What to do about toys when a movie sucks?

Batman v. Superman is supposedly rotten but I still want the Mafex figures because they look good. It's kind of a lot of money to spend on figures for a movie that sucks though. Especially when there's so much great stuff out there.

I dunno. Should it really matter?

snake5289 03-23-2016 10:49 AM

No buy what you like. The figures would still be great regardless of the movie's quality.

And unless you've already seen the movie and think it sucks who gives a shit what someone else thinks. A lot of people didn't like Man of Steel but I loved it.

Black Arbor 03-23-2016 10:52 AM

Also, if the movie stinks on ice there's a good chance the toys will be clearanced out if you're willing to wait a few months:D

En Sabah Nerd 03-23-2016 11:05 AM

AVP was a shit movie but the NECA toys of those characters are really cool. A toy can be more enjoyable than its source material.

snake5289 03-23-2016 11:11 AM

^^ Perfect example right there.

Startaiger 03-23-2016 11:13 AM

Star Wars PT was not good, doesn't stop the toys for still being produced.
And no matter if BvS sucks, I still want that Mafex WW.

warmachine6 03-23-2016 11:15 AM

I intend to grab mafex superman , and maybe wonder woman i like the outfits
or the figure.
Even if i think a movie is good doesnt mean i shall get said figures... oh well i kinda did with guardians of the galaxy... but still wanted nova ,only didnt want the GOTG cause didnt really know who they were...
also passed on some movie MLs i didnt like i.e MK 42 armour i passed on that IM3 wave simply due to the horrid colour scheme only figure i got was ultron.

Though this is video link sums it up nicely

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SB_oU68Q9zA

hopefully your able to view in your region [source is rick and morty, good animation show]

Yeah me too. If nothing else we get a killer realistic Wonder Woman out of all this.

Il Cattivo 03-23-2016 12:30 PM

i have ang lee hulk figures and I hate that damn movie with a passion

snake5289 03-23-2016 12:36 PM

Yeah crappy movie but it gave us some pretty sweet Hulk toys.

I'm going to see Dawn of Justice tomorrow night and as long as the Batman and Superman stuff is good I'll be happy. All the stuff thrown in because Justice League is just extra. Looking forward to what they have planned in the future for Batfleck. The rumors I've heard about the solo movie dealing with Red Hood has me pretty excited.

Dr Kain 03-23-2016 04:49 PM

Sell them off. I have no room in my collection for toys from a property that sucks ass.

Not even when said toys are great and transcend being tied to their crap origins?

Did that with transformer movie shit. A few times. I don't think I even have any now.

Skoob 03-23-2016 08:39 PM

We've all made mistakes, spending good money on duds, either because the item is poor or looking at it dredges up negative memories and associations or because reality falls short of expectations.

My greatest weakness is HYPE. Impulse buying is my greatest source of regret. Reselling helps to some extent (recover some money and make somebody else happy). My best collector decisions have always involved patience. Self-restraint always works well for me.

Force Awakens is a disappointment IMO - not compost-rotten like the Prequel Trilogy, but I bet the collectors who forked over hundreds and even thousands of dollars in order to be the first owner of a Phasma or First Order Trooper feel pretty stupid now. The characters weren't particularly important, and the designs aren't particularly memorable in and of themselves. My choice to purchase an armored Batman figure prior to viewing Batman vs. Superman has to do with the interesting design, not whether the movie stinks. I don't care for Henry Cavill as Superman and don't like his costume generally, but if I like him in the movie, I can try to buy his figure later if my feelings change and the figure is still available and priced reasonably and reviews show it to be well done.

I'm thrilled with my new Jango Fett, his sordid origins notwithstanding. Snake5289 makes the point succinctly: "Buy what you like!"

If you like the costume designs and the toys deliver what you want (sculpt, articulation, etc.) then you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

The only reviewers that are really railing the movie are the professional journalists. The Youtube reviewers all seem to be saying that it's good but with a few problems. Basically, if you liked Man of Steel then you'll like Batman v Superman.

Nope. I had gotten rid of all of my Bayformers and GI Joe movie figures after seeing their awful movies. Actually, I didn't even bother buying any of the GI Joe 2 movie figures because of how bad the first one was (although, I do believe someone bought a CC for me). As for Bayformers, I liked the first one, but after watching the third I just had to get rid of everything that was related to that universe.

