MOTUC Snake Mountain Unlikely

Little Chance for Masters of the Universe Classics Snake Mountain

Typical Matty response, "blah blah blah not enough people bought the first one blah blah blah"

Phantomcrow 06-19-2014 10:37 AM

I am fine with this. As much as I love having Castle Greyskull, It is a beast, cost a fortune, and takes a lot of room. CG is great to have, but I am more than happy to them keeping to smaller things. I would still like them to do a Point Dread with the Talon Fighter or even perhaps the Fright Zone or Slime Pit. They are all smaller items that might only be around 100$. I don't see them taking more plastic or tooling than Granamyr.

cobracobra 06-19-2014 12:13 PM

Again the true Nut Lick personality comes out. Saying that it was the fans fault.

Not surprised, back before they fixed the inventory glitch on the Matty site they had well over 1000 CGs for sale.

$300 is a lot of money for many people. I know I ended up paying $300 + $90 shipping to Canada + another $60 in tax bringing my total to $450.

It's an amazing playset, and I am impressed Mattel had the balls to make it, but sadly I think it will be the last great action figure playset ever.

Always possible but at this point it is doubtful we will explore something this large again. We always expected their would be a percentage of presale customers who never complete their order, but it turned out their were way more and in the end we just can’t muster the logistics at this point to attempt another playset, even with a “deposit factor”.
The ship has sailed.
Oh great, THERE are now 10 year olds answering THEIR emails.

trebleshot 06-20-2014 06:43 AM

Sad to hear, but not all that surprising. CG was difficult enough to get off the ground and I was highly skeptical SM would ever be done at this scale.

Really?

The only reason Mattel even made CG is because enough people had promised to buy it. Then a lot of them backed out, leaving Mattel with some very expensive shelfwarmers (so to speak). So they'll probably lose money on the whole project. Do you honestly think they'd be willing to risk trying something like that again?

But in this case it is. Or at least the ones who promised to buy CG and then backed out.

Lol. Makes sense since a lot of collectors act like spoiled children anyway. ;)

You don't REALLY think they lost money, do you?

Is it the fault of the fans that the final product differed greatly than what was described on the pre-order page, leading to all of those cancellations?

I think it's a great looking playset, but what was delivered is greatly down-sized from what was shown on the pre-order page. Yes, it was "subject to changes", but changes that were made were too significant to ignore. They should have known their finicky fan-base well enough by then to know that those changes weren't going to fly.

Can you imagine the cancellations if Sideshow solicited a Premium Format figure that ended up being grossly out of scale with their other PFs and was significantly smaller than what people pre-ordered?

Realistically, they are probably going to break even, but to them it will look like they "lost" revenue. Mattel definitely won't be making the amount they projected, which I think was the main reason they pulled the trigger in the first place.

Obviously they had nothing to do with the changes that Mattel made. Unfortunately those changes are part of the toy-making process.

Regardless of the reasons why, the cancellations were still done. Mattel is a business at end of the day and on the books, this project performed poorly in their eyes due to the larger-than-expected number of cancellations.

All the more reason for them not to attempt Snake Mountain, then.

Apples and oranges, my friend. The only thing a Premium Format figure and CG have in common is the price tag. I understand what you're trying to get at, but a PF figure is not a playset. What you're saying is closer to Mattel putting out another MOTUC figure that was not in the same scale as the rest of their figures.

In the scenario, I would agree with you and I wouldn't want to buy it, either. But I also wouldn't constantly rail against the company for disappointing me.

Couldn't agree more. I think it would be downright foolish.

Comparing the castle to a PF figure is an apt comparison, IMO, simply because they are similarly priced and for a similar market; the collector. Perhaps it wasn't the best comparison, but my point was not about the change in size of the product, but about the scope of the changes.

It doesn't really matter what the product, delivering something that is in some significant way(s) different than what people ordered is a bad move. It seems naive to me to assume the majority will be happy with the changes.

Mattel will mention the buyer cancellations, but would they acknowledge the reasons at this point? Probably not. That would mean that they might share in the blame for the castle not being the success they thought it would be and I think that's what bothers a lot of people.

I assume this isn't directed at me specifically, since I've never posted anything about Mattel on this board before, nor do I collect their products, but I definitely get what you're saying.

That said, I'd think you'd be pretty used to it by now, being a moderator of a toy forum. ;)

I read that and all I hear is "We are too chicken shit to do anything unless we have your money in our hands ahead of time. We are sorry you love this property because we really have no faith in it despise all the years you have fallen for our subscription crap"
