MAFEX 1st Order Stormtrooper
|
This figure looks just as good as Figuarts, with more gear, for less money.
For the price that they charge, you would think that Figuarts could likewise include some extra gear with their trooper figure. Want the riot baton? Oh no, you've got to buy a whole new figure for that! Want the heavy blaster cannon? Oh no, you've got to buy another separate figure for that. Want a squad leader shoulder pauldron? That's another separate figure. What's that? You want to know our markup? Oh, it's only about 900 percent... |

Yeah I shouldn't have paid for the riot SHF already. Oh well.

Hey everyone. I'm new here this is my first post, and its gonna be a question. I have no Black Series or any high-end Star Wars action figures, but after seeing the amazing film, I want to get at least one, and its gonna be the badarse Stormtrooper with the riot gear that appeared in the film breifly. So... which version shoul I go for? I'm definitely not doing the Black Series one because its only in a 2 pack and doesn't have enough articulation. So it's basically between the S.H. Figuarts one and this one. I don't have enough cash for the Hot Toys one as of now. So between this MAFEX one and the one from Figuarts, which would you recommend? I'm leaning towards this one TBH.

Grype provides a good comparison of the different brands in his recent review of the classic stormtrooper.
IMO, the main feature distinguishing Figuarts is the slightly smaller scale. Mafex and Black Series are same scale. Figuarts rules the roost with respect to articulation and detail, which is why I'm very excited for their version of young Han Solo in particular. Mafex plastic isn't quite as good (brittle, less pliable), and they've had problems in the past with loose joints, but many here seem to agree that they're best overall for screen accuracy. Figuarts and Mafex both blow Black Series out of the water, especially the recent Force Awakens figures by Black Series. |

Black series may be the weakest of the three generally speaking but they're also cheap enough that I can't complain (except when they ditched troopers having double-hinged elbows ). |
Absolutely, I'm happy with my Black Series stuff from the initial waves. Most of the figures were well done, and good value. I'm hoping that we see more good offerings, with the movie pressure off. (It'll be interesting to see how well Hasbro can pull off the fine details of Ahsoka's facial markings.)
The fact that Classic Stormtrooper came first in the Star Wars series from Figuarts is reflected in the variety of quibbles. Reasonably, we can expect improvement with upcoming releases. I'm excited for the riot trooper, though I wish he came with a blaster, like this Mafex version. (Wonder if these companies ever considered selling packaged accessories separately online.) |
