McFarlane MK11 Raiden and Johnny Cage

Mortal Kombat 11 - Johnny Cage and Raiden Figures by McFarlane Toys

I may not have played the game but those are some damn cool figures!

Dolemite 12-19-2019 08:08 AM

Holy shit, these figures are both hideous. Look how Johnny Cage's weird chest has an ugly cutout that the neck goes into, the skin tones that don't even match from section to section, and the massive gap in the mid-torso joint. It's SOOO gross.

Anthony's Customs did reviews where he savaged the McFarlane Scorpion/Sub-Zero figures (as well as the Doom Slayer) for having articulation that doesn't work, sub-par paint, and just bad overall really bad design (it's the hardest I've ever seen him be on figures), and it looks like MK wave 2 continues that trend.

Owning the Doom Slayer myself, I can concur with pretty much everything he said. The overall sculpt is good and it's nice to FINALLY have a Doom figure - any Doom figure, I'll take it - but it's seriously like no one at McFarlane knows how to design an action figure that isn't Fortnite. I'm 100% serious. Almost of the articulation on the Doom Slayer is completely useless and you can't get him into anything much beyond the standard "hero" (meaning standing there doing nothing) pose. The joints are weird and poorly-implemented, and the sculpt prevents most of the limbs from having any range of motion at all.

It's so disappointing. It's like Todd's been making statues for so long that he doesn't know what action figures do. I mean, just copy Hasbro or NECA, dude. I don't get it since the Halo figures were pretty great back in the day and they're doing a good job with Fortnite but MK and Doom are trash.

Comedian 12-19-2019 08:16 AM

I don’t, know. When I first looked at these I thought, wow those are some kick as-s looking figures. I’ll have to watch that review you are talking about. Other than the goblin king and Star Trek I have not bought any of Todd’s stuff lately to get a feel on articulation. Obviously, being a dc collector that will change come 2020.

deecee4 12-19-2019 08:35 AM

Wow, the Johnny figure looks pretty dam cool!

Warning: These reviews are hilariously BRUTAL. But believe me, that brutality is well-deserved.

Finally, my favorite Mortal Kombat character...Johnny Cage!

Awesome!

webz 12-19-2019 11:06 AM

Blech. Gonna stick with Storm Collectibles' classic take for my MK fix. The new games have atrocious costumes. I hate, hate, HATE the "Johnny" chest tattoo. Stupidest thing. MK has become a parody of itself.

He is pretty funny. Everything is “gross”.

After watching these I can only say. Touché.

Dolemite 12-19-2019 12:56 PM

The fact that the Doom Slayer's legs only can go 15 degrees forward or backward is enough reason to hate on McFarlane. I mean, why bother adding articulation at all if it does nothing?

Comedian 12-19-2019 01:15 PM

Dumpster fire I believe is over-used but that figure was a dumpster fire. I hope the dc stuff has some better engineers.

Really? Either he must not have been trying very hard with the articulation or it was stuck on his copy of the figure, because on my Doom Slayer the legs aren't a problem at all. They can get nearly 90° raised (they do push against the flexible pelvis piece a bit, but there's a reason it's flexible) and he can do the splits all the way out. The arms are definitely the problem (I fixed mine by trimming the top of the shoulder cover thing and trimmed away into the ring around the shoulder joint socket on the torso), but the legs are pretty good.

EDIT: Looking at his Scorpion review, he seems kind of absurdly negative, and seems to have kind of asininely high standards. Giving that figure 3/10 articulation when it's mostly about as poseable or hindered as many Black Series or Legends figures? Constantly calling the figure gross? It's silly.

Augustus10 12-19-2019 03:34 PM

They are $20 figures! What are you expecting? The only $20 line that actually competes with the $100 imports is Hasbro's Star Wars Black Series. For $20 I think you are getting a really good figure. As for Anthony Customs. its one person's opinion. not the gospel. He doesnt own every figure on earth. On his top 100 list of the last decade he didnt have a SINGLE star wars figure. even if you are not a Star Wars fan, you have to respect Tamashii Nations Samurai/Star Wars figs and include something from that line in the top 100 figures of the last decade.

Actually, I don't. I have limited experience with Star wars toys. I got a Black Series Vader and Hyperreal Vader and that's about it. Maybe a yoda as a kid. No Star Wars toys on my list of top 300 figures. We just live in different worlds.

