Never knew Strange was a wee freckle-faced Irish laddie. I hope NECA, DCC, and McFarlane don't start doing the computer faces. Terrible rubbish, in my opinion.

I think everyone will move to it eventually. It is (or will be) cheaper, and when done right, more consistent. Right now, super close doesn't look too hot, but from like half arms' length back it's indistinguishable. As they get smaller printing heads in the mix, it will be better even at close range.

That's my personal opinion, I know some folks are not feeling it. I would prefer a well done large run laser print to a large run hand painted style. When both are at their best, the laser wins IMO.

SpasticPlastic 08-19-2017 03:18 PM

To me it just looks too soft and blurry. Especially around the eyes. Maybe the best way would be a combination of the 2. Base with the laser and fine tune with brush.

snake5289 08-19-2017 03:23 PM

Looks awesome except for the close-up of the face. *yeesh* Could be worse though I guess.

Captain Taiga 08-19-2017 03:49 PM

Wait which Dr. Strange is this? How come the cloak looks symmetrical now?

syambo87 08-19-2017 11:34 PM

i dont remember Dr. Strange being in any kind of fire in the movie.. its still a very useful practical effect for action figures... Esp. Ghost Rider... muahahahaha

I feel like the fact that it's mentioned every time that face printing looks awesome when you have the figure in hand, but people complain every time just the same.

You never look at your toys on the shelf 2 inches away blown up the size of your computer/tablet screen. From a normal viewing distance they look amazing.

Yeah, I am not quite sure how to handle this with the photography long term. I've always wanted to get in close and show these guys off so they are larger than life, but in this situation, it triggers in my opinion unnecessary reactions.

There are issues with the laser printing, and not every figure, or application on a single figure, is great. But that's just like paint was.

In 99% of the cases you will look at this fig, it will look like this:

http://www.toyark.com/attachment.php...1&d=1503246065

Where, on my 1920 calibrated monitor, you can't see the dots, and looks great IMO. If you pinch to zoom in, maybe a bit.

So yeah, I dunno exactly what to do here.

I agree with both of SpasticPlastic's posts 100%. The digital painting looks like shit...it's grainy, blurry, indistinct and completely lacks crispness and definition. It's like watching a movie in SD instead of HD.

Plus, on the MCU Legends figures I've seen it on so far the QC issues are easily doubled when compared to hand-painted work. I came across the Thor Ragnarok and Netflix Legends waves at TRU and most of them had misaligned or straight-up smudged apps. Not a fan.

Maybe it's because people don't agree with you when they have the figure in-hand. I sure don't.

You're showing pics in a review. If you don't want "unnecessary reactions" maybe just post text-only reviews, then?

The fact remains that the digital painting doesn't stand up under close inspection like the hand-painted process does. That's a valid criticism, especially for those of us who like to our photograph figures as well.

That pic looks lower-res overall than it you were holding it in-hand. Also, in that shot the eyes still look soft.

Dolemite 08-21-2017 07:14 AM

Also, credit where credit is due: This pic is AWESOME. Nice job on the review overall, dude.

Just sport arguing here, but when I said "unnecessary reactions" I meant that the average, casual, IMO majority of collectors - will never see the dots because they don't hold close and inspect. All they care about it how it looks on a shelf at a distance. When I take the pics the way I do, it amplifies any issues. So it triggers immediate discussion on the new technology since it is weird at the macro level.

Whatever the reaction are, I'm ok with. I just don't want to trigger them unnecessarily, which is what I was pondering out loud about.

If this face paint style is really undesired and regularly poorly executed, the fans will speak with their wallets and it will improve or go bye bye soon enough.

Personally, every one I've had has been executed without misalignment or errors, and better than the equivalent paint job. At arms length.

Nothing will beat the painters on Hot Toys, and Oldboy CTTS style stuff, but we weren't getting that on Hasbro and Tamashii figs.

As for doing text only reviews - haha no way, I barely write anything now. If I remove the pics it will be shorter than this post. I like to let the pics speak for themselves. If I could just post up 100 pics and say LOOK HERE PURDY PICS I would.

Dolemite 08-21-2017 07:49 PM

Actually, I was just kidding about the text-only reviews. :)
