Bubblegum Crisis: Knight Sabers is go!
Bubblegum crisis has been slated for a live action movie for awhile now.
Just last night/Today it's finally been formally announced! Over at LaMolinara to direct Canada-Asia co-production Bubblegum Crisis | News | Screen they've announced a director, and date, along with where all it's being Produced. 3D Live Action Bubblegum Crisis Movie Gets A Director And A Start Date Bleeding Cool Comic Book, Movies and TV News and Rumors has also covered it, albeit with less enthusiasm or even facts attached to it. (I say facts, because he injects his own distaste for how it felt lacking, onto japanese audiences, saying japan found it unpopular, which is untrue. It's one of the many cultural icons of Japan for the 80s and 90s. Starting as a direct to video series that sold so well, it gained a sequel direct to video series, and then even a direct to video spin-off series that focused on the AD Police. Years later, since it proved still popular, it gained a 26 episode tv series reboot, that proved popular enough to go for yet another AD Police spin-off as a tv series reboot. So how that means it's 'unpopular' in japan, is beyond me. Especially considering that just recently Yamato made figures of em, that have done decently in Japan, but not as well abroad due to price. As well as the studios in Japan being asked incessantly by japanese fans when another series will be made, which is why the 'a new BGC series is coming' rumor keeps popping back up.) Either way, count me excited. I just wonder who'll pick up the toy rights. I really hope either Hasbro or Spin Master get it. They've done the best work that I've seen so far in any scale for this kind of detail needed. I just hope whoever does pick it up, does the movie suits, as well as ALL the classic suits too. The original Bubblegum Crisis featured Designs by Kenichi Sonada, creator of Gunsmith Cats and Bean Bandit. |
I know I'd be interested in seeing a live-action version of BGC. The anime always struck me as goofy (but it a good way), so I look forward to see how it's handled in this format. It would be nice if they could get at least one name attached, if only to help with publicity.
As for that so-called "news story", it was more like reading a bitchy fan-site thead post from some basement-dwelling Internet troll. It's one thing not to like the source material, but seriously? Could you at least make an attempt to act professional? The whole point of the news post was to tell us the facts about an upcoming movie. I think it's fine if reporters want to state their own personal opinions about things, but only if they clearly state that it is their personal opinion. But with that guy, he serves up his derision as if it's inarguable fact. Maybe next time, he should do a little more research so he doesn't come off looking like a fool. |
I really want to see the designs or know what the music will be like, or heck just if Priss and the replicants will still be a band for this. Hopefully the script is good though, it has been in the works since 2008. That's one of the reasons I'm so grateful for finally a formal announcement. It's been sitting as projected for a 2012 release, with no production ever moving forward.
