Very tempted to get the X-men mini gang, but afraid of the price. Wouldn’t be surprised if they charge ~70-80 USD per figure lol.

Spooked 06-26-2021 10:10 AM

The likeness on The Mummy isn't that great, but I'll gladly buy it over a NECA product any day...

The MiniCo Statues are typically $30 - $35 each.

How does a company typically make the call that they're going to skip certain actor's likeness rights? What makes the costume identifiable enough to not do likenesses for Ewan or Boris or BTTF2 Marty, but BTTF3 Doc and Giancarlo there get to look like their actors?

Dolemite 06-26-2021 05:45 PM

The Book of Boba Fett statue looks great.

Oh, that is pretty reasonable! Might have to keep an eye out for it...

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe they do have the likeness rights and just did a piss poor job. Awesome company, but you couldn’t pay me to display some of their translations of real actors’ faces. I imagine if they have scans of the actual actor though, that probably makes it a lot better.

Actually, I guess I would display them if paid to—as if that is actually a real thing that would actually happen—but my hyperbole was not really meant to hold up to scrutiny.

You're right, I just re-read the copy on their BTTF2 Marty and they namedrop Michael J Fox. Holy hell. I'm not accustomed to such poor resemblance with such sharp sculpts; the likeness is usually off because the sculptor is meh in general, but this is quality stuff aside from not looking anything like the actors

I'm honestly wondering if one of their leads has prosopagnosia

Skoob 06-26-2021 08:02 PM

The BTTF sculpts of Marty and Doc Brown look marvelous. That clock face has a real working (e.g., battery operated) clock movement, yes?

Had to look that up. Will be fun to start casually peppering that into conversations.

To consider:

1) Kinda hard to get Michael J. Fox to sit still for facial capture these days. Wokka wokka.

No, but seriously, he is a national treasure suffering from a debilitating disease so my apologies for going there. Bad taste. But it’s also undeniably true.

2) It took like almost 40 years to get decent likenesses of Harrison Ford in plastic form and he is just a regular looking dude with no crazy facial features, so artists do have their work cut out for them trying to sculpt from visual media as opposed to the typical face snatch technology they use in these exciting modern times.

Imho, probably why Giancarlo looks like he was plucked from the very screen and Ewan Macgregor looks like some rando beard enthusiast you might meet at your local craft brewery.

Thor Laserpunch 06-26-2021 08:32 PM

Tell me that mummy doesn’t look like Christopher Meloni…

Yes, but remember that their 1/10 lines also used to be in the $90~$110 range, now they are mostly in the $130~$150 range, some even higher.

Meta 06-26-2021 10:15 PM

I love the Grogu one. The Book of Boba Fett one looks amazing and the BTTF3 one looks awesome as well. Might have to see about getting a few of these if they are not too expensive.

This is what I am worried about as well. They use to be reasonably priced before, but have really ramped up the pricing in the past couple of years. So there is a chance that these might also be priced higher. Hope ~30 though. More than $50 is just not worth it.

The Kenner 12 inch Han Solo figure from the late 70s has a decent likeness of Ford. Good enough that Kenner repurposed it for their Indy figure and ILM even used the figure for an FX sequence in one of the Indy films..

Thor Laserpunch 06-27-2021 09:24 PM

That Kenner jawn likeness is so soft it could literally be like any white guy from TV in the 70s—Lee Majors, Robert Blake, Travolta, whichever one of Starsky & Hutch had the better hair. If they made the skin tone darker he could also be Erik Estrada.

dukefett 06-28-2021 08:29 AM

I like the idea of the BttF3 statue a lot, not my favorite of the trilogy but that's a great moment in time that captures their friendship I think. I don't see MJF a lot as others said though, but it's definitely better than the BttF2 statue.

So you're saying that headsculpt could just as easily be a character that drives around in a truck with a pet monkey?

Thor Laserpunch 06-28-2021 02:24 PM

Right turn, Clyde!

Also Michael Parks because who doesn’t need TV’s Bronson in their life.
