Action Figure paint causes cancer?

Dont mean to be a debbie downer cause im always color tweaking my figs but i noticed some labels on acrylic paint that we use for figures and it says "cancer and reproductive harm" ?

* How serious is this? i never even noticed it till now.
* Some paints say the warning, some dont?

or am i overthinking it?

TheBlueMarvel 02-21-2019 05:14 PM

If the warning is there, then the risk is real, but I imagine you’d have to bathe in it to be seriously worried. As for the paints that don’t list it, the reasons could range from loose regulation to no dangerous chemicals were used in its manufacture. I don’t paint at all (intend to start soon), but I plan to be careful not to leave paint on my fingers for extended periods. Not sure how helpful that is…

En Sabah Nerd 02-21-2019 05:17 PM

I'm not entirely up-to-date on the possible hazards of paint but I'd have to guess the warning probably refers to inhalation or consumption dangers.

TheBlueMarvel 02-21-2019 05:19 PM

That makes more sense...

Tomax 02-21-2019 05:24 PM

Thanks guys for the info. you calmed me down alittle lol... i wash with soap the paint from my fingers the moment i am done. and i dont usually take long when im repainting a figure.

SideNote:: and its probably a good idea NOT to eat while you are painting a figure, just thought ill throw that out there.

TheBlueMarvel 02-21-2019 05:27 PM

Air-circulation via an open window and lava soap FTW lol

Tomax 02-21-2019 05:32 PM

^^^ good one Blue marvel

LordMudd 02-21-2019 05:55 PM

I use only water based paint now, so probably not much cause for concern.

CCC.

Tomax 02-21-2019 06:05 PM

^^^ yes, most of acrylic paints is water based

And here I am, using condoms like a sucker!
Pretty sure many of us are dads (or about to be!), so that's one we can cross off.

Hey, yeah! Some of my collection smells a little like a new car. Could that be a bad thing?

New Car Smell Is Toxic, Study Says: Which Cars Are Worst? (CBS, 2012)
Quote:

For the study, researchers at the Ecology Center tested more than 200 of the most popular 2011-2012 automobiles for chemicals that "off-gas" from interior car parts such as the steering wheel, dashboard, armrests, and seats. They assigned a "vehicle rating" based on the amount of chemicals they found.

The researchers found more than 275 different chemicals in the interiors of cars. Some chemicals of concern include bromine from brominated flame retardants (BFRs) which are added to plastics to make them less flammable, chlorine used for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) used for plastics and windshields, lead, and heavy metals.

The researchers said BFR exposure has been tied to thyroid problems, learning and memory impairment, decreased fertility, and behavioral changes while PVCs which contain chemicals called phthalates are linked to decreased fertility, and problems with the liver, testes, thyroid, ovaries, kidneys, and blood.

^^^

TRUTH...this is REAL SHIT...that no one knows about!!!!!!!
a buddy of mine had Cancer...and the dr. was telling him about things to avoid.. he 100% told him..never get in cars immediately on a hot day.. roll the windows down and let the car air out a bit. Said the things used in the production of the interiors of some cars contain carcinogens....smh.. we are DOOMED!!!

no seriously...we are

The state of CA has some very unique laws that paint manufacturers must follow. Side nore if you have ceramic plates/dishes with a chip, throw them out. Coffee mugs especially those with paints on them should never get washed in the dishwasher. This was told to me by a rep at ceramic manufacturer.

The toxicity comes from the pigments, not all pigments are toxic but some like cadmium are. The exposure would come from eating the paint, or sanding it and breathing in the paint dust (or airbrushing without a mask). Some pigments that are listed as toxic are only irritants, but others are more harmful…however, unless your consistently sanding or eating paint, you shouldn't have any worries.

The real concern, like some have mentioned, are the chemicals that make the plastics, not so much the hard ABS type plastics but the softer ones like vinyls etc, since the smell they give off are the chemicals off-gassing. Any cheaper new toys I get, which have a strong smell, I put in a window until the smell dissipates. Putting the toy in the sun will accelerate the off-gassing, but you may not want to do that with something expensive like a Hot Toys fig.

Label is there for California and to be able to be sold in California. Apparently everything causes cancer in CA.

if it's good enough for a label in Cali...it's good enough for me to avoid.
i bought a hot air popcorn popper from Walmart. opened it up and it had that Cali warning..NOPE..good enough for me...it went back to the store.

webz 03-22-2019 05:57 PM

California thinks everything causes cancer. Pretty sure there is a warning they give to every baby born that “life causes cancer”... I ignore most of that drivel. You can look in the news on any given day and there will be a California university study about coffee being the worst thing for you while another study (sometimes at the SAME university!) will have a study that coffee is the healthiest thing you could ever consume.

Remember that 99.999999999% of these studies are looking at lab mice that are exposed to things at a concentration that is millions of times more than you as a human would ever be exposed.
