your favorite Superman figure

Got back into comic books recently ...and now searching for action figures to "inspire me".

I've seen several Superman figures...some good, many, many, many not so good. Near as I can tell sculpting a decent Superman head is nigh impossible. :)

Can you point me to your favorite Superman figure(s)? Maybe I'll spot one I haven't seen...then of course assuming I like it, finding it will be the next challenge.

SpasticPlastic 02-11-2018 05:38 PM

My 3 favourites are the NECA Christopher Reeve, DC Direct Last Son Superman based off Adam Kubert's design and DC Direct Superman/ Batman Series 7 based off of Shane Davis' art. In that order. The Kubert is a bit too blocky and the Davis has a head sculpt that is just a slightly bit off, but they are my favourites in terms of sculpt, design, and overall appearance.

deecee4 02-11-2018 06:07 PM

My favorites are the Ed McGuinness Superman from the Public Enemies line and the Superman from the JLA line (the one that came with an American flag). And if Neca ever gets to release that Superman/Alien pack, that will probably be my favorite Superman figure....we'll know the status of that figure in a couple of days time I think.

capmarvel 02-11-2018 06:40 PM

I did find the Superman "Through the Ages" 4 piece box set for about $50 and that coming in a few days...I mainly got it for the "Hush" Superman but hoping I also like the "Man of Steel" on in person.

Interesting thing is evidently they had 2 versions of this box - some boxes I've seen online have lighter paint jobs than the box I'm getting.

Sadly, I don't have one because no one has done a Superman properly. There hasn't beena single one that has had top notch articulation while looking exactly like he does in the comics. Icons came close, but screwed the pooch with his colors, the gaps in the hips, the horrible head sculpt, and the lack of being able to position his neck in a flying pose. Mattel almost had one, but he had no S on the cape, the neck could not go into a flying pose, no alternate hands, and outdated articulation.

snake5289 02-11-2018 07:12 PM

Injustice Superman after I gave him a new paintjob, a Thor cape, and a MoS head. Only problem is that they're pretty pricey these days.

jwyss234 02-11-2018 07:17 PM

Unlike Batman, I can't say that there are any "must have" Superman figures. The DC Icons Man of Steel Superman and the 7" Neca Reeve Superman are my go to figures. I have a couple more but they're not really worth mentioning by name. Unfortunately the head sculpt on the Icons isn't that great and I'm afraid of touching the Neca figure since several reviewers mentioned that their figures broke almost immediately.

I'm hoping for the best with the DC Essentials Rebirth Superman. While the proportions may be a bit off, he looks well articulated and I really like the shades of red and blue that DCC chose for him. If that figure doesn't pan out, then I'll look toward Mezco and Bandai. Or perhaps Mattel will join the 21st century and release figures that are on par with Marvel Legends.

Ever thought of doing some Kitbashing? I've seen some good ones.

As for the topic at hand, I'm dedicated to 3 3/4 inch for the most part, so mine would be somewhere inbetween the DC Multiverse Christopher Reeve Superman and the DCIH Public enemies Superman. Both are a bit harder to get, though.

If you're looking for 6 inch, though, this is my personal favorite Kitbash.

The New 52 Superman is unquestionably my favorite Superman design, and my favorite Superman figure is the DC Collectibles Superman from the New 52 7 pack Justice League set. I bought that set when it was released specifically for that Superman (non smirk). It has remained on display ever since.

My second favorite Superman is the DCUC Dark Knight Returns Superman (I just really love that comic/movie). Second and third are nearly tied.

And my third favorite would be the DCUC New 52 Superman

I like the DCUC New 52 Superman lot too.

Nope because I can't customize figures for jackshit. My paint jobs always look horrendous no matter what types of paint I use (with lots of brush strokes showing), lines are never straight, and I'm not good at drilling and stuff.

I actually have the metallic version of the New 52 Superman...it's the first figure I bought about a month ago when I got interested again. I really "love it". Great head sculpt for once, and perfectly per proportioned body (also rare). However, reading more of my older Superman comics, I wanted one in the "classic costume" (which is coming back evidently). I also have the metallic Batman and Flash. Great head sculpt for once, and perfectly per proportioned body (also rare).

Interestingly, my twin girls are 11 and when I got the New 52 Superman they commented "he's nice but doesn't look right". We get "programmed" to how something should be whether it makes sense or not.

TyranasauROSS 02-12-2018 08:25 AM

The DCUC style New 52 Superman is the only 6 Inch Superman I have held onto. I do like him alot. I'm holding out hope that DC Essentials might be decent and we get a nice Superman from them. Otherwise I will have to keep waiting for Mattel or another company to finally do right by Supes. I fear that might be a while....

The headsculpts of Superman from Mattel usually rub me the wrong way. Especially the derpy looking face of the classic Superman they've rereleased a few times(DCUC, Superpowers, Superfriends).

My favorite Superman figure is either the Kenner Superpowers figure from the 80s or NECA's 7" Reeve Superman.

capmarvel 02-13-2018 03:27 PM

Why do I get the impression that the companies do not want to make a "perfect" figure? If they do, many not purchase the next figure etc....so let's keep making figures with great bodies and dopey heads or disproportional bodies with nice heads...but (almost) never nice bodies with nice heads.

SpasticPlastic 02-13-2018 03:44 PM

For a long time DC Direct thought that the Jim Lee "Hush" Batman was the perfect Batman figure, so they reissued it a bunch of times with slightly different paint schemes. And it sold every time, so I'm not sure that's what's on their minds. At least not in DC Direct or DC Collectibles' case. As for Mattel, well, they just suck, so…

I think it's probably just harder to make the ultimate figure that everyone is 100% happy with. If the face and body are perfect, someone would complain about articulation. If those 3 are perfect, someone would complain about accessories or something else. You really can't win with rabid nerds. And, I say this as one. Also, needless to say, everyone's opinions and tastes are different. Plus, dealing with comic book characters is tougher, I'd imagine, than doing movie or TV show figures, because which version do you do? Based off what artist? From what era? So, rambling aside, I think there can only be a "perfect" figure in the eyes of a single, solitary collector.

I bet I could ask 100 Superman fans which "blue" is the correct "Superman blue" and I'll get 100 different answers....maybe 200!

They did! However, that Superman I posted is essentially a "do-over" version of the original KC Supes they made, which is mind bogglingly ugly, and while the accompanying Bats they made was a little better, he never got a do-over figure himself haha.