And they do compare, because once you take away the importing fees of the middleman, they are actually not that different... you are comparing a $20 figure to a $40-60 figure. It's similar to comparing a Black Series Obiwan to the SH Figuarts Obiwan. You CAN make super detailed, articulated figures for less than $30, with butterfly joints in the shoulders and articulation not limited by poor sculpting. McFarlane chose not to. Add to that the mediocre paintwork (I looked at 9 recently that all had subzero with eyes looking in different directions and sloppy armor "details"). These are almost as bad as the $6 jazzwares MK figures from KBToys in the early 2000's.

And look at jazzwares now...their fortnite figs are easily some of the most solid line of figs out today. Even some of the ridiculous characters like peely and leviathan are top notch. ( who doesn't love a gun toting, mutant banana? Haha ) . Mcfartlame seems intent on releasing mediocre figs.

Krunomo 12-19-2019 06:09 PM

I don't think the Doom figure is terrible. It's a chunky design and a chunky design results in something that is difficult to move. I mean has anyone ever seen the articulation of an actual body builder? Guys get so big they can barely move.

That said, the doom figure is a few adjustments away from being great and that's a shame. They missed the mark but only slightly. His arms being bulky could have had double joints and a swivel at the top makes all the difference. In saying that, you can add a swivel by swapping his arms out for a set of absorbing man arms (not my idea some guys on another forum). Making his arms swivel makes a huge difference to possibility. Of course you shouldn't have to do this but it's worth noting that it's an easy enough mod.

Interesting! Are there more pics of this modded Doom Slayer available? And where'd he get the BFG??

Sure. Can take as many photos as you want. Name your poison.

As for the BFG. That's 3d printed using an anycubic photon. Resin 3d printer results in a really good print at this scale. This was printed with clear green resin. Printed hollow and now attempting to get some LEDs in there.

File is here

Should be around 10cm to get it right.

I also modded the head. Dremeled a socket so it could fit a NECA T2 head. Helmet is as is but now has a carved up head piece that plugs in so it has a neck.

I like the action figure and statue for Cage but that's about it. Storm hinted at doing one for Cage w/ Pesina's likeness. I hope they go forward with it.

So also would like to throw a Word in
here regarding the Quality of the MK Figures.

I currently own MCFarlane Sub Zero.
Still waiting for Scorpion.

The Quality for an 20$ Figure is very Amazing.
Very Durable and Posable.

Also the Joints Overall are very good
and durable for a 20$ Toy. Plastic itself
Does not seem Cheap. Also Especially the
Hand Joints are very Durable.

On Convention and Product Screenshots, Sub Zeros Face
looked a little bit Cartoony and Strange.

But in Hand, he looks very Realistic
exactly how he looks in the Game.

YES, Johnny Cage Sculpt does look
weird indeed. But the Raiden Figure looks awesome.

Another Word on the Stock of the Figures:
Sub Zero and Scorpion are almost sold out everywhere.
Sub Zero is hard to get, and so is Scorpion.

At least here in European Union, Vendors
have Trouble getting these in Stock.

Sub Zero was Sold out on Instant, at one of my Stores.
It seems the Figures sold very well.

From an Youtube Review of Scorpion i saw, that
most People are also very Happy with the Figures
and the Articulation.

I hope MCFarlane Continues these...and maybe my Dream
comes true to get an Hanzo Hasashi / Scorpion unmasked
And Finally a Liu Kang Figure.

As much as i love all Mortal Kombat Games,
I do not like the Character Designs of the old Games.

That is the Reason why i do not support Storm
Collectibles, since they just do all damn Old
Character Designs over and over again, instead of moving forward to MK 9-11

I Finally want an Liu Kang, Hanzo Hasashi, Jade
Figures from MK10 and MK11.

I think there is a High Chance, that MCFarlane will
also do Spawn Figure from MK11 once the DLC Character is
out in March 2020

Vamp 12-19-2019 11:30 PM

Anthonys customs is a bad toy reviewer, he doesnt like anything.
Every toy company has good and bad figs. all of them cant be golden.

McFarlane's Borderlands and Fortnite figs are top notch thou
That being said, i getting both of these, its Johnny Cage!

Todd's been doing that - adding articulation that doesn't work since the days of the old Spawn toys. My Spawn the Black Knight had movable hips but doesn't have knee articulation to accommodate it. Same with Spawn IV's legs.

As for the MK figures, I'd go for Storm Collectibles' offerings instead.
