'm sure many others had to do the same thing, given the number of Greedos and Slave Leias that I continue to see warming the pegs. The same with Maul when he was released. Now, I don't know the case count for the upcoming black series wave, but given Hasbro's track record with the villains of this line of figures thus far, I can see Vader becoming Boba Fett 2.0. easily and the ludicrous pursuit of a black series figure happening all over again. While I was speaking in jest about the Mafex Vader being cheaper than the black series one, I was also being serious. Either way, its a win for us all, because now there's another quality option out there should we not be able find the figure we really want.

I can get Boba Fett's even now for $25 a pop, if someone pays more, it is their own fault that they went to places like ebay where delusional fools list stuff for double retail. I get what you mean that the secondary market is ludicrous. But if you really want the figures like I do, you shop around. I honestly hate ebay for the most part. Too many idiots posting Stormtroopers and Boba's for 40 bucks it's a sad thing. I just bulk bought 7 sand troopers for the price people want for like 3 stormy's.
I think I'll stick with Black Series though, I haven't heard very good things about Medicom at all. I heard they use biodegradable materials which would be awesome if you wanted your toy to be green and breakdown over time, but I don't want my toys wearing out before I do lol.
