Where to get weapons and accessories for action figures
 

Hi all,

I'm new here so forgive me if this is the wrong thread to post this question. Just wondering where the "go-to" place is for acquiring some weapons and accessories for GI JOE Classified and McFarlane DC figures?

I know there are some sellers on eBay and Etsy selling customized weapons/guns for the GI JOE Classified line, but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of options for the 7 inch McFarlane DC or Spawn figures? Also, as much as I think that these weapons are awesome, they're a bit over priced in my opinion? Especially for something that are 3d printed... I'm guessing it's because it takes a long time to make them?

I also know Marauder sells some for the 6 inch GI JOE figures, but their selection seems limited at this time. And again, they don't offer anything for the 7 inch scale for the McFarlane figures.

Anyways, just wondering if there's a place that anyone can recommend. Thanks all.

You may not like the price but they are fantastic. About the only 1/12 guns I buy for my Classified figures anymore.

McFarlane's online store has a "munitions pack" for their figures.

Yeah I've seen Grid Iron on eBay and they have amazing stuff! Really detailed! I've heard their stuff is 3d printed too (don't know if this is true or not), but how are their guns working out for you so far? Are they brittle? Have they ever snapped on you? I ask because I've purchased some 3d printed accessories from other sellers before and they've snapped when trying to fit one of them into one of my GI JOE's hand.

Now, maybe it's because I chose a seller with a lower price point???

I purchased a set of the McFarlane Munitions Pack, and although some were good and scaled quite OK, some were just FREAKISHLY LARGE!!! LOL. Especially the rifles! It almost looked like guns for a 12 inch figure... =)

I have a few of their pieces and they are quite durable. Easily the best quality I have found thus far and a large step above many of the cast or 3D printed options I have found in the past.

You may also want to look into the weapon packs from Valaverse if you are able to find any for sale. However, their pieces are more delicate than most so I would take extra care with their use.

Grid Iron stuff are definitely nice, but also too rich for my blood. To me, it doesn't make sense to pay more for accessories than the actual product itself. It's like paying $2000 for a spoiler of a $1000 car. Ha ha. Anyway, those that can afford it, they do enhance the Classified greatly.

6" scale is popular, and there are many options, depending on your budget, may I refer you to the sister site: Hisstank, where there's been 18 pages of discussion on this topic. You will probably find something you like there.

As for McFarlane, 7" scale is not that popular, so right now, McFarlane's weapon pack is really your only option, not counting the 3D printed items on eBay.

Gridiron uses sterolithography to produce their wares. It's the oldest and sturdiest 3d printing production technique. I've bought maybe 50 weapons from them and not one of them has ever broken. The printing "layers" are much less prominent and in some cases seem completely absent. Sometimes they arrive slightly warped due to the Arizona heat. But 1 minute in boiled (not boiling) water snaps them straight again. Once you have them in hand you know exactly where your money went.

My problem with Valaverse weapons is that the scaling is all wrong and all over the place. Some of the triggers/trigger guards are so big Classified figures can't hold them. As you pointed out they are made of ABS and very easy to snap. Especially where the stock joins the receiver. I also think the just feel cheap. Especially after holding Gridiron weapons.

I've been shooting since I was 7 and grew up around firearms. I also do work in the industry. In my professional opinion Gridiron produces the most detailed, exact and scale accurate 1/12 firearms on the market today. Then it's Marauder's for me. For price and modularity. You'll have to do a little sanding in certain areas and apply a little glue but, I actually enjoy that work.

ActionFigureFan, If you can I recommend you take about 30 bucks and order a few of the less expensive Gridiron guns. Maybe a couple of pistols and a fixed magazine rifle. See how you like them. Maybe snag some Marauders guns to.

I'll definitely consider it. I don't have to have the most detailed guns per say, since I'm just a casual collector and customizer. But they sure would be nice to have. Maybe I'll just get a couple of the ones on the "cheaper" side as you suggested, and then go from there.

Really? That's really interesting. I would think that they would have about the same level of popularity since I see McFarlane all the time.

Is this based on your experience or can you point me to an article or something that, that talks about this? I'm just curious to see why and I love a good read, especially when it is in tune with a topic I like. Thanks.

McFarlane only started making 7" scale figures since 2019, when Mattel lost the license to the DC Universe. When McFarlane announced that they'll start making their DC figures in 7" scale, it was the irks of many. And they lost the ability to make guns for their DC figures shortly after, that's why there are not a lot of choices. Whereas 6" scale's been around for a long time, across many toy makers and licenses. Sure, McFarlane 7" figures are everywhere now, because they're current products. Before that, I can't even remember who made 7" scale figures...maybe others can help me out here.

