The Definitive Marvel Universe Wolverine

Okay so Wolverine, along with Spiderman, Iron Man, and Captain America, is one of the most commonly seen Marvel Universe figures. Not until recently have we actually seen a Wolverine "to-scale"(Team X with the atrocious face paint jobs in the latest...or the wave readily available now...I..have not seen the latest wave, and most likely won't for a while). Maybe the Wolverine in the Masterworks Sentinel set next year will be in-scale. Who knows.

Yet it's not like we are going to see Wolverine go away anytime soon. He sold well back when I was a child, and versions of him since then only increased. Hell Marvel even caught onto what Toy Biz was doing, and followed suit in the comics! What team isn't he part of?

So naturally, as collectors who want the best of the best, what would you want in a definitive Wolverine figure? Here are my suggestions:
  • in-scale with the other figures(...short like Team X/XMO Origins)
  • Claws that are separated like Marvel Universe
  • Thigh swivels like Marvel Universe
  • Clean paint job..face paint on Team X version is horrible
  • Vibrant paint bland
  • Wash is okay but not overdone
  • Ball jointed/swivel head like Extremis Iron Man
  • Released as a non-exclusive

I can agree on all but one point, the Ball jointed/swivel head like Extremis Iron Man doesnt work.

I have seen this now on a number of figures including the latest Iron Man 2 and a few other non-Iron Man and it is usually not done well. What I have found is one figure with the ball neck has worked from the MU"ish" figures and that is the Spiderman 3 exclusive from SDCC (that thing has like 34 points of articulation). Usually the swivel ball makes the head sit much too high.

I would like better face sculpt. The height and proportions have been good.

I just want one of his newer suit, and if they do that then they need to give us a new sculpt.

Tarquinius 10-20-2010 03:48 PM

I have to admit I like the XMO Claws...I feel like the MU ones get bent and warped out of shape.

And I really don't like the ball joints because I feel like it's hard to pose him

I feel like it would be ideal if they gave us alternate hands one with basic hands and clawed hands. They did this with some of the XMO figures and I appreciated it for it

So long as the wrist pegs are not weak. They were on my Logan with bone claws and axe for farm work...I think.

It would be cool to see swappable hands, including closed fists.

To me the pivotal figure was released. Sadly he's in a two pack with colossus and unmasked.

That same mold is being used in the x-force 3 pack though with a mask. So I'm hopeful that this figure will see a single carded release with mask. Otherwise, I'll just skip the figures like I have been so far.

are there more pictures of the x force 3 pack besides the fuzzy con one?

I think we will see it with a mask eventually. The X-Force one uses the 1st appearance head sculpt. I think it's inevitable that we'll see the current mask before next summer.

Not yet.

My biggest issue with all of the Wolverine versions out now have been his height. The XMO version was good for that but I have other issues with that particular mold.

I would certainly be happy with a new figure that incorporated everyone's suggestions, especially swappable hands. I'd even go so far as to say a swappable heads as well (a masked head and an unmasked head w/removable "collar" to mimic the pushed-back mask).

As for the costume, if they could give us the sculpt we want, I would be willing to buy every single costume variant of it that Hasbro could possibly throw at us. Well, as long as some stupid gimmick doesn't break the sculpt, anyway.

I don't know, maybe all this would be more plausible in a 6" scale like what's being done with the Walmart IM2 exclusives.

MeLikeJinx 10-24-2010 08:04 PM

I like the Target 2 pack MU version of Tiger Stripe Wolverine... that is good enough for me for that costume. And I really like the brown suit Wolverine that comes with the new Greatest Battles CP w/ Capt. America, except I don't like that particular headsculpt... if they had a better headsculpt with bigger wings like the Target 2 pack one then that brown suit Wolverine would probably be my favorite 3.75" Wolverine.

would love to see either double set of hands with claws in and out, or hands that retract by hitting a button, removable mask, cigar, leather jacket, have a logan variant, also bigger muscle scale, but I did like some of the wolverine origins stuff, not all but some, and first or series wolvey in black is a nice figure.

Retractable claws might be too hard to engineer at this scale.

And even if they could pull it off, there wouldn't be any wrist or elbow articulation due to the gimmick.

For a 3.75" figure, extra hands would be the way to go. OTOH, a 6" figure might still be able to pull off retractable claws without losing articulation, especially if they engineer the wrists the same way as TFA Voyager Prime's facemask gimmick.