It's also why I never bought a single Man of Steel item and will not touch any of the BvsS ones.

Trivial Psychic 03-23-2016 10:03 PM

In the end...I say just buy what you like, regardless of whether or not the media is any good. I despise the Transformers movies, yet I snagged up every single Dinobot I could find simply because I liked the designs and how they turned out. That movie though..well...calling it garbage is really being nice about it.

En Sabah's example with AVP was another good example, or an even better one would be NECA's recent figures from Terminator Genisys. That movie was 90 minutes of utter stupidity and confusion, and would have been more honestly titled: Terminator: Monkeys Wrote The Script. However the figures that came out of that line (especially the Byun Hyun Kim T-1000) were all excellent, despite the horrible property that they came out of.

Besides, once a figure is yours...it's yours to do whatever you like with it. Sure it has it's own stigma of the film that came before it, but once that figure is yours, would you rather just re-enact scenes from the movie...or play out your own adventures?

Emikd 03-24-2016 06:04 AM

IMO my first Hot Toys Figure was Babydoll from Sucker Punch.
Movie is utter crap, but that's a great Hot Toys figure that started my Hot Toys collection.

To chime in on BvS, I have the Mattel main 3 from the movie master line, and i have a few from their basic line. The movie will be what it is, but the armored Bat Man figure is a pretty cool figure and I have zero regrets about pre-ordering the Mafex version as well. It's a cool design for a cool character. Buy what you want, whatever you like. I have zero intention of finishing the C&C for that line but I'm happy I got the core 3. Even though the basic Wonder Woman is a better sculpt than their movie master sculpt in my humble opinion. I'll try to post up pictures tonight.

suchaname 05-15-2016 10:41 AM

I buy the toys if they look cool, though I'd have to question myself with the likes of BvS, for instance.

I wasn't keen on Predator: Fire and Stone (they freely admitted they hadn't planned much at all), but the Ahab figure's great. And knowing NECA, they'll probably be able to sell me this POS
http://www.previewsworld.com/catalog.../STK657459.jpg

And I imagine I'll be shelling out for updated AvP:R figs even though that movie was a steaming turd.

snake5289 05-15-2016 01:23 PM

Agreed. The second I get the chance I'll be getting the updated Wolf when he releases. Would be nice to get an updated Predalien too.

I really hope they don't just give us another of the AVP:R predalien because that thing was a bit of a mess and when you look at the whole suit it has very wonky proportions. Of course NECA could take artistic privilege and tweak the design the same way they just made the AVP predators thinner than they actually were. My ideal predalien figure would be based on its design from AVP 2010 or the creature's debut appearance from the comics but then again there's not really that great of a look at it in said comic.

That thing looks like a sarlaac, a chud and a yajuuta all had a drunken threeway and that was the result.
Avp r was better than avp ( especially when that stupid screaming blonde got skewered into the wall ) but the damn cinematography was so poor you have to watch it in pitch black abd even then its barely visible.

While neither was good I also kinda prefer AVP:R over AVP. First off AVP:R was actually rated R and when you're in a franchise that has always been rated R it sucks some of the joy out of things to get a bunch of PG-13 kills. Secondly Wolf was one badass predator and he looked a lot better than those tanks in AVP. In AVP's defense it clearly is the more polished movie and had more money backing it as the cinematography was cleaner and the effects were stronger. It also had Lance Henriksen which was cool, even though the humans sucked in both I guess I'd have to say AVP handled them better. The original comics still get to reign supreme as the true AVP and the games delivered.

suchaname 05-15-2016 02:33 PM

AvP:R, for me, felt like someone had asked the internet what it wanted to see from two horror icons... and the internet had drunken way too much caffeine at that moment.

I'm not one of those who had to have it first but i do have a small yet growing collection of Phasma figures. I really like the design and at the end of the day-even though her appearance was forgettable-i have a collection of cool looking figures on my shelf. A cool design is still a cool design and the decision to buy a figure shouldn't hinge on the character's status. Doing so, imo, is kind of speculator-ish.

At the other end of the spectrum, the few times I've felt like I've gotten burned on buying figures is when I'm a big fan of the property and buy the figures even though I may not actually like the figure itself.
