I think my Cable Modem is dieing
So for the past 24 hours my modem has been fidgety. I've called my cable company(Time Warner) and there are no outages.
It seems like every so often, between 8 to 30 minutes, my internet will slow to a crawl and read limited or no connectivity. I know its my modem, or purchance my cable company is lying to me, because when my internet slows, my phones dont work. Its been happening all day today. anybody else think its dieing? or maybe its just a bit of a hickup day for some reason |
It's possible....I've had a modem overheat and burn out. IT may be too late to try and move it out of any dusty or confined areas..
But I'd look at the frequency of this. You said you only had this happening for 1 day. It might be there is line work being done, or that the bandwidth was shortened by extreme usage in your area. There are lots and lots of reasons that this could be happening, the only defining factor is how long it occurs for and how often... Keep us posted! Hope all is well man |
If your using a windows computer, hit ALT-CTRL-DEL and click on the networking tab. You should get a graph that shows your current network usage. If you have a lot of network traffic with everything closed, chances are somethings clogging your modem with too much traffic. (When my computer had ARMY in its name, I used to get random attacks from China - very annoying.)
If there's no traffic going through, and your connection is still boggled, it's your modem going out. Although it could be the router. My router went bad once and it blocked my phone service, even though the phone went through the modem and not the router. Maybe you could pull the router and see if that helps. |
I'd suggest resetting/rebooting your router and cable modem to see if clears up your problem. It may renew your IP address. Do you know if Time Warner is doing any major work in your area? Maybe they are installing new lines or something. If you don't get better results in a week or so, I'd suggest you have them open a ticket to the Engineers so they can "ping your modem" and see if there is an issue on their end our your end.

I did a full system restart on everything. shut down all computers, my router, and my modem. so far its running good. knock on wood.
I'm in Ohio and I just ran 2 bandwidth tests from speakeasy to San Fransisco and Chicago heres the results Sanfran : 8.62 mps DL, .68 mps UL Chicago : 10.40 MPS DL, .67 mps UL The thing is, the Chicago is down. yesterday it ran at 18mps then again, my bandwidth may have nothing to do with this :P |
yeah. just did it again. its dieing. time for a new one. I'ma call my cable company tomorrow
