interesting.

Randy had been saying the Tokka and Rahzar release would be different since before the mess of the last few weeks. So it sounds like this plan was (at least partially) in motion for a while.

Yeah, I remember. It's a good plan. These two make sense as a direct-to-consumer. The movie was popular, but these aren't "bebop & rocksteady" so their popularity is hard to estimate. Many fans of the original movies found them silly or "Muppet"ish and might not get them.

This will be good, and give everyone a chance to get these up front. Bad for those that don't use credit cards or miss the window, but a week is honestly more than long enough.

Besides, if you miss them, you'll probably be able to get these in the future as game repaints for Turtles in Time (unless they do a new mold like Slash and Baxter).

OriginalFire 07-28-2020 09:48 AM

Made to order. Thank NECA ☺ so awesome. I'm more excited about the made to order kinda. I'm so happy about it. I wish the window was two weeks, but I'll take what I'm getting. :)

What's funny is that the main reason I want these is because they Jim Henson Company characters, so them being "Muppetish" is just icing on the cake for me :D

That's cool. I have no issue with them. As a kid seeing it in theaters (before the internet existed outside of universities and military) I remember being soooooo upset when they removed the barricade and out stepped a snapping turtle and a dog that were... "stupid infants". I was sooooo ready for movie Bebop and Rocksteady and Krang (especially since as a kid, I was hooked by then on the Mirage collections, which had the TCRI Utroms)... but the movie was too fun to stay mad. I still use the "prefight donut" dialog whenever I bring home a box of donuts for breakfast.

It took 20 years or so, but I did finally get excellent versions of B&R and Krang on the big screen (yes, I love Out of the Shadows). I guess I'll have to wait 20 years for the collectors version of these characters (not paying $900 for the ThreeZero versions)

ShabbyBlue 07-28-2020 10:38 AM

Watch them still sell out within seconds despite this plan. :)

Bo Ttef 07-28-2020 10:52 AM

Tokka has always looked good by Rahzar is just soooo Muppet looking that I can never accept him as anything "real" Secret of the Ooze did to TMNT basically what Batman and Robin did to the Burton Batverse for me- just drove it straight from coolsville to sillytown (lol) BUT... I'll probably still end up breaking down and pre-ordering both these guys.

Could still happen, if it's not a true made-to-order campaign. If they only plan to do 8k a wave, and it gets to 8k in orders, it's quite possible it'll sell out instantly. This is a $50ish project, not a $350 Sentinel or $575 Unicron, so more people will be able to order.

SpasticPlastic 07-28-2020 12:13 PM

I'm pretty sure he said in the interview that they go into production after next Friday, so it should be a true made to order thing.

Cryptozoologist 07-28-2020 12:14 PM

Randy Falk is a Turd

Just watched the Randy Falk TMNT interview with Pixel Dan and he really comes off as a giant Douche Bag. A defensive crybaby who generated NO sympathy from me as he pleaded for people not to be mean about his company's failings. He is just a unlikable Little B*tch.

Glad to see NECA taking a cue from Super 7. Hopefully mimicing a far superior company will help NECA be better.

Black Arbor 07-28-2020 12:22 PM

Yeahhhh three months sounds like too quick of a turnaround, granted I don't know everything about toymaking but this seems too good to be true...

Comedian 07-28-2020 12:39 PM

So what’s different about these? Why can these be offered direct but nothing else? I’m not complaining. This is a great step forward and I’m glad neca seems to be learning something from super7 and other made to order items like haslab.

Again, why this but not super shredder or the Casey set? Or the cartoon sets? Or the turtles live set?

I’ll have to watch that episode with Randy. Honestly, I’ve always liked Randy when ever I’ve seen him on video. His tweets can come off nasty, but the written word is tough to convey true feelings. I think neca is out of their element right now across the board and they aren’t changing fast enough or in the right direction to meet the needs of their customers.

I'm assuming Randy knows NECA really dropped the ball lately and folks are PISSED, so they're changing gears here with a more direct-to-consumer model, at least for the less desirable characters

Pure guess... Tokka and Rahzar don't belong to Playmates, they originally belonged to the Henson studio, and there are no side rights to deal with. That's just my guess, based on the whole reason the studio made Tokka and Rahzar in the first place... they didn't want to deal with Wolf Studio or Playmates for usage rights.

It’s covered in the interview. The agreement with target has various conditions that basically means product has to move through the target infrastructure, while Walmart is apparently more open for Neca to handle online orders. The state of agreements made Super Shredder locked up by Walmart but T&R weren’t solidified so they were able to keep them. Online availability isn’t a playmates issue, it’s a retailer agreement issue

Comedian 07-28-2020 02:23 PM

I’ll have to catch the interview. Sounds like there is more hope for the movie figures being made available with Walmart. The cartoon stuff at target seems like we may just be SOL.

dukefett 07-28-2020 02:52 PM

So why the hell did Target get the SDCC exclusive then? The figures are, at most, related to the movie, despite not being actual movie figures. Just rubs me the wrong way even more how the online for that was handled.

Neca’s list of allies grows thin. I assume they know this, and course correction is incoming.

Zeorn 07-28-2020 06:14 PM

Wait, they want a turtle product to be readily available for everyone who wants it? Not piss off their entire customer base outside the scalpers? What kind of business plan is that?

Well, well, well.....I had legitimately let go my desire to collect the movie tmnt stuff. I need to focus the cartoon turtles and what it will cost to get the important ones on eBay eventually.
I definitely wasn't going to try and get Tokka and Rahzar...BUT NOW...SUPER EASY PRE-ORDER and I know I will get it at original cost?
Sold!
This gives me more motivation to get the Raph and Casey pack again. I was done with it. After the last experience with the recent cartoon "release" I fully prepared myself for the possibility the cartoon and movie turtles will all be ebay items. I love turtles, so I'll buy a few cartoons on eBay, but that will be it for my budget. Can't do nothin' bout that.
Deep down, I don't think they will ever make enough of these retail toys to meet demand, and that will be that. So, okay, that's the biz, don't get hot webz lol. I have a certain budget. It will afford me a few cartoon turts on eBay. Done. That's the reality here.

If there is more made to order I might have budget to collect more movie turtle stuff. I want to prioritize Super7 turtles first before anything Neca at this point. So if there are a lot more Super7 exclusives and special releases, it will come first. I still want everything Super7 because I know I will get it, and it's at original cost. I'm so excited to get them....where as with Neca, if I get it, it will be like, Cool sculpts..but kind of not....

Meta 07-28-2020 07:44 PM

I'm just wondering when Super Shredder will go up and are they going to have him up on the NECA store and Walmart or just the NECA store. I just hope he will easy to get like this Tokka and Rahzar set.

According to Randy they already have the tooling done, meaning the production samples have already been engineered and the bugs worked out. Right now it's just a matter of telling the factory how many to make. The tooling and sample approval is what usually takes so long when making figures.

The Sentinel figure likely isn't even tooled yet because Hasbro didn't even know if they were going to actually make it. Seems NECA is taking a gamble, though not much of a gamble, and did the tooling before securing any orders. Normally they get the funding from what ever retailer they are going to sell to and then make the product. What they are doing here is risking getting only a few orders and potentially losing money, though again I don't see that happening.
