Marvel Select, any good??? Here's my plan

Hey guys, me again the new guy, had a search on here and there doesn't seem to be much on the Select figures. Are they seen as worthwile for a collector, I've watched some reviews on you tube and they seem to get ok reviews.

After much thought on the subject I think I've come up with my game plan. I was wanting to collect all the Universe figures and was stuck between keeping them in the boxes or opening them up, if I'm honest with myself I would never get to the point of managing to buy them all (unless I won the lottery) and I don't have anywhere to display these type of figures.
This is where my daughter comes in she has shown interest in collecting and loves Marvel so was thinking of her starting on the Universe figures just the core ones probably about 20-30 or so. She can open them up, play with them and we could have a go at ACBA and make a display in her bedroom, this makes me and her happy, best of both worlds.
Now for my piece I'm thinking of picking up now and again the Universe comic packs when the price is right, I like the look of these and would be happy keeping these in the boxes plus I've already bought my first two examples.
Now for the Select, because these seem a bit more grown up and seem more like a mini statue, I think I could persuade the wife to let me display these in our bedroom on my own shelf, as i won't buy all of them just a good 10-15 of the ones I really like, I'll display these open because I like the accessories that come with them, also my local comic book shop sells them so are easy to pick up.

So guys what you think, does it sound like a plan and will I be a worthy collector with the Select figures???
Cheers Lee

En Sabah Nerd 02-26-2015 03:25 PM

Why wouldn't you be a "worthy collector" for Select?
Your plan sounds solid. I've only got one Select figure myself, Venom, but I really like it. Like "it's my favorite toy of Venom I've ever had" like him. The pose is way behind something like the current Legends figures but the overall look is more detailed and Select figures are bigger.

jwyss234 02-26-2015 03:42 PM

Whether or not Marvel Select figures are worth while is mostly up to you. If you're happy with the character selection, articulation and sculpts then you'll probably enjoy them very much. I usually buy the larger characters to fit in my Marvel Legends display.

Not every Marvel Universe figure is worth getting. There are many from the first few waves that are duds and were replaced with superior versions later in the line. Also, keep an eye on the Avengers Infinite line since they are releasing some of the old MU figures like the second version of Daredevil, which is WAY better than the original DD figure.

I would also point out that some of those comic and multipacks are a good way to get the nicer versions of the core characters that your daughter may want. Depending on the price you may want to pick up an extra one for her to open and play with.

LapuLapu 02-26-2015 03:47 PM

Just as you said some of the Select figs like the older ones are more of a statue than action figure since they are lacking in the articulation and has predetermined dynamic pose. The newer selects has better articulation. So if you just want to pose and display, Select would be a better choice specially with the included accessories. And Select have pretty much all the main stream marvel characters so your option of 10-20 figures would be good as long as you keep your collection Select only and not intermingle with Legends then scale wouldnt be a problem but then again its your collection so whatever makes you happy. Any collection no matter how big or small is a "worthy" collection.

donmeca2020 02-26-2015 06:59 PM

my opinion Selects are damn near the best Marvel figures to buy for an adult collector.

They looks awesome opened up and displayed on a shelf, some are massive looking and they really look like the actual characters. the only problem with marvel select, they are very limited with the characters they make. for some reason they mostly like to produce movie related figures as opposed to more of the comic ones.

marvel Legends however have damn near every character, but they are a tad smaller and the detail is not as fine as the selects. either way you would win getting these.

I made a comment in another thread a month or so ago about the character i would like to see marvel select make and low and behold hasbro brought these characters to the legends line.

As for marvel universe figures they are tiny, and probably perfect for kids to collect and play with. i recently got one like say 1 month ago and i was a little underwhelmed with its size and detail.

LapuLapu 02-26-2015 07:45 PM

^^ Depends on what Marvel Universe figure you got that made you feel underwhelmed , check out WW Hulk and let me know if you still feel the same, the same thing can be said about the legend and select figures not everything is nicely made.

I like MU more than legends. They capture the same level of detail all things considered but have more characters and take up less space. I actually wouldn't recommend MU to kids who want something to play with, too many of them are fragile in my experience. I don't know which one you got, but in general it was the best collectible line for Marvel for years and Legends is just now playing catch up because Hasbro decided to pull the plug on 3.75".

