It'd be great if Hot Toys would stop making figures based on box office bombs.

Some complain about Hot Toys not making announcements before a movie’s release, and some complain about the movie turning out bad and them making a toy for it.

TheBlueMarvel 06-28-2023 06:56 AM

There haven't been many box office blockbusters since the pandemic. Maybe 5 in the last 4 years...

If only there was a version of Indiana Jones that was both universally revered and financially successful, then Hot Toys could've made that instead.

1. Didn't bring up the pandemic.

2. Didn't bring up blockbusters.

3. Despite the pandemic there have been plenty of financially successful films that weren't necessarily "blockbusters".

4. People can come up with whatever excuse they want but the reality is there's zero interest in this movie. This has to be some kind of mandate.

5. I've long argued that, given the cost of these particular figures, HT should be focusing on older properties or at the very least waiting until the show/movie has been released to show off a figure. Nevermind the fact that this movie's going to tank hard, this is a blatant cash grab. They couldn't even be bothered to make a headsculpt with a removable fedora. Who knows what else is hidden behind spoilers.

Thatannoyingguy 06-28-2023 08:09 AM

This could easily be used as an old-man-in-distress action figure. Like Spider-Man comes swooping in to save him from crossing the street.

  1. I know you didn’t, I brought it up.
  2. **See above**
  3. Yes, I know that “blockbuster” is a subjective descriptor, as is “bomb” and this happens to be one of the reasons why I employed the language that I did. Sensibilities aren’t uniform from person to person.
  4. You have opinions, that’s good, but they're just that – opinions. Not everything represents an agenda or a mandate. They seem to contemporaneously make toys based on whatever the current sci-fi/fantasy-media zeitgeist puts out. Pretty simple Occam’s razor stuff, right?
  5. Again, that’s a great opinion, but they have established a model that has worked for them for years. If you have a better idea, seek funding, and open your own shop. An alternative is to try to get hired by Hot Toys to convince them of the efficacy of your plans. Also, if you don’t like this movie, for whatever reason, simply don’t see it. What does bemoaning the ancillary uses of the license do for you internally?
  6. It doesn’t bother me, but, if you would like, you can communicate with me without bullets.

Could also easily be used as an emo lightsaber wielding kid’s dad, a cop from a sci fi city in 2049. It can be anything you want :)

Avatar 2, Black Panther 2, Spider-Man No Way Home, Super Mario Bros, Ghostbusters Afterlife, Shang Chi, Dune, Tenet, Godzilla vs Kong, Mortal Kombat, Venom 2, No Time To Die, F9 … that’s 13 right there…

Still subjective as I've seen movies that do north of $100mil be considered failures by many. The new metric, considering worldwide box, seems to have settled at a billion. Of your list, off the top of my head, only two to three of those hit a billion.

A billion isn’t the settled metric. Not by a long shot. In order to be considered a success, a movie must make its production and expenses back, plus turn a profit for the company. During the pandemic, that was a long shot, since theaters were forcing reduced seating to promote distancing, reduced showtimes, etc.

Every single movie I listed met or wildly exceeded the expectations of the studio and/or the media. But let’s add a few more, just for giggles… Jurassic World Dominion, TopGun Maverick, minions: rise of Gru, and The Batman.

Also, today’s Hollywood definition of “Blockbuster” is any movie with a large production budget, more than one major movie star, and that often have a large box office draw.

Nothing says “makes over a billion worldwide”.

A movie being financially successful, or exceeding expectations is a separate conversation from a movie being a blockbuster.

Thanks for sharing what you’ve found in the way of definitions, but here’s what I found when searching the term:

“How much does a film have to make today to be considered a blockbuster?
In the case of a movie, a blockbuster is understood to generate profits of no less than $100,000,000.00 in United States currency. Generally, this figure must be earned within a relatively short period of time, such as a couple of months.May 18, 2023”

By this definition, Shazam 2, which has made $75mil in profit is nearly at the threshold of being a blockbuster despite also being universally panned. So, yeah, the interpretation seems to be loose, or even subjective.

Keep in mind that I used the term blockbuster as the antithesis of bomb to make a point about subjectivity. You can use whatever standard you want to determine blockbuster, I won’t lose any sleep.

“Well it proves one thing… you … don't have the education enough to admit when you're wrong.”

And back on the ignore block you go. Was a mistake taking you off it. Still add nothing to the conversation. Oh well… live and learn.

Ouch.

Mark Hamill, in discussion about the Star Wars sequels, distinguished between profitability and quality. The priority is not to produce 'good movies.' All that matters is profit.

Sure, they have rights to not be saved. Spider-Man tried to save his life! The nerve on that guy.

Let’s erase that Han Solo from memory.

Welcome to capitalism

I think this film is going to bomb. Maybe worst than The Flash. We’ll see.

Absolute psychopathic capitalism, yes.

Something was bothering me about this sculpt of Harrison Ford, and I finally figured out what it is. It's not the sculpt, it's Ford's grooming. It's the same thing that they got wrong in Ford's last Star Wars appearance: whether as Old Indy or as Old Solo, Ford should have gotten a good, close haircut. I'll chalk it up as part of the broader tendency nowadays to depict aging white heroes as inept and unkempt and obsolete. At least he shaved.

Y'know I actually watched a clip yesterday from the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles where Harrison Ford made an appearance as Indy with a shaggy haircut and a bit of a beard (apparently it was around the same time he filmed The Fugitive so he couldn't shave it), now THAT would've made a cooler variant than this sad old Indy haha
