don't they already make marvel dolls called marvel legends? we need more action figures *cough*3.75*cough* hasbro.

You would think after the monumental failures of Mattel’s WWE Superstars and DC Superhero Girls they would know better than to do something like this.

DC Superhero Girls has been lauded as a huge success, though. The tv series was one of DCs most popular, the first comic trade sold 100k copies, and the only people who say the toys didn't sell as far as I know are adult male fans who are the single worst people to judge the success of a childrens toyline imaginable.

A better comparison would be Star Wars Forces of Destiny which has been badly handled from the beginning. But even then he logic doesn't follow, there are dozens of successful girls toylines, why should the failure of one or two put companies off making more?

and you probably would not believe how long I watched those figures peg warm at Family Dollar either.

Just given the current economic climate and Mattel's generally spotty history, I have a hard time believing they'd be continuing the franchise to such a degree if it were really some kind of colossal failure.

They even have a TV show coming out.

I just wish they'd have made 3.75" figures for this, even not very poseable ones, similar to the Disney movie figs we get. There's at least 4 characters here I've wanted for ages(though I made my own America Chavez I need to repaint her and have been super lazy). I desperately want a proper in scale Kamala and Gwen, though the ML Kamala mostly works since she tends to be about that relative size in combat.

the DC barbie line is actually very popular. It's one of the few toylines I see kids walking around with. I think the "overstock" is just due to proper stocking of the toyline. I've seen a Walmart at stocking time with a pallet of just the DC dolls. 24 cases. Takes a while, I'm sure, to go through that!

Meanwhile Transformers get a single case, and Marvel Legends gets two cases.

My wife bought a bunch of them last week (go go Target toy sale) and lemme tell you, these are pretty damn fantastic. They're modeled on the same base idea as Forces of Destiny (IE they're an 'action doll' line, rather than a 'fashion doll' line), but have more in the way of cloth clothing as opposed to molded-on pieces.

What's impressive is that each of the dolls has a unique body type, further moving away from the fashion doll feel. Dolls of the same character can still share clothes/accessories, of course, but you can't give Squirrel Girl (who has a much thicker build overall, especially in the hips/legs and shoulders) most of Ghost Spider's clothes (her frame is taller and more slender). Which is amazing, because aside from the more recent Barbie offerings, dolls lines didn't have a lot of variation between the dolls as far as body types, for the sake of being able to swap clothes and accessories. Which is great for people who want to get characters they identify with more.

One thing I'm very impressed with is the articulation on these. Head joints are quite tight (a major problem for the Mattel lines - Monster High, Ever After High, and DC Superhero Girls - is that the neck joint can end up being very loose, even right out of the package). Shoulders, elbows, wrists, and hips are all the standard hinge-swivel combo we see in Marvel Legends, mid-thigh swivels, and double-jointed knees (I'm not at home to double-check whether Patriot has single- or double-jointed elbows).

Going back to the clothing and accessories, there's a few shortcuts here and there, but overall they put a lot of work into these. Certain characters (Patriot, Ghost Spider) have full single-piece bodysuits, and others (Squirrel Girl, Ms. America) have painted-on stockings/tights/leggings. Quake was surprising in how her entire outfit is made up of individual pieces, when they could have skimped and given her a body suit (which they did in her alternate 'Secret Identity' release, which includes a civilian outfit and her super-suit). Almost all of the dolls have unique character accessories/effects, including a webline and removable mask for Ghost Spider (the mask is absent in her 'Secret Identity' release), a 'shockwave' energy effect for Quake, Patriot's shield, a 'star punch' effect for Ms. America, an alternate 'embiggened' hand for Ms. Marvel, and Tippy-Toe for Squirrel Girl.

All in all, this line is turning out to be a lot of fun, and I do hope it continues on with more releases - the packaging promises at least a Captain Marvel, and Inferno is already in the 'budget' line (lower articulation and more simple outfits). On top of that, characters like Exile, Mary-Jane, Hala the Accuser, and Ironheart are slated to appear in the Marvel Rising series, hopefully putting them on the list for possible inclusion down the line. Either way, as someone who is not the target audience, I have to say it's pretty damn good, and I'm glad the target audience has a line like this.

Possible for later if the show really takes off and so does the current toy offerings. Right now they have to cater to the market to get it established.

If the line does well, and the show continues to do well, it'll likely grow in having everyone covered it can. Season 2+ looks like it may potentially increase the cameos too for more toy offerings.

Which is a metric of a hot seller outright. So here's hoping this line does as well. Because the better the lines and exposure does, the better the material we'll get as the market share increases.

They just came out, like, literally in the past two weeks. And half the local Targets have sold most of their stock.

DC Superhero Girls has been doing exceedingly well too.

And I'm honestly not surprised this is doing well. I can't think of a single girls line hasbro has made in the past 20 years that's done poorly.

Here’s hoping for Marvel Legends of these character. I really want another Spider-Gwen figure and a Squirrel Girl figure. Crossing my fingers.

There's a Legends Spider-Gwen being re-released as a Target exclusive set with Miles Morales. It's based on the upcoming Into the Spider-verse film so the paint job's a bit different, but nothing too crazy. Keep an eye out, it's starting to pop-up around at stores now.

As for Squirrel Girl, I'm crossing my fingers, too.

I’ve seen that. I took a good look at it and it really just looks like the original with different paint apps on the shoes. I really do want a short-haired Gwen, and getting the same head on the one just released doesn’t seem like much of an investment to me unfortunately.

It's crazy there hasn't been a Squirrel Girl figure in Legends yet.
