No More Slave Leia's?

Is "Slave" Leia Merchandise Being Retired?

Augustus_Cole 11-03-2015 08:53 AM

I can't see why?!?!

BWAAA-HAAAA....eh-hem..

ultraman zoffy 11-03-2015 09:00 AM

They should just lose the "slave" description of this character and rebrand her as "strong heroic warrior with tyrant choking action chain" Leia or something along those lines. That should be enough to fool anyone so retarded that they'd actually make a stink about this outfit.

Dragasses 11-03-2015 09:24 AM

hilar.

You said it - people are SO touchy now. What better way to convey what a bad guy Jabba was than for him to do that?

This PC stuff is getting to be a little much, just because it's wrong doesn't mean it doesn't happen & in a fictional universe.

Skoob 11-03-2015 12:09 PM

I'm just relieved that she won't be wearing it in the new movie.

I agree: political correctness is a deliberate attempt to interfere with honest discourse.

Phantomcrow 11-03-2015 12:14 PM

"Indentured Servitude Princess Leia" or "Beach Party Princess Leia" I have seen the Beach Photos, Just make it that and call it good. People and Disney need to get off their high horse. She was a captured and ENSLAVED prisoner when Jabba caught her. We did not see it but look at the other slaves Jabba had, and the whole tounge thing, lets face it Jabba probably did some stuff off camera to all the women slaves he had. Leia chose the right opportunity to rise up against her captor and killed him, thus freeing her and the other women from slavery. She should be praised for her actions not condemned for being enslaved in the first place.

Nexodusrex 11-03-2015 01:17 PM

I'm sure Deviant Art will be still have plenty of slave leia art so long as the TPP fails to pass

Dr Kain 11-03-2015 01:45 PM

Good, maybe companies will make a Leia that would make sense being in my collection.

jestermon 11-03-2015 02:00 PM

If anything every version of this in figure form aren't fantastic, I think we would rather see a lady in the outfit than loosing the ability to have it with figure form.

I always though the slave name was hilarious if anything she made the worse slave ever she wasn't very obedient and then killed her master.

Lionheart 11-03-2015 02:17 PM

She wasn't called 'Slave Leia' back in the time of the O/T. That's a name that came about much later. The problem with objecting to the 'look' (or is it more the name?) in my opinion, is multiple;

1) It ignores the character Jabba is supposed to be - a scummy bad guy who doesn't care about anyone other than himself, and who likes to humiliate his victims.
2) It focuses on sex, while ignoring the class difference - he refers to her constantly as 'Princess'. It's clear that the class issue is more important to him than a sexual one (does he even like humans sexually?!) and he just wants to bring a royal down and humiliate them.
3) If Leia is being 'objectified' (which some claim she is). Then what the hell is happening to Han? He is *literally* an object hanging in Jabba's palace! Does anyone complain about that? No.

snake5289 11-03-2015 05:51 PM

*sigh*...This is all I have to say.

I swear people are such whiny bitches nowadays. What are they going to go and erase all the scenes with her in that outfit from the movie next? I'm sure walkie talkies will be involved somehow too.

Starscream99 11-03-2015 06:43 PM

I hate people....

I just hope they don't edit the film in a future release.

Dr Kain 11-03-2015 07:28 PM

My god, this is getting blown way out of proportion.

scarecrow 11-03-2015 07:56 PM

I love how people say "they" are going to erase her scenes in the outfit. You have George Lucas to blame for the revisions, not people who are trying to retire the Slave Leia look.

I think it would be obnoxious to change the movie, but who cares otherwise? Seriously.

What will people be missing out on if there isn't a Slave Leia figure or statue ever made again? Leia had tons of cool outfits, and there really isn't anything cool about Slave Leia. Sure, it's iconic in that sort of pulp way, but it isn't showing her in the most dignified light she's ever been in, and that's the point. For many people Slave Leia is a sexual object, and I do think that dilutes the character's power in some ways.

