HT released a Bane way back when the film came out. I actually just picked it up (I don't dislike it as much as others do).

However, and I'm sure Toyark's just reading the press e-mail, this isn't really a re-release. Sounds like almost everything is new.

VashTS 01-19-2023 08:57 AM

I never liked the movie nor bane in the movie.

Probable pass.

There's a lesson here. Wait for the re-release.

That said, I wasn't aware that Bane had much of a fan following.

It depends on how broadly you're considering the character. Comic Bane has maintained a pretty strong popularity since his entrance as the man who broke the Bat, that initial wave alone has carried him pretty well in addition to his continuing appearances. As for the Nolan trilogy Bane it's definitely muddied. When the movie was new I certainly saw a variety of opinions on the depiction; some thought he was a good villain, some were upset that he was "just a henchman" (I personally find this to be an exaggerated take), and others just couldn't get past the voice.

A fair take but it's been 10 years. It's not like that time Jedi Luke was released right before a Jedi Luke with Endor poncho was put up for preorder.

I like Bane but when someone referred to him as "90's trash" I didn't dispute it.

I think the growing consensus is that Bautista is gonna be Bane in James Gunn's new DC movie-verse which is supposed to last a decade. If that is true I think I will probably end up preferring the Tom Hardy version.

I'm basically on the same boat. I took a quick liking to Bane but Knightfall itself was a mess, the Vengeance of Bane one-shots that bookend things work better for the character than the main event. He was very much created as a '90s gimmick to humble the hero like Doomsday with Superman. Now where I contest that Bane rises above the likes of Doomsday is that he isn't just a monster, there's an underlying human story with room for potential depth and exploration that later writers could work with. Backing things up though, yeah both in-universe and in the real world Bane is going to be forever trapped by being created for that one big headline moment which was very '90s. I get why Paul Dini and Bruce Timm were not initially impressed by the character and his debut on the animated series wasn't flattering but even they seemed to soften their stance because in the new adventures Bane was treated more seriously.

Yeah Bane > Doomsday by a wide margin. I don't recall Nolan being enamored with Bane either but I thought he did a good job making him a credible threat to Batman (which he is) for the finale.

I meant to thank you guys for the follow-up commentary re: popularity of Bane.