Starlord67 02-26-2015 08:55 PM

I'm a Legends collector and use Select to add to my collection. Watcher, Thanos, Colossus and Mephisto are nice additions. I have all the X-men selects and they are Awesome!!

Spyne98 02-26-2015 09:05 PM

I dig the selects, but sometimes they are just too big for me personally. I'm ok with a big Hulk but the select one is way to big for my tastes. That being said, they would make for some cool "mini statues" as you put it. I am looking to sell some so if you're interested, hit me up.

Skoob 02-26-2015 09:26 PM

I have just one Marvel Select figure so far: the movie version of Captain America. From the waist up, it looks better than any of the alternatives that I've seen on the same general (6"-7") scale. My only gripe is the big gross hip ball joints, because my intention when I buy a figure is generally just to place him in a standing position next to others, and you can't do it with this guy: the legs want to stick out to each side, so to make him stand you have to give him an 'in-step' that makes him look like he needs to go to the bathroom. I plan to buy more Selects going forward, but hope future articulation is more like NECA or Star Wars Black Series. It doesn't matter to me if you can make a figure do the ballet splits or bring his foot up over his shoulder. Hope that helps. Rgds

If you're already use to the size and scale of the ws stuff, why don't you just go with TE legends?

Skoob 02-26-2015 09:54 PM

I take my collection one figure at a time, regardless of brand or line. If someone produces a version of a favorite character that I like better than any of the alternatives, that's the one I scoop. Rgds

Would love to be able to buy two of each, but funds are limited, who knows i may end up opening them up depending how her collection goes.

Yeah defo just going down the display route with the Select and wont have anything to worry about the Legends as im not going down that route, just the Universe for my daughter that will be separate to my display.

She wont be playing with them as such, we'll be playing together and setting up them up as display so nothing to worry about on that front if they are fragile.

Everything i see of them i like the look of especially size, i dont like the standard Hulk one (i think the head is way too small for the body) when i get Hulk i think i will go for the Disney store exclusive one, i think that has a better look. The only big one i dont like the look of is the Thing, it doesn't look in proportion especially its arms and fists and i don't like the pants and boots it wears, i hope that one day they will bring a better version of it out and who knows im not really into the movie versions of the Select figures but if they do one for the new new Thing movie version that might end up perfect.

That is very cool, another question why do the Select figures seem so cheap?

kylactus 02-27-2015 01:34 PM

I think a lot of people see them as a third wheel. you have a 6" and 3.75" line which are standard, widely used action figure scales. where as Select tends to be a bit large. I think a lot of collectors who got on with legends don't see any reason to rebuy everything one inch bigger. notice though that the Select figures that are compatible with other scales (like Watcher and Mephisto) go for big bucks because everyone who collects any scale wants them. there are a few others you will have to dig deep for, like unmasked Deadpool, the Zombies, Ultimate Venom, carnage, and a few others.

They used to be 19.99 till recently so for me 24.99 is a bit more but still a solid price for what you get in general. If anything I think the Legends stuff is overpriced.

At least the Legends are doing a lot better with the BAF than they used to. I think the BAF of Puck and Rocket Raccoon were the biggest slaps in the face. Most of the Selects I buy are to fit in with my Legends collection.

they look cool if you plan on keeping them sealed up with the backboard art and what not. i purchased the black costume spidey. when i seen it i decided i wasn't going to even bother opening it, but rather just keep it sealed up and on my comic table.

Unfortunately the symbiote Spidey just wasn't that good, I blame the blue tinting.

yeah, but when you remember that we use to get things like a 3lb sentinel, a 14" Apocalypse, and Giant man they still have a way to go to get back my respect.

GarbageMein 03-24-2015 05:07 AM

I just get whatever I like from each line no matter how stupid someone else thinks it is.

Law78 03-24-2015 05:37 AM

I actually bought my 1st set of select figures at the weekend, I went to MCM comic con at Birmingham and bought Gambit, Juggernaut and the new Cable figure, I haven't opened any yet as they look so nice in the packaging but I must say I think you get a lot for your money, at £20 in the UK I think they are a bargain but you guys in the US have them even cheaper, they may not have the level of articulation the same as the smaller stuff but just for display I think they are ace.
