So... Hasbro gave up after Drizzt, huh?

These look neat though!

Oh man oh man…..i had these as a kid and look forwards to them. And Drizzt is forgotten realms and i believe these guys are greyhawk ( the normal realm in dnd ) so hasbro may have the rights to forgotten realms guys and neca might have greyhawk, dragonlance and ravensloft.

BagJo 09-23-2021 06:18 PM

I might have to get Warduke, these both look great though

TheBlueMarvel 09-23-2021 06:27 PM

Holy shit

Yeah, I guess so. Perhaps, there was not enough interest for them to keep going with it, so they outsourced it to NECA. I think Mythic Legions looks better, but these look good also. I wish the characters were more muscular though.

Hasbro owns D&D. So would they not own the whole thing? I don't know anything about D&D but I did look it up a few days ago. Perhaps, Wikipedia is wrong.

Its possible drizzt was a one shot deal. Cant wait too see more dnd stuff.

ludovicotek 09-23-2021 08:09 PM

Hmmm. I was pretty damn excited for the teaser, but the reveal is a bit of a letdown. Grimsword looks ok, but Warduke is really disappointing. I don’t like the realistic human body at all. Seems so off. The original toys were so damn “toyetic” that honoring that aesthetic would have been the way to go. Similar to what Super7 is doing for TMNT. I mean, Neca did great with the Defenders of the Earth and Gargoyles Goliath. Those captured the essence of the characters really well. This is a rare miss from Neca in my opinion.

Regardless, pretty cool how sword and sorcery is pretty prevalent lately with toys. MOTU Origins, Golden Axe, Conan, and now this.

80sforged 09-23-2021 08:24 PM

So in for Warduke. Would love to see the rest of the old D&D line done. Also HE NEEDS NIGHTMARE!

Also in regards to Drizzt. That was supposed to be based on his appearance in D&D Dark Alliance. The NECA license can be considered separate. Also I think Drizzt did not do that well, though I bought him, as he is still available on Pulse.

lowsugar 09-23-2021 09:12 PM

Warduke is an instant buy for me if I see him in store. I had him as a kid as well.

They should bring the Dragonlance and Ravenloft series to action figure form. So many great characters from the novels. I used to read them as a young adult.

Knowing these toy companies, they'll release just 99% male figures and 1% or 0% female figures (McFarlane anyone?). I try to support female figures where I can. Like I buy only female wrestling figures at full price and some male figures when they're on clearance. Believe me, voting with your wallet will get their attention.

Another thing is I guess they don't have to worry about censoring guns since these are medieval figures (McFarlane again comes to mind with the whole WB BS).

I never saw the Drizzt set in stores anywhere. I saw a statue set of Drizzt at a GameStop a while back though. I don't collect statues so it was a hard pass for me. No, I don't plan to order the set from pulse. It's either in a brick-and-mortar store or no buy for me.

OriginalFire 09-23-2021 09:12 PM

So are these based on the 80s toys?

These are looking kick ass but I like the original toy look better too. These figures look like NECA's main style. It's what I would expect from them. If Super7 got in on it we'd definitely see the original look. I hope Hasbro is still in on D&D. That Drizzt with a Panther is beautiful. I love that Panther. Boy do I love it.

ShabbyBlue 09-23-2021 09:19 PM

I'm still hoping Hasbro does a Black Series style line for the DnD cartoon

Agree with everything you said. Warduke looks off...the various pieces of his attire looks oversized on that body. Wouldve preferred him on the DOTE body or the stylized motuc style. A few years back someone made some aftermarket option parts to make a Warduke out of a MOTUC buck and the finished figure looked phenomenal. Oh well I'll probably get it anyway.

OriginalFire 09-24-2021 12:41 AM

These characters needed to be more muscular.

RamenRider 09-24-2021 12:48 AM

Yeah Warduke is too slim looking. Not wimpy, it's a muscular sculpt, but for a Sword & Sorcery fantasy barbarian / swordfighter he lacks a bit of... "mass".

Otherwise these are good IMO. If they are available globally I might bite, but if they are exclusive to this particular shop / US-exclusive it's an easy pass.

Warduke was from the Greyhawk module, but I believe Grimsword was just made up by LJN as toy.

I think Warduke was also created for the toyline? Reading up on it, it seems he has no appearance before becoming a toy, only being featured in modules after.

Dolemite 09-24-2021 05:28 AM

Well, this is an 'holy shit' kind of announcement. I had Warduke as a kid and I used to love that figure. Very excited that he's getting a modern remake, although I agree with many in this thread that he needs to be 'roided up a little. Still a must-buy for me, however.

That said, why don't I see any joints on Warduke's armored arm or leg? Is it because it's an early prototype, or is NECA going with some sort of material sleeve over the limbs? Or even worse (but least likely), giving those limbs no articulation at all (which would be really dumb and never happen)? I haz a confuse.

Oh, and as for Grimsword, I don't remember him and he looks ALMOST cool, but more goofy than anything else. He looks like a mish-mash of random parts someone threw together.

Definitely early prototype I'd say, there are no shots showcasing any articulation, they’ll do that with an updated piece later.

Jester 09-24-2021 06:16 AM

As per usual with NECA, these look pretty great, although how they'll turn out once in-hand is another matter... Not sure why The first two are Warduke and...Grimsword? Rather than Warduke and Strong heart, though.

Oh puh-leeze. McFarlane has already released way more female figures in his DC Universe line than LJN ever produced for the original AD&D range, which only ever included Mercion and Deeth amongst the actual, articulated action figures. Neither Charmay, nor Helayne, nor Raven, nor Silverain, nor Aurella nor Molliver, nor Merrygold nor Filaree would ever be produced as action figures by LJN, despite featuring in the tie-in media and gaming modules released at the time (Skylla did see release as an unarticulated lump of PVC).

I wish McFarlane was making these. Then I wouldn't have to worry about destroying them just by removing them from the package...

More recent artwork may have buffed him up, but classic 80s Warduke wasn't anywhere near so ripped as to demand a Masters of the Universe-style physique:

Not sure why they made him shorter than Grimsword, though....

He looks like he could be a hunter from The Running Man.

webz 09-24-2021 07:16 AM

These looks pretty cool! Never had anything D&D related as a child, since my father was convinced it was a gateway portal to satanism. He once caught me looking at a AD&D sourcebook at B. Daltons and he about exploded like I was looking at hardcore pornography!

Ah, the good ol’ days…

Hes an evil warrior archetype so its not too much of a stretch for him to be on a classics buck. I dont think anyone would think this looks off or ridiculous. But since this is Neca anyway, wouldve preferred it on the Defenders of the Earth buck.

Anyway, not a dealbreaker for me. I'm glad they're doing this.