Leia being a prisoner was part of the plot and was interesting. Her being a prisoner in a bikini is total cheesecake. You can't deny it, and it's a person's own business what they do with that fact. For the guy making a comparison to Han as a point of "objectification", that argument might hold ground if Han was in a skimpy speedo or something.

Look people, I don't expect anyone to change their mind about this, but just think about it. I'm not a fan of revisionist history at all, but I can't stand the "the P.C. police are taking our rights" nonsense over action figures in bikinis possibly getting retired.

Brownfinger 11-03-2015 08:18 PM

What round table of PC Bros casually farted out this idea? There were two girls dressed as Slave Leia at a Halloween party I just went to, so someone must still like it.

I can see the point they wish to make with this move and the people they want to appease, but I feel that it's giving a little too much ground to misguided individuals. It's used in the narrative to make a point, and that is being missed entirely. I think, objectification aside because I have no control over what people do with that, there is something to be said for artistic integrity. It happened, it can't be forgotten. I wouldn't call the treatment entirely distasteful, and it highlighted Jabba as a monstrous individual. She did win in the end, and looked fabulous along the way.

If the problem is the name, then by all means, rebrand it. Leia is a Disney Princess now. But if this is some body-shaming thing, then it feels a bit like regression.

En Sabah Nerd 11-03-2015 08:35 PM

I remember the original toy of this costume was just called "Jabba's prisoner" and it sold amazingly well as I recall. I'm not sure how to feel about this whole ordeal, obviously the gold bikini was sex-appeal to begin with but I never went out of my way to get products of it. It's one of those things where I feel it's too late to complain about. If we're talking PC, anything concerning Leia's costume or title while wearing it is a moot point when we have real world issues concerning correctness (looking at you Washington Redskins).

VashTS 11-03-2015 08:35 PM

It's the SJW's aka Social Justice Warriors, feminists and the lovely liberals who push insanity.

Disney is just cow-tailing to those groups. Star Wars is not meant for the true fans anymore. Disney wants it more socially acceptable mainstream(Nerds are now in) and want mothers to push it onto their kids and Slave Leia is anti pg.

Notice no one makes fun of Star Wars nerds anymore.

I despise the aforementioned groups with a passion. Their agenda is what is being pushed in schools. When I have to teach, it is usually Liberal hogwash, which is part of the common core.

The point behind this (if it is true) isn't an attack on the film or the character, just the sexualization of it that is often found in the merchandise.

Anyways, what is the point in anyone getting upset over this? The 6" figure is still readily available. We have at least 6 3.75" figures of Leia in this outfit.

What defines a "true fan?" I always found the title condescending and odd. Like someone says "Mace Windu was cool" and someone else says "you're not a true fan." The OT is completely better though.

I'm from Texas and I'm absolutely in favor of liberals trying to reform education. We have textbooks that completely try to downplay slavery ("immigrant workers") or any other bad shit America ever did (handling the natives, the Chinese, the Japanese, Vietnam vets, etc.) and teachers don't get paid enough. Liberals usually come off as preachy wimps but conservatives still seem under the assumption that everybody's a Christian, they're all stupid in their own ways. Keep Church and State away from each other but also don't forcibly elevate minorities just to pretend the country has made progress.

Every time I see that term, it's right in the middle of a similarly venomous tirade.
If carrying such a label means I have to be contemptuous and scoff at new people sharing common hobbies and interests with me, I'm perfectly okay with not calling myself a "true" fan.

Human progress is agonizingly slow because no one is objective, and no one wants to help each other find the middle ground.

Panthro1978 11-04-2015 12:24 AM

Maybe now they'll give me the decent Black Series 6" Leia that I am craving.

Note to self - see if you can buy a few Slave Leia figures to flog on eBay for ridiculous amounts now... :D

Holy shit! I forgot how over-sized they made the staff. The unleashed figures were pretty cool, although I didn't like how the second Vader they did had his cape all flowing and action-y.