Perhaps "popular" is not the right term, I should say "been around longer", which affects accessories' availability.

Wow, I didn't realize McFarlane's contract with DC was that recent. But that makes complete sense to me.

I know NECA makes 7 inch figures too, but I don't think they make any accessories either.

When you say, "And they lost the ability to make guns for their DC figures shortly after", is that because of film makers banning the use of firearms on merchandise? If so, that would be Warner Bros for DC correct?

I think I read somewhere else before that Hasbro is kind of going through something similar with Disney.

Anyways, I'm guessing it would only be a matter of time until others start coming out with 1:10 accessories. Until then, I guess our only option is EBAY and McFarlane's Munitions Pack... =)

Yes, I believe that's the consensus. Early McFarlane DC figures have guns (Thomas Wayne Batman, Red Hood, etc.), then suddenly, ALL their DC figures stop having guns, even gun centric characters like Red Hood and Suicide Squad movie characters like Peacemaker. You can see their Munition Pack was meant to address some of these issues. The Desert Eagle with long barrel was obviously meant for Peacemaker and the dual pistols are obviously meant for Red Hood and Grifter, etc.

I've always liked the McFarlane figs and really have nothing bad to say about them, but then again, I only started collecting as a hobby a couple years back. Aren't they good?

I like figures in the 7-inch style too, but I can understand if someone has been used to the 6 inch scale be annoyed when a new toy maker creates a new size for an already existing toy franchise.

McFarlane, DST, and NECA have been doing 7" figures for like 20+ years, they're not anything new. The lack of 3rd party accessories isn't about popularity of the scale so much as the size is typically reserved for adult collectibles and they tend to come with what they need to.

Not till McFarlane moved into DC has there been any substantial need for outfitting 1/10 the same way there's been for 1/12 or 1/18. Just give it some time.

I think that's the main reason. I remember this board (and many others) had many voicing that the new 7" McFarlane DC figures won't scale or fit with their already existing 6" DC Universe figures collection made by Mattel. I never collected DC Universe figures, I've always been a Marvel guy, but I can understand how that would bother people.

McFarlane since 2019, but yes, DST and NECA have been doing 7" figures for many years. But DST and NECA's products are relatively small compare to Hasbro, Mattel and others. However, you're right, just give it time.

McFarlane doing 7" scale figures goes way back to their Movie Maniacs in 1998 and the second phase (staction figures) of the original Spawn line. Even the Color Tops line in 2016 was still 7" scale. They basically are the reason that other adult collector lines go for that scale.

Gotcha! Yeah that makes sense and I would be pretty ticked off too. Even more so if I was one of those who have amassed a good number of 6 inch DC figs, then all of a sudden, all of my accessories are no longer compatible for the new line to be released? YIKES!


Completely agree with you here. I own 2 Arnold figures from NECA, one from Predator (Dutch) and the other from T2. Both figures are 7 inches tall, but their overall size look small when compared to my McFarlane Spawn and DC figures.

Yeah, I remember seeing some of those Spawn figures back in the days. Never really knew they were McFarlne's though... =) That's good to know.

AFAIK, while NECA is "7-inch scale" (a 6' tall person is a 7" figure), McFarlane is generally true 1/10, where a 6' person makes for a 7.2" figure. This is why the NECA RoboCop is shorter than the McF Robo... hell, the NECA Robo is shorter than McF's Jean-Luc!

All Spawn figures are from McFarlane Toys, FYI. Todd McFarlane is Spawn's creator, after all, and made McFarlane (originally Todd's) Toys specifically to create Spawn figures.

Ahhh, got it. So NECA isn't true 1/10 scale. I thought 1:10 is 7-inch. =) Sheeesh, so may different scales and sizes from different makers. I guess it's a way for makers to make sure their toys is INCOMPATIBLE with toys from other brands. From a business standpoint I guess that makes sense.

To be fair McFarlane scaling is all over the place. And he's never adhered to closely to his own scaling system. Case in point the new DC Multiverse stuff.

Well, after taking into consideration all the info you've all mentioned here (and thanks for the suggestions and GREAT discussion by the way), I found an eBay seller earlier that I'm gonna try. mini_arms_depot.

They offer sets (sometimes 6 or 8 piece sets) for the price of one gun from other sellers. After reading their description on some of their listings, it mentioned that the guns are injection molded, and not 3d printed (also states that they're much sturdier).

From the pictures on some of their listings, it doesn't look like their guns have the same "detail and quality" as Grid Iron's, but you can't beat the price. And for a "casual" collector like me, I just want my figures to have some guns and have some in reserve in case.

Grid Iron is still something I want to try later on, but it's still a bit too rich for my blood as well. Maybe I'll beg my wife to buy me some on my Birthday! LOL!
