Questions about Starting to Collect

Ok, so first I would like to say sorry if this isn't in the right place to post this, I'm new to this forum.

Anyway, as the title states I'm starting to collect action figures. The problem is I don't know where to start. I was thinking about getting my 2 favorite DC characters (Harley and The Flash), but then I thought that they wouldn't really go together and that I should get the trinity, Batman, Superman, and Wonderwoman. I also don't know which figure to get since their are many different figures of each character.

So my question is what figures should I start with? My favorites, or the classics, and which specific figure.

Welcome to the Ark!

Between the choice of favorites and classics I always go with favorites first. If you don't really want a figure don't get it. If you want a Harley Quinn figure it doesn't oblige you to also get Joker or Batman if you don't also want them. DC Icons, a line from DC Collectibles, has made both Flash and Harley Quinn and I believe they're both still easy to get. It also depends on what kind of figures you want. Regarding these characters if you prefer looks over functionality you'd probably want to steer more towards DC Collectibles or other similar collector-oriented lines, these lines will of course often have functionality but typically their look is where more of the resources went. If you prefer functionality/playability over looks I'm honestly not sure I should recommend Mattel because their current offerings aren't even very well articulated and going back for older worthwhile figures can prove expensive. So yeah for Flash and Harley Quinn I'd recommend looking at the DC Icons figures.

First off welcome to the boards I personally collect characters i love like flash also.I would collect the characters you like first if you like Flash and Harley Quinn the best figures of them are The Dc universe and Dc collectibles Icons. Depending if you like the Flash tv series or not but Dc collectibles made an Excellent figure of and he is not expensive at all hope this helps somewhat

Welcome. Prepare to never have any money, ever again!

Man, I got back into collecting again after not buying anything for over a decade. I just got lost in other things for a while and eventually lost interest in all of that and rediscovered action figures. At the end of the day it's going to reduce you down to your core interests after you discover your money only goes so far (unless you're Richie Rich).

You have favorite characters, that's an awesome start. Check out your local comic shops, collectible store, or big box retailer. Before you find the limit you're willing to reach whether it be your wallet or your time (believe in the hunt over just resorting to eBay), you'll know what you want right away.

There are superior toy brands, usually import brands will do justice in putting out truly awesome figures, but that doesn't mean you won't be drawn to bendy wire dashboard novelties. Keep an open mind.

If you want to acclimate yourself to specific brands or a line of figures there are plenty of toy reviewers putting in the footwork for you so search them out. Familiarize yourself to what you may or may not want to put down some serious coin on if it's a hard to get item (this is specifically referencing buying complete sets of figures all at once to ensure you get a figure you really want).

But take a moment out of your day and just pop in to one of your local stores to get an idea of what's at your disposal. Figure collecting is a pretty common hobby with a wide age gap of collectors so don't let anyone deter you from walking down that aisle at the store...you're there for the same thing anyway.

For me personally.. I've been avoiding main line figures found at big box stores.. Over time I just become more and more dissatisfied by them. I much prefer quality over quantity.

These days I only really collect 1/6 figures, masterpiece transformers, and figuarts/mafex figures here and there.

I tend to stick to three lines now - Lego, minimates and Star Wars. I pick up the odd Hot Toy but my days of randomly buying any old Transformer for the collection have gone.

Finances are hard right now, but it still costs me a fortune!

Thanks! I'll check out my local comic book shop and look at some toy reviews to see what sets I would like. One set I've been eyeing is the new Marvel Legends X-Men wave.
