moss man chia pet? sold, if I can get one of course.

KITT 07-06-2015 01:33 PM

The prices just don't match the product. Are people really going to buy rainbow colored MOTU figures?

Dolemite 07-06-2015 06:33 PM

These figures are absolute garbage.

SDCC exclusives just get worse and worse every year. Just take an existing figure, re-color it all fruity, and charge 400% over retail for it. They can all gargle a bucket of dicks.

The Test Shot style He-Man and Skeletor are the Giant Size versions, which sell for $75 each from Mattel. At $95, that is not a 400% mark up.

Dolemite 07-07-2015 05:50 AM

Obviously, I wasn't trying to be mathematically precise. I was trying to make a point.

My point was that SDCC "exclusives" in recent years almost always tend to be overpriced garbage made just to bleed unassuming attendees dry.

Joe Moore 07-07-2015 05:57 AM

Judging by the amount of money it costs to get to the show, and the fact that most of those that do go are quite plugged into their specific fandoms, I can't buy that attendees are "unassuming".

Dolemite 07-07-2015 08:09 AM

Geez, so nit-picky over verbiage while ignoring my original point! :)

Yes, it costs dough to get into SDCC, and people all have their "thing" that they're into, and they're generally all too willing to spend what it takes to get those "things." But SDCC (or, rather, the companies attending it) are all too willing to prey upon that by upping the number of exclusive releases each and every year while the quality and effort into producing them seems to be going down consistently at the same time. A lot of SDCC exclusives, from what I remember, used to be unique items specifically made for the con, and they were usually of very high-quality. Hell, some people, like NECA, still do that (like the Mrs. Voorhees/little Jason retro set). But there just seems to be a growing number of vendors who take existing items and change the colors slightly or whatnot, or churn out something cheap, slap an outrageous price tag on them, and put them out there, knowing they'll be bought. Crap like He-Men figures with rainbow-colored limbs or a cardboard house for Reaction figures for $75.

Hell, now that I've taken the time to type all this out, I guess I really can't blame the companies for doing this. After all, they are in business to make money and these items are indeed selling. It's the people that are buying this junk that I guess are more to blame for this phenomena growing like it is.

Of course, I say all this while coveting Funko's un-masked 2015 SDCC Jason Voorhees POP, although that one at least has a new head sculpt, dammit!

I know, I suck. *sob*

Joe Moore 07-07-2015 08:51 AM

I guess that I'm just ok with not liking everything these guys are doing. I know that not everything is aimed at me, but I don't wish ill on those that don't cater their exclusives (or regular releases) to my particular tastes.

Like, I couldn't care less about the ReAction haunted house, but there's clearly a group of collector who want it, as I see people asking how they can get it if they can't make the con. Just because it's not my taste, doesn't mean those who like it are gullible. A lot of collectors are not okay with that line of thinking.

Dolemite 07-07-2015 10:05 AM

You have a good point, there. Hell, I've certainly blown good dough on stuff most people would consider pretty dumb.

As have I for sure.

ludovicotek 07-07-2015 11:34 AM

Probably safe to assume that everybody who visits this site, and others like it, have spent substantial amounts of money on things that aren't the least bit appealing to others. Best not to judge people and for things they enjoy and are attracted to. If it's not for you, that's cool. To each their own.

And while I can certainly agree that plenty of companies seem to be churning out "exclusives" that seem not so exclusive, at least there seems to be a plethora of collectibles available at the present. I can't be mad at that.

KITT 07-07-2015 01:11 PM

I have to agree with what's been said about SDCC exclusives in recent years. Exclusives are supposed to be 100% unique and special, not made by means of reusing tooling, with no paint apps, AND from a line (MOTU Giants) that has already been established as a failure.

The MUSCLES are a cute throwback but c'mon. I can get better crap out of a gum ball machine for $6 worth of quarters.

The reaction figures are a nifty idea but it's just an insult to sell them as fake prototypes with no paint apps when it is clear as day that it's a cost cutting measure, meanwhile the price for them is sky high. They should of made an Orko reaction figure as an exclusive, and the other 4 could have been sold (with paint apps) as regular figures, first at SDCC then nation wide.

Chia Moss Man? LOL! I can't really throw on it because it's a good idea, put the price for it and everything else Super7 is peddling is just robbery.

Another good point that was made is people buy them. Naturally toy companies are going to continue what they do because well, they sell. They sell because the target market (completists) has deep pockets, the products are advertised as limited run, and the customers believe it. Marketing is evil, but it works on most people.

Still, I believe in value. People who spend that kind of money on stuff like this should get better value for their dollar.

Really? Says who? Don't get me wrong, I definitely prefer unique sculpts/characters as exclusives, but there isn't a hard rule about it.

Not official MOTU characters, which is the entire appeal here.

LOL Genius idea. Price is steep.

Value is perceived by the individual. The price is without a doubt not low, but "value" is a different thing entirely. I personally think the novelty of a lot of these items are absolutely great. I personally love the throw back/nostalgia factor that they bring with them.

KITT 07-07-2015 02:50 PM

Nah, When the toy company's cost to make a product is super cheap, then they mark it up percentages in the hundreds, that's not value, that's screwing the customers. It's more important to the toy companies to reduce the quality and cut costs as much as needed to maximize profits, when instead they should be trying to find a happy medium where the quality is still high and they make a fair amount of profit. But greedy people are going to be greedy people. It doesn't help when fans are like, "take my money please!" because that only encourages the evil toy companies. :)

"Really? Says who? Don't get me wrong, I definitely prefer unique sculpts/characters as exclusives, but there isn't a hard rule about it."

Says me. ;)

I see I need to type a, "this is only my opinion" disclaimer in front of my posts from now on.

"Not official MOTU characters, which is the entire appeal here."

So wait, Skeletor Beast Man and Trap Jaw are not official MOTU characters? Oh kay.

Yeah, I guess your right. Some people can find a bag full of belly button lint in someone's garbage and deem it of value, but at least they got it for free.

Ah, man. I didn't mean to contradict your opinion. Just expressing mine as well, that's all.

You said you could get better crap out of gum ball machines. I said you couldn't get official MOTU characters. Or at least that's what I meant.

Really? Come on, man. No need to get ridiculous with your comparisons.

No, I actually agree with your point of view. Have you ever heard the expression, "One person's garbage, is another person's treasure." ? Thank you for reminding me of this. :)
