Need Advice : Thinking of changing my focus to GI Joe
Hello Arkers!
So I'm looking at possibly getting out of the marvel legends game as my main line and getting in to the Joe game. I like to focus my collection on one line, and supplement with a few other little pieces I like here and there. Anyone have any tips or advice? I like the idea of collecting something that doesn't currently have a regular release schedule as well as the smaller scale Marvel legends had like 10 waves this year alone and I just dont want to keep up. Thoughts? Tips? Advice? |
I like dead lines as well- makes it that much easier to complete things without needing to worry about keeping up with new product. Joe is a pretty vast line-up though, so even though there may not be anything new at the moment- there is a ton of stuff out there. I would say start by picking a line (modern/vintage/Sigma/etc.etc.) and just buy the core characters and see how you feel (Duke, Snake-Eyes, Scarlett, Cobra Commander, etc etc etc...) Those main figures also have tons of options so you can pick at least one of any given style up pretty cheap... Once you see if it's for you start branching out either by year or sub-group and you'll have a nice collection in no time... good-luck!... or... Yo Joe!

gi joe is a holy grail line. definitely a line that is fun to focus on. i collect gi joe myself.
if they made gi joe in 6 inch, it would destroy marvel legends |
I agree with Bo Ttef about picking a line and then focusing on the core characters like Duke and Snake Eyes to see how you feel about it. If you have any collectible shops or comic book stores that sell used toys, check them out for used Joes. Part of what got me into GI Joe was picking up a 25th Anniversary TS Duke on a whim. I liked the figure well enough so I started checking more LCSs and came across a store that had pegs of 25th Anniversary figures for around $5 each. I made off like a bandit with cared figures of a lot of the core characters.
I would also recommend the following sites: Generals Joes – A blog about the importance (or unimportance) of little plastic men https://www.yojoe.com Generals Joes has a lot of reviews and Yo Joe has a database of all figures and vehicles. |
I have a few Joes on my http://www.toyark.com/marvel-g-i-joe...58/#post756548 list. Anything you want to trade for just PM me.

3.75" 25th/Resolute/ROC/POC/Renegades/30th/50th Joes are and will always be my top priority. But recently I went to a local toy show and not a single vendor had any Joes for sale... it was so sad. I think finding certain (imo) essential figures like Resolute Scarlett or 5 pack Lady Jaye will be hard now.
I also collected X-men MU too. And I also decided to cut back on my Legends by only buying 90's X-men now... no more MCU Legends for me. |
I would rather focus on a current higher end line that doesn’t have a ton of releases throughout the year.
Figuarts.. mafex.. hot toys.. masterpiece transformers.. etc. |
I'd be careful if you're into a wide array of characters, some of the figures are ridiculously expensive on the after market and it's only worse where they don't have new stuff to keep them occupied. The subscription service figures are a nightmare too.

GI Joes can be a relatively inexpensive thing to start collecting if you focus on some of the classics, as they can practically be found anywhere. Many GI Joes also reused accessories so they can be pretty easy to match up if you can't find the original identical weapon. In addition, Joe's are not hard to take apart or fix, so even if you come across partial Joe fodder, they can be easily restored to their original state if you're patient.
Prepare for disappointment though as well. Vehicles are often difficult to find in pristine condition with all of their weapons and accessories, and there are several that will run you thousands of dollars if you can even find them. Holy grails like the Terrordrome, The Flagg, and the Defiant are highly sought after pieces that are often incomplete or in various stages of disrepair, and if you are able to find them in good shape, will force you to take out a second morgage on your home. |
I have some Joe's and vehicles in varied condition. I like to repair them over time. I don't collect them though. I'm into Marvel Legends.

Well if you do decide to go with Joe, send me a PM as I’m thinning out my Joe collection to just my favorites/sentimental ties. All else is up for trade or sale but seeing as I’m getting into marvel legends late in the game we could work out a trade or two. |
Crazy thing is, even the newer versions of vehicles are expensive!
But, I took the plunge anyway lol Quote:
