How much is cardboard worth to you?
Most figures are packaged in a combination of plastic and carboard, sometimes the packaging is basic info and some sort of reference picture. In some cases there's detailed artwork that to "moc collectors" enhances the value. Given any item kept mint with package mint that is no longer made is always worth more then a loose toy. But now a days toys have to many parts and options ie Hot Toys/ TF, that make you ask yourself "open or not to open". I know myself lately buying MU figures the artwork is great, but I live in a 1 bedroom apt and have no room to keep packaging... so given new and old toys how much is packaging add $$ wise when you consider buying a toy at a store, online, yardsale etc. Would you pay extra because the item is moc,or comes with backing? Personally if the packaging is damaged and price is reduced and the figure itself is good shape I'd go that route, but I'm I'm dropping 60-100+ say on a Galactus set then yeh I'd hangon to the packaging or not open it

I used to save the backs when I opened a new figure, but lately I snap a photograph and toss it. I still have a few GI Joe backs with file cards, but I'm even going to toss those the next time I get them out.
However, the last "old" figure I bought on card was a Dalak from Dapal's Dr. Who line. I really wish I had kept it in the package, not only because it was worth more and looked better on the card, but because I feel like I took something away from it. If I open a Marvel Universe variant or a convention exclusive, I know that even if it has a limited run, most of them have made it to collectors and there will be plenty in the future. Older toys I'm not so sure about. |
I keep all my card backs.
Mostly for artwork. I love that part. Why throw away something someone worked hard on. Thanks artists at HASBRO! |
Varies item to item, most often throw away, select cases keep.

I used to be all about saving the back of cards or boxes to toys, but I've lately realized its the toy that matters to me the most and the rest just takes up space. The only boxes I have now are from MISB items.
|
If I open a toy I toss the packaging, even in a house there is no room after 10 years of collecting multiple lines.
|
take a pic and toss it, unless is Masterpiece/TFCC, collector boxes, etc I tossed SDCC Destro's packaging, as SM said, just no room
|
It's a tough decision.
I have a ton of my cardbacks but I just rencently forced myself to throw away the first 25th 5-packs box. The only boxes I've kept were the one's with file cards on them. Beyond Joe...pretty much everything with nice artwork. TF are a no...they have nothing interesting on them. BUT boxes that house figures like...Naruto...are a keep. Definately worth more with the box then. |
I try and keep all my MU cards all in Galactus's box but thats getting full now so maybe i'll toss them its not like i have them all anyway as i bought a lot of figures loose
|
Now I buy everything MOSC.
When I was a kid, I always kept the cards for my loose toys. |
If I had a Galactus, I would definatley save, it, currently kept mystique and multiple man, I keep all the fury files, but I'm probably gonna throw them, out. I only have 4 figures still moc, 1 is my might muggs iron man, only mugg I have but the packaging is awesome, also my Earth x Hulk statue, the box is massive but comes with coa and not my fav piece so stays in original box, my ww2 ashley wood marine bramble sp? , Heath Ledger movie maniacs joker, and wolverine origins deadpool variant

I keep Joe cards, MU cards and TF backs everything else gets tossed
|
I personally enjoy the art on the card. Most of my figure's are kept in the original packaging. I must admit at times I find my self contemplating about taking the figure's out. Maybe I will in the future when I have no more room to store.

For newer Transformers, I will keep card backs and the back panels of opened box items. For exclusives, I try to keep all of the packaging as well but it depends on the item. Some are MOC/MIB, while some are MOSC/MISB. For older toys, I try to preserve whatever packaging I have for them.
As for any other lines I collect, I will rarely keep any packaging. Joes would probably be the only exception, though it is for the bio cards. Those I clip out and file away. I actually have about 5 boxes that only contain card backs, instruction manuals and packaging inserts. Thankfully, I'm still a long way from running out of space at our apartment by doing it this way. |
