Damn. I was hoping it'd be the classic image of him opening his suit to reveal the S logo.

Yah, that's my reaction as well. Guess this version is based on some kind of Elseworlds one-shot or alternative universe that we never followed.

I'm a bit behind but if I'm not mistaken it's from a recent arc in the New 52 series.

It's from a recent New52 story where Vandal Savage stole Superman's power.
Something that accompanied the launch of the "Legends of Tomorrow" TV show.

Superman had eventually gotten his powers back by using kryptonite (yep, it's one of THOSE stories..) which poisoned him as well as provided him with new powers.
Everything led to this version of superman (New52) dying and being replaced by the pre-new52 superman.
